Background / History
Konoha service and wartime command
Orochimaru is the Third Hokage’s former disciple and Anko’s teacher. The Hokage remembers him as a brilliant genius who has become increasingly unpredictable 7 151.
His first encounter with Haotian occurs while accompanying Anko through Konoha’s food street. He restrains Anko when she tries to attack Haotian, then expresses interest in the boy’s unusual Kekkei Genkai. The encounter prompts Haotian to accelerate his own research 27 28.
On the Western Front, Orochimaru receives mission reports from Minato and Zhiwei. He intervenes when Chiyo attempts to kill Haotian with her ten puppets, opposing her with venomous snakes; Haotian remains suspicious of his motives. Orochimaru later obtains Chiyo’s severed arm 40 43 44.
When Haotian returns to the Western Front as a Jonin, Orochimaru again asks to examine his bloodline ability. Haotian postpones the discussion until after the fighting. During Konoha’s counterattack, Orochimaru’s giant snakes scatter Iwa formations and help prevent the Sand forces from exploiting their opportunity 104 105 109.
Forbidden research
In his underground laboratory, Orochimaru dissects White Zetsu corpses and considers combining their extraordinary vitality with Hashirama Cells. Danzo presses him to complete research merging Hashirama Cells with the Sharingan 28.
News of Kabuto’s adoption draws Orochimaru to Haotian’s camp at night. Meihui discovers him, and Guy, Kakashi, and Iripo surround him. He withdraws rather than fight, but openly covets Meihui’s Mangekyo Sharingan 122.
During Haotian’s visit to the laboratory, Orochimaru privately imagines possessing his body and controlling Ghidorah’s power. He also demonstrates a fatal Hashirama-cell experiment on a living ninja and reveals a hidden laboratory containing sixty emaciated child subjects. Haotian secretly removes the young Yamato from this group 127 128.
Orochimaru subsequently cultivates an experimental replacement arm for Danzo. Five three-tomoe Sharingan prove insufficient to activate its Hashirama Cells; ten produce the desired result, and the arm is successfully transplanted 136 137.
Defection and attacks within Konoha
As Living Corpse Reincarnation approaches completion, Orochimaru identifies Haotian and Meihui as desirable hosts. When Danzo interrupts a ritual, the two negotiate continued secret cooperation: Orochimaru supplies research results, while Danzo provides protection and experimental subjects 139 142.
Orochimaru tells Anko that he intends to leave Konoha, rejects her, and places the Cursed Seal of Heaven on her neck. He then uses spies to locate Meihui, selecting her as his first intended host 142.
His attack on Meihui fails. Her Susanoo withstands his snake attacks and Kusanagi Sword, while Izanagi allows her to evade his subsequent lunge. He regenerates from severe damage and retreats. Rampaging through Konoha as the White Phosphorus Serpent, he also escapes the Third Hokage under cover of white phosphorus smoke 143 144 145.
The Third Hokage declares him an S-rank missing-nin and orders his elimination. Jiraiya leaves to pursue him despite opposition, while Danzo secretly instructs Haotian to assist his escape 146.
Defeat and survival
Haotian follows Orochimaru but rejects the role of Danzo’s subordinate, declaring that he has come to kill him for attacking Meihui. Orochimaru deploys snakes and controlled Iburi clan members; Haotian’s Radiation Zone annihilates the clan, and Orochimaru shows no remorse 148.
Orochimaru summons Manda against Haotian’s artificial creature. Discovering its connection to Wood Release intensifies his desire to steal Haotian’s research. He eventually attempts Living Corpse Reincarnation, only for Haotian to counter with a golden dragon form inside his spiritual world 149 150.
The spiritual world’s collapse devastates the surrounding forest. Haotian finishes the remaining White Phosphorus Serpent body and stores its corpse, but refuses to confirm Orochimaru’s death. A small white snake escapes nearby, revealing that Orochimaru has survived 151.
Danzo later seeks to reuse Orochimaru’s remaining research data and bodily tissues in renewed forbidden experiments. Orochimaru himself reappears while spying on the sealed First and Second Hokage, hoping to use them for research. The First Hokage senses him, and Pain attacks, producing a three-sided standoff 154 167.
Appearance
Orochimaru’s human appearance combines a tall frame, pale complexion, and snake-like eyes 27 28.
- Eyes: Usually described as golden with vertical, snake-like pupils; one battlefield passage describes crimson snake eyes 28 40 43.
- Tongue: Long and slender, frequently extended to lick his lips 43 105.
- Clothing: Wears white during laboratory work 136.
- Serpentine form: Becomes a giant White Phosphorus Serpent capable of causing extensive destruction 144 145.
Personality
Orochimaru treats control over life and death as the highest form of power. His fascination with unusual bodies, bloodlines, and vitality overrides concern for experimental subjects, including children. He presents immortality as a natural aspiration rather than a forbidden pursuit 28 128 142.
He conceals predatory intentions behind courteous speech and calculated smiles. Although intensely covetous of Haotian’s power and Meihui’s eyes, he retreats when circumstances are unfavorable and makes long-term plans when direct acquisition appears dangerous 122 127.
His caution does not prevent overconfidence. Believing Haotian helpless within his spiritual world, he celebrates the impending possession before Haotian overturns the technique 150.
Abilities & Skills
Snake techniques and summoning
Orochimaru deploys snakes for direct attacks, restraint, battlefield disruption, and escape 43 109 144 150.
- Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Releases thick venomous snakes from his sleeves to attack and entangle Chiyo’s puppets 43.
- Giant snakes: Swallow enemy ninja and break apart battlefield formations 109.
- Manda’s Array: Surrounds Susanoo with a massive formation of venomous snakes 144.
- Chakra-generated swarm: Restrains Haotian’s artificial creature, allowing Manda to counterattack 150.
- Manda: His strongest summoning beast, a giant purple serpent whom he appeases with a promise of ten sacrifices 149.
Living Corpse Reincarnation
A forbidden technique that transfers Orochimaru’s soul into another body, intended to grant immortality and access to a host’s abilities 139 151.
- Targets Haotian for his youthful body and Ghidorah power, and Meihui for her Sharingan 139 142.
- Uses powerful suction to draw Haotian into a dark spiritual space, where a viscous substance binds him 150.
- Fails against Haotian’s golden dragon counterattack; possession is not guaranteed even within Orochimaru’s spiritual world 150 151.
White Phosphorus Serpent and regeneration
Orochimaru’s serpent body can survive extensive cutting and attempt to reconnect severed sections 144.
- Returns to human form after Meihui repeatedly attacks his damaged serpent body 144.
- Uses white phosphorus smoke to escape the Third Hokage 145.
- Retains survival contingencies beyond the destruction of his visible body 151.
Biological experimentation and surgery
His research focuses on vitality, bloodline abilities, and artificial tissue 28 128 136.
- Dissects White Zetsu and investigates compatibility with Hashirama Cells 28.
- Conducts Hashirama-cell implantation experiments on adult and child subjects 128.
- Cultivates and transplants Danzo’s replacement arm using Hashirama Cells and ten three-tomoe Sharingan 136 137.
- Proposes that two Mangekyo Sharingan might activate the arm’s vitality, but does not test that alternative in the documented experiment 136.
Curse marks and sealing preparations
- Cursed Seal of Heaven: Places the mark on Anko, leaving her unconscious and requiring Haotian to seal its influence 142 146.
- Anti-Ghidorah preparations: Claims to have prepared sealing techniques sufficient to suppress Ghidorah; their effectiveness is not demonstrated 139.
