Background

Bai Wuyan is the cold and imperious Palace Mistress of Unrivaled Palace. Her first conflict with Xiang Yuan begins when she uses the Formless Sword Master as a vessel for a remote sword strike intended to control Xiang Yuan’s Primordial Spirit. Xiang Yuan breaks the technique, recognizing her as an Upper Three Realms expert and a dangerous master of illusion and sword intent 363 364.

She later enters the Ancient Wilderness Realm with Xiang Yuan through Jambu Gate to seek a Reincarnation Relic and undergo tribulation at Thunder Marsh. Though prepared with protective treasures and medicinal resources, she underestimates the interference of the Wheel Prison Great Demon. She survives the first eight lightning bolts, using the No Calamity Sword to cut apart the eighth, then barely endures the ninth Dao-Devouring Tribulation by severing her own comprehension of heaven-and-earth laws 366 367.

The tribulation leaves Bai Wuyan’s body and Primordial Spirit almost completely ruined. Xiang Yuan restores her through blood medicine and dual cultivation, allowing her to rebuild her body, recover her Primordial Spirit, and consolidate her realm. Once they leave the Profound Yellow Blood Sea, she detains him and takes him to Unrivaled Palace 368 369 371.

In the Lower Abyss Realm, Bai Wuyan’s reaction to the legends of King Mu of Zhou and the Queen Mother of the West exposes her personal investment in that identity. She is subsequently identified as the Queen Mother of the West, a revelation that intensifies her conflict with Sword Venerable Su Ran 437 441. Later, the true Queen Mother of the West reveals that Bai Wuyan was made to bear that fate as both a decoy and a contingency plan; Bai Wuyan had genuinely believed herself to be the original Queen Mother 518. After learning the truth, she rejects the title outright 524.

Although Bai Wuyan initially refuses involvement with the future Heavenly Court because she seeks immortality rather than divinity, she ultimately agrees to support its establishment on terms that preserve her independence. Unrivaled Palace is later assigned the divine position of the Queen Mother of the West 471 472 499.

Appearance

Bai Wuyan usually wears immaculate white palace robes and carries herself with the distant authority of a ruler. Her demeanor is reinforced by a beauty so striking that Xiang Yuan finds it difficult to ignore once her veil is removed 366 367.

  • Snow-white palace robes and a light veil.
  • Lustrously fair complexion and long dark hair.
  • A distinctive beauty mark near the corner of her eye 367 472.
  • Cold, frost-like eyes and an expression that rarely softens.
  • Can transform into, or manifest the image of, a massive White Phoenix while wielding her full sword intent 367.

Personality

Bai Wuyan is proud, aloof, and intensely conscious of her dignity. She dislikes being controlled, arranged, or forced to rely on others; even while gravely weakened in the Ancient Wilderness Realm, she initially refuses to ask Xiang Yuan for medicine until the threat of aging becomes unbearable 368.

She is blunt rather than evasive. While her divination is imperfect and often dangerous to perform, she usually answers Xiang Yuan’s questions directly instead of speaking in riddles, even when the effort leaves her injured 385 429 434.

Her composure becomes unreliable around Sword Venerable Su Ran and matters connected to the Queen Mother of the West. Their rivalry brings out Bai Wuyan’s jealousy, possessiveness, and temper, though she is capable of cooperating with Su Ran when the safety of their realm demands it 441 443 477.

Abilities & Skills

Swordsmanship and Sword Intent

Bai Wuyan’s sword arts are her primary means of offense. Her remote sword strike can cross space, freeze its surroundings, and attack a target’s Primordial Spirit directly.

  • Uses formless white Sword Qi that can distort space and erase the target’s sense of direction 363.
  • Can project sword intent through another person, as she does through the Formless Sword Master 363 364.
  • Her sword intent can cripple formations, split mountain peaks, and drive back a remotely projected Heavenly Emperor technique 411.
  • Her Phoenix-form sword strike repeatedly destroys the Wheel Prison Great Demon’s descended avatars 413 501.

White Phoenix Manifestation

At the height of her power, Bai Wuyan merges herself with sword intent and manifests as a White Phoenix.

  • Uses the form to meet overwhelming lightning tribulation head-on 367.
  • The manifestation is tied to her command of white light, phoenix imagery, and heaven-and-earth laws.
  • Her phoenix phantom also appears when she forcibly attempts high-level divination 385 469.

Divination

Bai Wuyan can investigate fate, hidden schemes, and the secrets of heaven through divination.

  • Can casually determine the prospects of ordinary mortals, such as the three princes of Southern Jin 427.
  • Uses overwhelming cultivation to forcefully examine heavenly secrets rather than relying on refined divination technique 385.
  • Upper Three Realms opponents can obscure themselves from her calculations 385.
  • Attempts to investigate powerful masterminds can result in severe backlash, including coughing blood and collapse 385 429 434.

Dual Cultivation and Restoration

Bai Wuyan uses dual cultivation with Xiang Yuan to restore herself, strengthen her body and Primordial Spirit, and exchange laws of heaven and earth.

  • Rebuilds her destroyed physical body using Xiang Yuan’s blood medicine after the Ancient Wilderness tribulation 368 371.
  • Gains rapid growth in her understanding of heaven-and-earth laws after passing tribulation 377.
  • Can transmit or gradually feed laws of heaven and earth to Xiang Yuan through cultivation 427.
  • Her recovery and progress are strongly supported by Xiang Yuan’s exceptional medicinal vitality 371 377.

Jambu Gate Authority

Bai Wuyan possesses exceptional authority over the jade-wall Jambu Gate.

  • Senses when Xiang Yuan opens a new world through Jambu Gate 436.
  • Her authority over the gate exceeds Xiang Yuan’s, despite not having fully recovered the power associated with the Queen Mother of the West 500.
  • Uses Jambu Gate expeditions to pursue Reincarnation Relics, realm inheritances, and opportunities for cultivation 366 437 477.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • No Calamity Sword — Bai Wuyan’s strongest magic treasure; forged through Unrivaled Palace’s inheritance by condensing heaven-and-earth laws. It can also take the form of a phoenix hairpin 367.

  • Cloud-Woven Heavenly Robe — A protective treasure garment that prevents the Ancient Wilderness Realm from draining her blood and vitality 366.

  • Jade Wall Space — Her storage space for medicinal pills, treasures, and supplies 368.

Relationships

  • Xiang Yuan — Initially attempts to control him through a Primordial Spirit-targeting sword strike. After he saves her from the Ancient Wilderness tribulation, they become closely bound through repeated dual cultivation, shared expeditions, and mutual exchanges of cultivation resources 363 364 368 371.
  • Xiao Lingyue — Her disciple. Xiao Lingyue is protective of Bai Wuyan and is alarmed when she finds Xiang Yuan detained at Unrivaled Palace after their Ancient Wilderness expedition 371.
  • Cheng Yuling — Bai Wuyan’s foremost disciple and Xiao Lingyue’s mother 471.
