Background / History

Kuzan was one of the Navy's three “monsters,” alongside Sakazuki and Borsalino, before their eventual promotions. At Mary Geoise, the three coordinated their Logia abilities and combat instincts against Leon's Godzilla form. 5

A disciple of Garp, Kuzan met Leon shortly afterward and escorted him around Marineford at Garp's request. He sought to recruit Leon into the Marines, showed him Garp's training equipment, and agreed to arrange silver-fiber bandages for him. 9

During the campaign against Douglas Bullet, Kuzan planted Time Freeze Capsules as part of a coordinated trap with Sakazuki. When Bullet's counterattack injured Sakazuki, Kuzan extracted him from the battlefield; later, he blocked Sakazuki from firing on the warship carrying Bullet and Leon because other Marines would be endangered. 21 22

At Ohara, Kuzan personally asked Leon to accompany him because the defecting Vice Admiral Sauro was their mutual friend. He tried to convince Sauro to surrender, but ultimately used his ice to stop him after Sauro attempted to flee with Robin. 47 49

Kuzan later fought Leon repeatedly after Leon became an enemy of the World Government. Though his ice could restrict Godzilla's movement, Kuzan acknowledged that cold alone could barely damage him. 60 63

Personality

Kuzan is habitually relaxed, sleepy, and informal. He naps on lounge chairs during deployments, offers Leon sherry before missions, and prefers cycling to flying despite his ability to create aerial ice constructs. 18 20 45

Beneath this indolence, he is deeply committed to the Marines and to Garp's teachings. He protects fellow Marines even when it compromises an immediate objective, and he is troubled by operations that treat civilians as expendable bait. 22 137
