Background / History
During the pursuit by Kinkaku and Ginkaku’s forces, Tobirama judged that one person had to remain behind to ensure the others could escape. When Hiruzen Sarutobi volunteered, Tobirama entrusted him with the title of Third Hokage, placing the village’s future above his own survival. Tobirama subsequently died protecting his disciples. 1 56
His choice of Hiruzen over Toma Senju was deliberate political restraint. Tobirama feared that allowing a third consecutive Senju Hokage would turn Konoha into a Senju dynasty, while he and Hashirama would no longer be present to contain the clan’s influence. 60
Uchiha Nan later resurrected Tobirama through Impure World Reincarnation. Weak, sealed, and unable to use his techniques freely, Tobirama became Nan’s prisoner in an underground laboratory. Nan used Tobirama’s own space-sealing formula and further control measures to prevent escape. 56 58 93 160
Initially convinced that Nan’s rise would endanger Konoha, Tobirama gradually became invested in Nan’s industrial and political plans. His research became central to Konoha’s electrification, weapons development, medical work, and experiments involving Hashirama Cells, clan bloodlines, and the Tenseigan. 65 84 115 184 280
Tobirama remains resentful of his captivity and Nan’s treatment, but repeatedly cooperates when Konoha, Tsunade, Toma, or the Senju clan are at risk. 63 148 149 254
Appearance
Tobirama is depicted as an older man whose authority persists even after death. While confined in the laboratory, he commonly wears research attire and protective equipment.
- White laboratory coat, mask, goggles, and gloves while conducting experiments. 127 140
- His resurrected body is heavily restricted by seals, barriers, and later Uchiha Hikari’s Yachihoko mark. 93 160
- Maintains a stern, frequently displeased expression, particularly around Uchiha Nan and Uchiha experiment subjects. 56 126
Personality
Tobirama is pragmatic, sharp-minded, and intensely devoted to Konoha. He will sacrifice personal, clan, and political interests for what he believes protects the village; his decision not to elevate Toma Senju reflects this principle. 1 60
He is proud of his intellect and research ability, responds strongly to recognition of his inventions, and dislikes having his competence questioned. His pride often fuels heated arguments with Uchiha Nan, though he can absorb new ideas quickly and refine them into practical plans. 62 65 184
His longstanding distrust of the Uchiha is a defining flaw. Tobirama designed techniques specifically to counter their abilities and struggles to confront the consequences of treating them as a threat rather than as comrades. Learning that the Senju and Uchiha share a common origin causes him to reconsider some of his views, though not without resistance. 60 62 117 118
Despite his hostility, he shows protectiveness toward his family and students. He submits to Nan’s demands to protect Tsunade, worries over Toma’s Hashirama Cells side effects, and invests heavily in Orochimaru’s education. 63 126 148 149
Abilities & Skills
Ninjutsu Inventor
Tobirama is regarded as an exceptional inventor of forbidden techniques. Even while serving as Hokage, he created many of his most consequential jutsu in his spare time. 62
- Developed techniques to counter perceived Uchiha advantages, including the Bringer-of-Darkness Technique, Shadow Clone Technique, Impure World Reincarnation, and Mutually Multiplying Exploding Tags. 62
- Created a fixed-location space-sealing formula specifically capable of restricting the Flying Thunder God Technique. 93
- Can rapidly design specialized sealing techniques, including a sealing method used alongside the Miko to contain Mōryō. 177 210
- His reliance on Forbidden Techniques becomes a source of regret when Nan uses Impure World Reincarnation and body-control methods against him. 63 210
Flying Thunder God Technique
Tobirama is the creator of the Flying Thunder God Technique, a space-time ninjutsu that would ordinarily allow him to return to Konoha alone during the Kinkaku Force pursuit. 1 62
- Enables exceptional mobility when Tobirama has sufficient chakra and control. 1
- In his weakened reincarnated state, he cannot properly sense spatial fluctuations or activate it. 58
- Nan confines him with Tobirama’s own anti-Flying Thunder God seal. 93
Shadow Clone Research Workforce
Tobirama uses the Multiple Shadow Clone Technique to multiply his research output.
- Produced more than sixty clones simultaneously for research. 84
- The clones are physically fragile because he sacrifices combat capability to maximize their number. 84
- Tobirama and Izuna later use their main bodies and hundreds of clones on the Tenseigan project. 280
Scientific Research and Engineering
Tobirama’s research talent is the primary reason Nan keeps him alive and confined rather than eliminating him. 62 229
- Produced designs for light bulbs, high-capacity batteries, generators, and power plants within roughly three weeks. 84
- Developed a Hashirama Cells solution capable of granting subjects Wood Release and potentially Sage Mode-related benefits. 115 141
- Formulated treatments for the harmful side effects suffered by Senju subjects who injected Hashirama Cells. 149
- Created healing potions, gunpowder, furniture designs, chakra-independent grenades, pressure-triggered explosives, and other weapons. 161 184
- Notes that firearms require machine tools and cannot be easily mass-produced with existing capabilities. 184
Bloodline and Tenseigan Research
Tobirama conducts extensive research into Hashirama Cells and the shared origins of the Senju, Uchiha, Hyuga, and Uzumaki clans. 115 280
- Registers physical and chakra-related data from Uchiha test subjects. 126
- Works with Izuna Uchiha to merge the pupil power of two pairs of Byakugan into a single pair. 280
- Produces “ultimate” Byakugan containing the pupil power of a thousand Byakugan, though the project still lacks the necessary Ōtsutsuki chakra for a true Tenseigan transformation. 280
- States that further progress requires bloodline material, chakra, Yin–Yang Release methods, reagents, and extensive experimentation. 280
Water Release and Combat Expertise
Tobirama considers his Water Release, Flying Thunder God, and forbidden techniques sufficient proof of his combat strength, even though he died while covering his disciples’ retreat from Kinkaku, Ginkaku, and their elite force. 127
- Was killed while facing more than a dozen high-level pursuers, including Kinkaku and Ginkaku using Nine-Tails chakra and Six Paths treasures. 127
- In captivity, his combat capacity is severely limited by his weakened reincarnated body and external control seals. 58 160
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Underground laboratory — Nan provides Tobirama with a secured, high-end laboratory inside the Uchiha compound. 82
- Research clones — His principal workforce for large-scale experiments and development. 84 280
- Hashirama Cells solution — A research product used to enhance subjects and treat related side effects. 115 141 149
- Chakra-independent grenades — Explode three seconds after a fuse is pulled. 184
- Pressure-triggered buried explosives — Detonate when subjected to sufficient pressure. 184
- Anti-Yin Release sealing project — A large-area barrier intended to capture Black Zetsu. 177 183
Relationships
- Hashirama Senju — Elder brother and First Hokage. Tobirama admires Hashirama’s strength but criticizes what he sees as his naïveté and excessive mercy. 117 226
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Disciple and chosen successor as Third Hokage. Tobirama appointed him during the Kinkaku Force pursuit, then later questions the consequences of that choice. 1 58
- Shimura Danzō — Former disciple whose ambition Tobirama suppresses during the succession crisis. 1
- Uchiha Nan — Captor, Hokage, collaborator, and constant rival. Nan exploits Tobirama’s expertise, while Tobirama increasingly assists his plans for Konoha despite resenting his control. 56 65 229
- Tsunade — Hashirama’s granddaughter. Nan uses her safety to force Tobirama’s cooperation; Tobirama yields to protect her. 63
- Toma Senju — Hashirama’s son. Tobirama worries over Toma’s self-experimentation with Hashirama Cells and seeks Nan’s help to treat him. 148 149
- Orochimaru — Student and research apprentice. Tobirama teaches him ninjutsu, combat, and scientific research, and assigns independent projects. 93 126 140
- Uchiha Izuna — Longstanding enemy whom Tobirama killed in life. Their resurrected versions continue to antagonize each other, though they later collaborate on research. 116 226 280
- Mito Uzumaki — Sister-in-law and sealing-jutsu expert. Tobirama trusts her loyalty to Konoha but is shaken by revelations surrounding Hiruzen’s death. 58 177
- Uchiha Hikari — Places a Yachihoko mark on Tobirama, adding another layer of bodily control over him. 160
- Black Zetsu — Tobirama researches a countermeasure against its Yin Release and stealth abilities; he later physically attacks it in the laboratory. 177 208
