Background / History
Marine Training
Sengoku raised Rosinante as his adopted son and kept him largely within Marineford for his safety. At 15, Rosinante met Leon through Zephyr and registered for Marine recruitment alongside him. His enthusiasm exceeded his preparation: Sengoku had postponed training him because he considered him too young 12 14 51.
During the final boot-camp match, Rosinante faced Smoker, the camp’s highest-ranked recruit. Despite repeated knockdowns and exhaustion, he kept standing until Smoker ended the match with a chokehold. Rosinante wanted Sengoku to see that he could become a worthy Marine; afterward, he and Leon were selected for Zephyr’s Elite Training Camp 16 17.
The elite camp left him discouraged by the strength of his fellow trainees. Leon renewed his motivation by appealing to his desire not to disappoint Sengoku. Recognizing that his combat growth still lagged behind the others, Rosinante trained as a medic and began treating wounded pirates captured during a training voyage 37 42.
Sabaody and Leon’s Imprisonment
On his first visit to Sabaody, Rosinante’s excitement repeatedly got him into trouble. Leon caught him after a sightseeing bubble burst and prevented him from overpaying for a Bubble Car. Rosinante privately wished that Leon were his real brother 51 52.
He was later captured while attempting to rescue a girl from traffickers. The criminals threatened their hostage, and Rosinante surrendered without considering retreat or calling for help. Leon located him, freed the captives, and took him for treatment because the local Marine base could not handle his injuries 54 55.
After Leon killed a Celestial Dragon, Rosinante tried to prevent his execution, promising to appeal to Sengoku, Garp, Zephyr, and Kuzan. Sengoku eventually told him that Leon would instead be secretly imprisoned in Impel Down. Rosinante concealed that information to protect Leon, retaining hope that imprisonment would leave a chance for his survival 58 67 69.
Undercover Mission and Law’s Rescue
Rosinante voluntarily infiltrated his brother Doflamingo’s organization several years before the Minion Island incident. As Corazon, he reported to Sengoku while working to prevent Doflamingo from taking Dressrosa. His undercover persona included eccentric behavior and harsh treatment of children 241 242.
His bond with the terminally ill Law eventually took priority over the mission. When Doflamingo announced plans to obtain the Ope Ope no Mi and have Rosinante eat it, Rosinante realized that his brother suspected him. He obtained transaction details from Sengoku and resolved to steal the fruit for Law, then disappear with him under new names 244.
At Minion Island, Rosinante infiltrated Diez Barrels’ hideout and escaped with what he believed was the Ope Ope no Mi. While trying to deliver intelligence concerning a kingdom’s survival, he encountered Vergo, Doflamingo’s spy within the Marines. Vergo beat both Rosinante and Law unconscious, prompting the secretly observing Leon to intervene 245 246 247 248.
Rosinante subsequently hid Law in a treasure chest under a silence barrier and deliberately revealed himself to the Donquixote Family. Leon rescued him and defeated Doflamingo. Leon also admitted that he had swapped the stolen fruit, then gave Law the genuine Ope Ope no Mi 249 250 253 255.
Life with the Godzilla Pirates
When Tsuru offered him a return to Marine service, Rosinante refused and asked her to tell Sengoku to consider him dead on Minion Island. He escaped with Leon, began serving aboard his ship as a doctor, and was introduced to the Godzilla Pirates 256 258 261 265.
His transition remained uneasy. He struggled to address enemies as a pirate rather than a Marine, and Garp later suggested that Sengoku could legitimize his return by describing his pirate service as another undercover assignment. Rosinante rejected that explanation 319 425.
On Hachinosu, Rosinante became a respected physician and continued meeting former Marine classmates. Before the approaching war, he admitted that Law had surpassed him and that he would have died without Leon’s help. Leon encouraged him not to treat failure as the end of his journey 448 546.
Appearance
- Blond hair: Introduced as a blond youth when he meets Leon 12.
- Tall build: Leon later introduces him to the crew as the “tall mummy,” referring to his heavily bandaged condition 265.
- Corazon attire: Wears exaggerated facial makeup, dark purple sunglasses, and a black feather coat during his undercover mission 241 244 245.
- Expressive gestures: Frequently makes a peace sign, including while injured and while reassuring Law 42 253 274.
Personality
Rosinante is compassionate enough to help people regardless of allegiance. As a trainee medic, he treats captured pirates; on Sabaody, he risks himself for a kidnapped girl; and on Minion Island, he jeopardizes both his mission and his safety to save Law. His kindness can undermine his judgment, particularly when he reacts to danger without considering alternatives 42 55 244 247.
He is persistently clumsy, admitting that he has been accident-prone since childhood. His mishaps range from tripping over a doorstep to falling down a snowy slope during an escape. Yet his physical awkwardness does not prevent exceptional determination: he repeatedly rises against Smoker after reaching his limits and later confronts Doflamingo despite severe injuries 12 17 246 252.
Years of espionage make him more perceptive and resolute, but Leon’s presence can bring back his earlier nervous dependence. He struggles with comparisons to stronger companions and wants Law to have a healthy, happy life rather than become consumed by revenge. This protective outlook sometimes conflicts with Leon’s harsher training methods 244 254 259 274 546.
Abilities & Skills
Quiet Fruit
Rosinante’s Devil Fruit suppresses sound through purple barriers, domains, and effects applied to his own movement 249 274 417.
- Silence: Creates a soundproof dome around Law’s hiding place 249.
- Silent Barrier: Prevents a Marine opponent from producing sound while Rosinante escapes 257.
- Silent Movement: Removes the sound of his high-speed movement when combined with Soru 274.
- Silent Domain: Envelops an area and counters Roar Gabu’s sonic attack 417.
- Everyday use: Values the fruit for preventing disturbances during sleep 255 368.
- Unconfirmed potential: Robin proposes that sound suppression might cancel vibrations and potentially counter Whitebeard’s Tremor-Tremor Fruit. No successful use against Whitebeard is established 368.
Six Powers and Endurance
Rosinante learned Marine combat techniques and developed Silent Movement as a foundation of his former Vice Captain career 274.
- Soru: Provides rapid movement, augmented by his sound suppression 274.
- Tekkai: Hardens his body like iron, but does not prevent Lucci’s Rokuogan from throwing him backward and causing him to cough blood 274.
- Resilience: Continues fighting after repeated knockdowns and receives Leon’s praise for his endurance 17 275.
- Early limitation: Still has not mastered Geppo during his first Sabaody visit 51.
- Further conditioning: Undergoes Leon’s rope-assisted swimming and towing training 262 280.
Medicine
Rosinante turns to medicine after realizing that his strength is not developing as quickly as his peers’ 42.
- Treats and bandages wounded prisoners and crewmates 42 261 318.
- Carries medical instruments and administers injections while caring for the feverish Law 42 246.
- Is trusted to treat Law after his duel with Mihawk 457.
- Takes Shanks to the hospital with the stated intention of making him a cloned replacement arm; completion is not shown in the provided passage 536.
Espionage and Infiltration
- Maintains the Corazon identity within the Donquixote Family and submits reports to Sengoku 241 242.
- Detects Doflamingo’s growing suspicion from the circumstances of the Ope Ope no Mi proposal 244.
- Uses Marine intelligence to assess the forces stationed around Minion Island before infiltrating the pirates’ hideout 245.
- Attempts to deliver a sealed intelligence device concerning a threatened kingdom 247.
Weaknesses
- Water vulnerability: Requires Swimming Coating to train in the sea. When he jumps in without applying it, Law must rescue him 262 280.
- Clumsiness and impulsiveness: Repeatedly causes falls, failed escapes, and avoidable danger 12 51 246.
- Combat disparity: Is decisively overpowered by Vergo and remains conscious of the gap between himself and stronger companions 248 546.
