Background

Xiao Yan is the son of Xiao Clan patriarch Xiao Zhan. His long-standing physique problem prevented his proper cultivation until Hun Tianchen resolved it with a single palm strike, in exchange for the Xiao Clan's Tuo She Ancient Emperor Jade. Xiao Yan vowed to repay the help he received and became determined to grow strong enough to face his Three-Year Agreement with Nalan Yanran. 4

An inner voice later tells him that Hun Tianchen had deliberately accelerated his Dou Qi absorption, causing the voice's premature awakening. This revelation makes Xiao Yan wary of Hun Tianchen and his schemes. 5

After the Misty Cloud Sect nearly annihilates the Xiao Clan, Xiao Yan escapes with surviving members and disperses them across the Jia Ma Empire. He enters Jia Nan Academy, seeks Heavenly Flames and the Fallen Heart Flame, and dedicates himself to overthrowing the Misty Cloud Sect and avenging his clan. 19 23

Xiao Yan is persistent and courageous, repeatedly confronting enemies who vastly outclass him.
