Background

Xiang Yuan arrived in the world of Western Chu, Guanshan Pass, and Dezhou as a result of a one-way transmigration 1. During his first five days, he suffered from debilitating headaches as he passively integrated fragmented memories belonging to his new body, a fifteen or sixteen-year-old orphan who had been raised by the imperial court to read, write, and practice martial arts 1. Although Xiao He and his associates initially tested and deceived him, Xiang Yuan eventually joined their Imperial City Department operation under the codename “Bamboo Leaf Green” 34 45. To preserve his independence and temper his Martial Path through real experience, he accepted the position of Baoyi Officer in Song Family Village, close to the Southern Border 46.

His travels subsequently carried him across the Southern Border, the Dry Abyss Realm, the Heavenly God Realm, and numerous connected worlds. Xiang Yuan eventually concludes that he must maintain distance from Xiao He to avoid being delayed in his own martial path and to prevent the exposure of their respective secrets 46.

Xiao He later reveals that he is King Zhao Xiao Yan's fortieth son and an operative of the Imperial City Department's Twelve Earthly Branches, holding the Snake designation “Wind Crossing Mountains” 41 45. Despite their early conflict, the two become sworn brothers and repeatedly cooperate through the Southern Border and the wider martial world 34 72. Their bond remains affectionate but volatile, with Xiang Yuan often exasperated by Xiao He's schemes and Xiao He fiercely protective of Xiang Yuan's interests 219 414.

Xu Jixian

Xu Jixian is an associate of Xiao He who Xiang Yuan categorizes as a joker who lacks seriousness but possesses no ill intentions 22. Xiang Yuan respects Xu Jixian’s work ethic, noting that he performs difficult tasks without complaint and possesses the potential to achieve great things 47. Like Xiao He, Xu Jixian maintains a facade of being "crazy" or uneducated, leading Xiang Yuan to question his true identity and his potential connections to the Six Doors 41 43 46.

Xu Jixian is in fact Xiao He's subordinate in the Imperial City Department, codenamed “Black Rat Snake,” and is skilled in creating lifelike human-skin masks for disguise 45. He remains one of Xiang Yuan's trusted associates despite their constant teasing and Xu Jixian's deliberately absurd wastrel persona 45 59.

Wang Wenxu

Wang Wenxu is Xiang Yuan's teacher at Yulin Academy and an early mentor who encourages him to read, learn, and develop his literary talents 4 33. He is also an Imperial City Department operative under Xiao He, codenamed “Red Hundred Joints,” and possesses substantial expertise in formations, intelligence gathering, and martial cultivation 45 54.

Although Wang Wenxu worries that Xiao He's plans and Xiang Yuan's fixation on martial arts will distract Xiang Yuan from scholarship, he continues to support him and provide guidance 33 48. Xiang Yuan later reunites warmly with Wang Wenxu after becoming a Nether Passage Realm Grandmaster, showing lasting appreciation for his former teacher's instruction 358.

Yue Huanjiang

Yue Huanjiang is Xiang Yuan's sworn brother and a disciple of White Cloud Manor. Xiang Yuan initially admires Yue Huanjiang's elegant bearing and noble temperament, contrasting him favorably with Xiao He's deliberately clownish conduct 38 41. Yue Huanjiang recognized Xiang Yuan's unusual insight and sought to become sworn brothers with him after their discussion at White Cloud Manor 38.

Yue Huanjiang gave Xiang Yuan Tiger Roar Saber, its corresponding technique, sleeve arrows, and foundational Acupoint Opening manuals, while later providing the Five Elements Bead method that enabled Xiang Yuan to cultivate all five elements simultaneously 43 47. Xiao Lingyue

Xiao Lingyue is Xiao He's sister, Xiao Yan's daughter, Bai Wuyan's closed-door disciple, and Xiang Yuan's wife or betrothed partner 107 183 359. Their relationship developed from a martial connection into a formal family alliance after Xiao Yan adopted Xiang Yuan as his ninety-first son and approved his relationship with Xiao Lingyue 183 184.

Xiao Lingyue frequently supports Xiang Yuan in political and martial conflicts, while also challenging his evasiveness and many entanglements. She later attained the Body Integration Realm through extensive cultivation resources and became one of his principal companions in the Dry Abyss Realm 414 493.

Chan'er

Chan'er is one of Xiang Yuan's close companions and consort princesses. Their connection began during Xiang Yuan's activities in the Southern Border, where he revealed his true name to her after using the Lingguang identity 80. Their relationship is defined by playful provocation, mutual protection, jealousy, and repeated cooperation against enemies 139 219.

Chan'er often clashes with Xiao Lingyue over status and Xiang Yuan's attention, though the two can cooperate when external threats arise 424 493. She later entered the Return to Void Realm alongside Shang Qingmeng 498.

Bai Wuyan

Bai Wuyan is the Palace Master of Unrivaled Palace, Xiao Lingyue's master, and a powerful figure closely tied to Xiang Yuan's rise 359 385. She has alternated between punishing, guiding, aiding, and confronting Xiang Yuan, particularly regarding his cultivation and his relationship with Xiao Lingyue 385 469.

Xiang Yuan relies on Bai Wuyan's divination and power, while she seeks his assistance in pursuing her ambitions across worlds and strengthening the Dry Abyss Realm 469 500. Shang Qingmeng

Shang Qingmeng is Sword Heart Studio's second-in-command and initially diagnosed Xiang Yuan's abnormal constitution as untreatable 272. Xiang Yuan later saved her from a trapped magical treasure in the sword-pillar forbidden ground, deepening their association 274.

Their relationship became intimate and increasingly contentious, with Shang Qingmeng becoming possessive and suspicious of Xiang Yuan's other relationships 420 493. Despite her rivalry with Xiao Lingyue and Chan'er, she relies on her own exceptional talent rather than external cultivation resources and eventually entered the Return to Void Realm with Chan'er 493 498.

Ji Boli

Ji Boli is Xiang Yuan's cousin and a mentor-like senior who helped him upon his advancement to the Innate Realm. He gifted Xiang Yuan the Cloud-Turning Rain-Overturning Palm and reforged the Storm Mist Saber 190. Xiang Yuan later sought his assistance in dealing with Shang Qingmeng and the Heavenly Sword Pavilion's internal strife 279.

Their relationship is one of familial affection, mutual exploitation, and shared involvement in the complex factional struggles of the Dry Abyss Realm 279 412.

Old Liu

Old Liu is the Fengxian County constable who first guided Xiang Yuan through his duties in the Swift Squad, introduced him to the county's political structure, and treated him to a meal at Xianglai Tower 4.
