Background / History

Jinse, the true Yellow Springs Saintess of earlier generations, raised Chan'er in Yellow Springs Dao as a specially cultivated reincarnated body. Chan'er grew up with access to both the Yellow Springs Saintess inheritance and Silver Moon Palace secret arts, making her Jinse's most valued prospective vessel. Jinse secretly crippled parts of Chan'er's body-tempering cultivation and altered her Saintess inheritance so that the Yellow Springs Mother Tree remained an incomplete phantom, ensuring Chan'er could not surpass her creator. 257 264

Although Yellow Springs Dao publicly treated Chan'er as its Holy Maiden, Xiang Yuan initially confirmed that she was not the reincarnating Yellow Springs Holy Maiden—Jinse was. Later evidence indicated that Chan'er was instead the Saintess naturally suited to the Yellow Springs inheritance, while Jinse had ultimately served as her stepping stone. 235 257 263

Chan'er encountered Xiang Yuan while he was concealing his identity as Spiritual Light Old Devil. After learning his true name and intention to cultivate anew, she maneuvered him into swearing an oath to protect her. Their early relationship was defined by mutual suspicion, manipulation, and attempts to exploit each other’s secrets. 80 128 129

Appearance

Chan'er initially appears as a slight, apparently sixteen-year-old girl with bright eyes and an innocent bearing. Her usual white robes, black hair, and moonlight-based techniques give her the appearance of an immortal maiden beneath the moon. 128

  • White robes and long black hair that move as though blending into moonlight. 128 140
  • Bright eyes and a graceful, youthful figure; she initially appeared the same age as Xiang Yuan. 128
  • Her steps can leave ripples of moonlight across the ground. 128
  • Later grew taller and developed into a more mature, seductive presence. 213 260 423
  • Often wears Silver Moon Gauze over her face in later appearances. 423

Personality

Chan'er habitually presents herself as innocent, sweet, and dependent, especially when doing so gives her an advantage. Beneath that façade, she is observant, calculating, and highly adept at using charm, weakness, or apparent obedience to obtain information and control a situation. 80 129 148

She is intensely possessive of Xiang Yuan and deeply jealous of Xiao Lingyue and other women close to him. Her rivalry with Xiao Lingyue frequently becomes verbal or physical, though the two can cooperate effectively when necessary. 167 214 425 493

Her upbringing under Jinse left her suspicious and ruthless. She is willing to interrogate enemies brutally, manipulate souls, and use the six bodies of Jinse’s reincarnations as servants. However, she gradually develops profound trust in Xiang Yuan, openly sharing techniques and relying on him during crises. 213 269 376

Abilities & Skills

Silver Moon Palace Arts

Chan'er's original principal cultivation path draws upon moonlight and her comprehension of heaven-and-earth laws.

  • Draws down moonlight to empower herself, especially beneath a full moon. 133 140
  • Forms swords of moonlight and uses moonlight-based movement that resembles spatial shifting. 133
  • Can manifest sixteen silver-white chains for attack, movement, restraint, and formation work. 134 140
  • Uses moonlight to purify demonic energy and shield allies. 226
  • Initially struggled to wield unfamiliar realm laws and required guidance to fully adapt to them. 129 132

Yellow Springs Mother Tree

Chan'er can summon the phantom of the Yellow Springs Mother Tree, an inheritance originally left incomplete by Jinse.

  • Uses the Mother Tree to isolate enemies, sever connections between linked opponents, and absorb Primordial Spirits. 143 144
  • Can nourish the phantom with resentment extracted from Primordial Spirits, a use Jinse herself did not possess. 260
  • Her later Mother Tree manifestation links life and death, disrupts space and time, and can shake nearby Primordial Spirits with reincarnation principles. 489
  • The inheritance was initially limited because Jinse had left the Mother Tree “without roots.” 257 263

Reincarnation Rebirth Scripture

As the Yellow Springs Saintess, Chan'er cultivates the Reincarnation Rebirth Scripture with exceptional compatibility.

  • Refines and controls the principles of reincarnation through the Ancient Mirror of Reincarnation. 304 489
  • Can borrow power from a future self two or three years ahead for a short time during a crisis. 260
  • Used Jinse’s memories and the Mother Tree’s aura to create a new Primordial Spirit for Jinse after advancing to Nether Communion. 377
  • Her mastery of the scripture allows her to cultivate without the bottlenecks that constrained Jinse. 304

Ancient Mirror of Reincarnation

The Ancient Mirror of Reincarnation is Chan'er's life-bound artifact and her most feared weapon.

  • Controls Jinse’s six reincarnated bodies, which lack Primordial Spirits and function as Chan'er's puppets. 260
  • Can strip or destroy Primordial Spirits and feed them to the Yellow Springs Mother Tree. 376
  • In the Netherworld Realm, gained the ability to cast targets directly into the eighteen levels of hell. 493
  • Its reincarnation principles are bound to Chan'er's life and spirit through joint cultivation. 489

Sun and Moon Together in the Sky

Chan'er's aura can synchronize with Xiao Lingyue’s through a dual-cultivation-derived combination art.

  • Combines Xiao Lingyue’s solar power with Chan'er's moonlight without mutual interference. 226 307
  • Enables coordinated movement, shared defenses, and powerful combined attacks. 226 493
  • Xiao Lingyue can use the linked aura to bear part of the damage inflicted on Chan'er's Primordial Spirit. 509

Auxiliary Techniques

  • Charm spell — attempted to use it to make Xiang Yuan into an obedient subordinate, though he avoided being affected. 150
  • Corpse-refining arts — possesses methods capable of maintaining and improving corpse puppets; she upgraded Senior Jiang by refining moonlight spiritual energy into him. 149 213
  • Formation breaking — used the Silver Moon Wheel and Sun and Moon Together in the Sky to break a formation laid by Yellow Springs Dao’s six great envoys. 307

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Ancient Mirror of Reincarnation — life-bound reincarnation artifact inherited from Jinse. 260 306
  • Silver Moon Wheel — magical treasure used to break formations. 307
  • Silver-white chains — moonlight-linked chains used for offense, restraint, movement, and anchoring herself. 134 153
  • Moonlight sword — a blade formed from gathered moonlight rather than a conventional fixed weapon. 133 306
  • Immortal robe of protective light — spoils taken from Jinse after her defeat. 261
  • Spatial equipment — secretly possessed storage equipment before revealing it to Xiang Yuan. 148
  • Jinse’s six reincarnated bodies — six controlled incarnations commanded through the Ancient Mirror of Reincarnation. 260 387

Relationships

  • Xiang Yuan — Her husband and earliest major ally. Their relationship began with mutual deception and an oath of protection, then developed into deep trust, possessiveness, and romantic attachment. 80 213 257
  • Jinse — Her former master and tormentor. Jinse raised Chan'er as a future vessel, crippled portions of her cultivation, and later tried to seize her body and Jambu Gate; Chan'er ultimately gained Jinse’s mirror and six incarnations after Jinse’s death. 257 260 264
  • Xiao Lingyue — Silver Moon Palace senior sister, romantic rival, and occasional ally. They argue and fight over Xiang Yuan, but their linked auras allow them to use Sun and Moon Together in the Sky. 167 226 425 493
  • Baoqin — Chan'er's attendant and coachwoman, who fears Chan'er's displeasure and serves her in the Southern Border. 150 151
  • Senior JiangXiang Yuan’s corpse puppet. Chan'er understands corpse-refining methods and successfully upgraded him with moonlight spiritual energy. 149 213
  • Yellow Springs Dao’s Six Great Envoys — Sect envoys who opposed Chan'er and Xiang Yuan; Chan'er broke their formation and subdued them. 307

Story Role / Major Arcs

Jambu Gate and the Unborn Realm

Chan'er moved to Mute Village to remain near Xiang Yuan, then entered Jambu Gate with him into the Unborn Realm. There, she initially lacked control over the local laws but quickly adapted, sought intelligence on Jambu Gate, and pursued the opportunity represented by the imperial-city demon pill. 128 129 138

During the imperial-city conflict, Chan'er integrated the Unborn Realm’s laws of heaven and earth and became powerful enough to confront Zhang Xinyuan and You Shanxian simultaneously. She identified their connection to Zhao Haoran, isolated their incarnations, and killed Zhang Xinyuan. 140 143 144

Southern Border and Jinse

After returning to the Dry Abyss Realm, Chan'er shared resources and cultivation knowledge with Xiang Yuan while continuing to refine Senior Jiang and strengthen herself. 149 151 213

Jinse eventually captured Chan'er, exposed the truth of her upbringing, and attempted to claim both Chan'er and Jambu Gate. Chan'er resisted despite being outmatched, and Xiang Yuan arrived through Jambu Gate to fight beside her. Jinse’s defeat freed Chan'er from her former master’s direct control and gave her access to the Ancient Mirror of Reincarnation and Jinse’s six bodies. 257 258 260

Yellow Springs Saintess

Chan'er established herself in Yellow Springs Dao as its effective Saintess and refined the Reincarnation Rebirth Scripture in Saintess Hall. Her reputation remained obscure outside the sect because those who faced her Ancient Mirror typically did not survive to describe it. 304 376

After reaching Nether Communion, she further unlocked Jinse’s memories and six lifetimes of cultivation insight, greatly deepening her command over the Mirror and the Mother Tree. 377

Later Campaigns

Chan'er used the Ancient Mirror and the Three Yin Book of Life and Death alongside Xiang Yuan to save Northern Qi’s Emperor Liu Che from a deadly curse. She then eagerly accompanied Xiang Yuan to aid Xiao Lingyue’s family, bringing Jinse’s six incarnations in a deliberately extravagant display of power. 387 388

In the Netherworld Realm, Chan'er fought alongside Xiao Lingyue and Shang Qingmeng against Body Integration Realm cultivators. She used the Ancient Mirror to send numerous enemies into the newly established eighteen levels of hell. 493 496

Notable Quotes

“Chan'er is a demoness. This is how demonesses conduct themselves—not like certain renowned righteous sects...” 389

“Chan'er doesn't understand either. I only feel that the Yellow Springs saintess's secret art suits me remarkably well...” 260

Trivia

  • Chan'er briefly adopted Xiang Yuan’s assumed surname and called herself “Flying Bat” Li Chan, though she strongly disliked the nickname. 132
  • Her apparent age was initially sixteen, but rumors of countless lives came from the mistaken belief that she was the reincarnating Yellow Springs Holy Maiden. 128 235
  • She can temporarily mature herself by borrowing from a future self, usually by two or three years. 260
  • Despite her rivalry with Xiao Lingyue, Chan'er’s strongest cooperative technique depends on their linked sun-and-moon auras. 226 307
