Background / History

Issho was a wandering gambler before meeting Leon. He had recently lost his sight when he first arrived in Wano Country, where Fugetsu Kisaburo—the head of the Fugetsu family—personally forged his sword, Gokudo Fire Line, for him. 366

He deliberately blinded himself because the evils of the world had become too painful for him to witness. Losing his sight sharpened his hearing and other senses; combined with Observation Haki, this made him exceptionally effective at gambling and able to vaguely perceive the good or evil in others. 135 146

Issho first encountered Leon during the conflict with Crocodile. He returned Kogarashi, which Leon had forced on him to hold, then used his gravity to pin Crocodile beneath the desert sand. Leon's brutal strength left Issho wary, but he also recognized Leon's ambition and his fierce sense of justice. 133

After witnessing the World Government's actions and questioning whether Leon's attempt to overthrow it could improve the world, Issho chose to gamble on Leon's cause.
