Background

Yuanshi Tianzun was one of the Three Pure Ones and an orthodox descendant of Pangu. He valued a disciple’s roots, fortune, and lineage; this made Xuanqing—a primordial Merit Spiritual Root—an ideal candidate in his eyes. When Taishang Laojun and Tongtian Cult Leader also sought Xuanqing as a disciple, Yuanshi declared their affinity and ultimately accepted Xuanqing as his first disciple after the Spiritual Root chose him. He bestowed a strand of Pangu’s Clear Qi and named him Xuanqing. The resulting merit elevated Yuanshi from early-stage to middle-stage Da Luo. 1 2

During Hongjun’s Purple Cloud Palace sermons, Yuanshi received Primordial Purple Qi and later the Innate Supreme Treasure Pangu Banner. He subsequently founded the Chan Sect on Kunlun Mountain, declaring that it would accept beings with pure roots and profound fortune to expound and illuminate the Great Dao. The merit from establishing the sect carried him into Sagehood. 19 20 68

As Chan Sect founder, Yuanshi elevated Xuanqing to Senior Brother of the sect and bound a portion of Chan Sect fortune to him through a Merit Fortune seal. When the coming Tribulation threatened the sect’s future, Yuanshi entrusted Xuanqing with guarding Kunlun Mountain’s spiritual veins and suppressing Chan Sect fortune. He later arranged a contest among Randeng, Antarctic Immortal, Yunzhongzi, and Xuanqing to determine an acting sect leader before ultimately naming Xuanqing Sect Leader. 72 119 158 210

Yuanshi Tianzun is a dignified, middle-aged Daoist with a majestic bearing. He is commonly seen in white or patterned Taoist robes and projects the natural, oppressive presence of a Sage. 4 157

Personality

Yuanshi is strict about orthodoxy, rank, propriety, and a cultivator’s innate foundations. He openly disdains beings he considers poorly born or burdened by undesirable karma, including Kunpeng, Yellow Dragon, and many of Tongtian’s more unruly disciples. His Chan Sect likewise prioritizes pure roots and deep fortune. 6 73 78 81

Despite his severity, he is intensely protective of those he recognizes as his own. He repeatedly shields Xuanqing from external threats, gives practical cultivation guidance, and rewards genuine diligence. He values Xuanqing not merely for merit and aptitude, but because Xuanqing possesses both devotion to the Dao and “humanity.” 11 22 75 120

Yuanshi is also calculating and farsighted. He encouraged Xuanqing’s journey to the Western Lands not only for its merit, but to create karmic ties with Jieyin and Zunti that could protect Xuanqing and bind the Mysterious Gate to the West. 41
