Background / History
Madara was one of Konoha’s founders and Hashirama Senju’s lifelong rival. After their battle at the Valley of the End, he used Izanagi with a delayed activation to fake his death, allowing Hashirama to believe he had killed him. Madara secretly took and transplanted Hashirama’s flesh, acquiring Hashirama’s power and beginning a prolonged attempt to awaken the Rinnegan. 295 296
For roughly a decade, Madara pursued the Rinnegan in an underground cave while sustaining himself with chakra, life force, and dōjutsu. The process made little progress, and he began to doubt whether he could complete the Moon Eye Plan before aging further. 120
He initially viewed Uchiha Nan’s rise as proof that the Uchiha had finally overcome Tobirama Senju’s restrictions. Believing Nan had seized the Third Hokage position through a coup, Madara considered recruiting him as a successor or helper for the Moon Eye Plan. 92
Appearance
Madara conceals himself in Konoha as an elderly man, though his distinctive Uchiha features still draw attention.
- Often disguises himself as an old man while living in Konoha. 113 114
- Has a recognizable Uchiha hairstyle and speaks with unusually intimate knowledge of the clan. 167
- Carries Hashirama’s transplanted flesh on his chest. 92
- Later publicly returns in a black robe patterned with red clouds. 307
Personality
Madara is proud, competitive, and deeply concerned with status. He refuses to return openly to Konoha in a humiliating position, imagining instead that he should reappear during a crisis and rescue the village in an invincible form. 133
His beliefs are not static. Exposure to Konoha’s prosperity and Uchiha Nan’s writings makes him question the Moon Eye Plan, especially before he has obtained the Rinnegan or committed beyond retreat. He comes to favor a difficult but real future over an illusory utopia. 120 128
Despite his severity, Madara shows an unexpectedly domestic and sociable side while incognito. He works in a factory, lives in a shared dormitory, enjoys Konoha’s food and leisure, discusses politics over tea, and becomes protective of Itou Sousuke. 128 133 138 167
Abilities & Skills
Dōjutsu
Madara possesses the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan and later the Rinnegan.
- His Sharingan can cast illusions and expose corrupt officials’ crimes. 307
- He used Izanagi to survive the Valley of the End and stage his death. 295
- He pursues the Rinnegan as the key to the Moon Eye Plan and later retrieves it from Nagato. 144 328
- The Rinnegan allows access to the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and the path toward becoming the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki. 296
Susanoo
Madara’s Susanoo is regarded as an overwhelming, historic standard of Uchiha power.
- His Susanoo was remembered by Konoha’s older clan heads as a towering giant whose attacks were earth-shattering. 20
- His later public display of a hundreds-of-meters-tall Susanoo deters the great ninja villages from confronting him. 308
- He clashes with Uchiha Nan’s Susanoo in a battle lasting over a month. 330
Wood Release
By transplanting Hashirama’s flesh, Madara gains Hashirama’s power and Wood Release.
- The transplant forms part of his attempt to combine Uchiha and Senju power to awaken the Rinnegan. 296
- He claims he can use Wood Release with ease. 304
Shadow Clone Technique
Madara uses Shadow Clones outside combat to increase factory productivity.
- Uses clones to compete in workplace output and demonstrate his superiority. 142
- His stamina and speed make factory work effortless even without relying on deception. 129 130
Political and Social Theory
Madara develops an alternative program for remaking the Shinobi World.
- Writes a book proposing land reclamation, new ninja academies, and a group army. 300
- Discusses labor, capital, productivity, and the transition into a new era with Hashirama. 303
- Implements change from the top down after taking the Land of Rivers rather than attempting immediate mass mobilization. 307
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Gunbai — associated with Madara’s legacy and later carried by Obito during the plan to revive him. 327

- Black Zetsu — long-term manipulator behind the Moon Eye Plan. Black Zetsu grows frustrated when Madara abandons his single-minded pursuit of the plan and eventually seeks replacements. 113 138 192
- Itou Sousuke — child friend and informal protégé. Madara tells him stories, gives him a full card collection, and attempts to temper his unrealistic shinobi ambitions. 114 125 138
- Izuna Uchiha — younger brother whose death remains a source of hatred toward Tobirama. Izuna later works with Uchiha Nan partly to prevent Madara from further manipulation by Black Zetsu. 143 328
- Tobirama Senju — longstanding enemy whom Madara blames for Izuna’s death and whose fear of Madara remains intense. 116 143
- Obito Uchiha — successor manipulated into the Moon Eye Plan. Obito reluctantly revives Madara because he cannot defeat Uchiha Nan alone. 327
- Nagato — bearer of Madara’s Rinnegan; Madara later reclaims the eyes after his resurrection. 327 328
Story Role / Major Arcs
Return to Konoha
Madara secretly returns to Konoha and finds a statue honoring him as “Konoha’s Uncrowned Shadow.” The village’s prosperity, technology-focused education, and peaceful atmosphere challenge his expectations. 113 114
After reading Uchiha Nan’s political writings, Madara rents a house and remains in the village to observe its development. Though originally interested in turning Nan into a Moon Eye Plan successor, he gradually becomes uncertain that the plan is still his best path. 120 124
Factory Worker and Konoha Resident
To secure food and experience Konoha’s society directly, Madara works in a factory. He quickly becomes the most productive worker, joins a team, lives in an eight-person dormitory, and finds the routine unexpectedly fulfilling. 128 129 130 133
He befriends Itou Sousuke through card collecting and roasted sweet potatoes, then uses his earnings and a bounty from his clone to buy the boy a complete card collection. 125 133 138
Ideological Rivalry with Uchiha Nan
Madara meets Nan atop the Hokage Monument. Their discussion turns to Madara’s regret at never becoming Hokage, the ceiling of shinobi power, the Rinnegan, and the future of the world. Nan calls him a “frog in a well,” prompting Madara to reconsider his own limits and focus more intently on unlocking the Rinnegan. 142 144
Madara later writes his own program for reshaping the Shinobi World, moving beyond the Moon Eye Plan toward reforms concerning land, education, labor, capital, and collective armed forces. 300 303
Encounter with Hashirama
Madara meets a disguised, reanimated Hashirama—calling himself “Wood Madara”—without initially recognizing him. Their strange familiarity leads them to tour Konoha and debate the village system, unification, and the possibility of another war. 294
When their identities nearly become clear, Uchiha Nan intervenes. Madara is disappointed when “Wood Madara” disappears, while Hashirama learns that Madara survived through Izanagi. 295 297
Land of Rivers and Akatsuki
Madara openly returns to the Shinobi World in a black robe with red clouds, establishes Akatsuki, defeats the Land of Rivers’ army, and takes control of the country. He publicly exposes and executes the most corrupt officials while building a new government from the top down. 307
His overwhelming Susanoo discourages the great villages from acting directly against him, even as the Daimyo and nobles demand his elimination. 308
Resurrection and Moon Eye Plan
Obito and Black Zetsu revive Madara through Impure World Reincarnation after deciding he is necessary to counter Uchiha Nan. Madara is eager to fight Nan, reclaims his Rinnegan, and resumes the Moon Eye Plan after learning Obito has made little progress. 327 328
He attacks Sunagakure for the One-Tails and Kumogakure for the Two-Tails, killing the Fourth Kazekage and rejecting Nan’s attempts at persuasion. 329
Battle with Uchiha Nan
Madara fights Uchiha Nan in a catastrophic Susanoo battle lasting more than a month. The conflict devastates the battlefield and attracts the attention of the entire Shinobi World before Nan defeats him. 330
Afterward, Madara remains committed to his own path despite acknowledging the immense gap between himself and Nan. 341
Six Paths Contingency
On the Moon, the Sage of Six Paths shares the truth of the past with Madara and grants him power, hoping Madara can serve as a contingency against Uchiha Nan. 347
