Geography and Layout

History

Nine-Tails Night and anti-Uchiha sentiment

The death of Fourth Hokage Minato Namikaze during the Nine-Tails attack left Konoha grieving, damaged, and leaderless until the retired Third Hokage, Sarutobi Hiruzen, resumed office. 2

A rumor that the Sharingan could control the Nine-Tails led many traumatized villagers to blame the Uchiha Clan for their losses. Although Hiruzen publicly stated that he trusted the clan, Shimura Danzō argued for a wanted order against it. 2

The village's leadership subsequently approved the Uchiha Clan's relocation to the outskirts, where it was isolated from the village center and continuously monitored. 4

Wars and internal political decline

After the Nine-Tails attack, Kumogakure attacked Konoha. Iwagakure later entered the conflict after Orochimaru defected, though Konoha's military strength eventually forced Iwagakure to withdraw and brought Kumogakure to an armistice. 3 4

The village's treatment of the Uchiha Clan became a central political crisis. Uchiha Jinghuo's rise, Danzō's death, and the destruction of the Shimura Clan severely weakened the existing leadership structure. 10 34

Konoha Collapse Plan and Fourth Shinobi World War

Konoha suffered the Konoha Collapse Plan while Orochimaru fought Hiruzen and Sunagakure invaded the village. Uchiha Genbu killed villagers during the chaos while Sunagakure was widely blamed for the massacre. 64 68 72

Hiruzen died during the conflict, leaving Konoha without a Hokage and with its Hokage Building destroyed. 68 75

Nara Shikaku became Acting Hokage and organized a defense against Kumogakure and Iwagakure. When Kirigakure joined the invasion, Konoha was forced into a three-front war. 77 78

Fifth Hokage administration

After Hiruzen's funeral, Utatane Koharu and Mitokado Homura attempted to install Jiraiya as Fifth Hokage. Nara Shikaku instead nominated Uchiha Shisui, supported by the Nara, Yamanaka, and Akimichi clans. 91 92

Shisui became the Fifth Hokage and confiscated the Utatane and Mitokado clans' assets, using the funds to cover unpaid allocations to village departments. The resulting improvement in administration caused villagers to reconsider the previous Third Hokage era. 99 102

Konoha later signed armistice agreements with Kumogakure, Iwagakure, and Kirigakure, obtaining major compensation. The revelation that Konoha had previously paid Kumogakure compensation despite winning its earlier war helped destroy public faith in Hiruzen's leadership. 102

Withdrawal and destruction

The Uchiha Clan announced its withdrawal from Konoha and left with its civilians, supplies, records, and equipment. The Nara, Yamanaka, Akimichi, Aburame, and Inuzuka clans followed, while Nara Shikaku invited villagers to depart along the Uchiha's route. 111

Hyuga Hiashi and half of the Hyuga Clan also joined the migration. The departure left Konoha politically and militarily hollow. 112 117

The Hyuga Second Elder became the Sixth Hokage, believing Konoha's foundations remained intact and intending to demand the Nine-Tails' return from the Uchiha. 117

Takigakure then infiltrated the weakened village. Its Seven-Tails jinchūriki killed the Sixth Hokage, and Takigakure began massacring Konoha's remaining residents. 117 118

Jinghuo arrived amid the attack, surrounded Konoha with volcanoes, and declared that he had come to destroy the village. Five days later, news of Konoha's destruction spread throughout the shinobi world. 119 121
