Background / History

Zunti originated in the devastated Western Lands alongside his senior brother Jieyin. During the Dao and Devil Conflict, the pair fought against Demon Ancestor Luo Hou at Mount Sumeru and survived only through Hongjun Dao Ancestor's protection. Luo Hou's final self-destruction destroyed the West's spiritual veins and filled the region with enduring Demon Qi, leaving Zunti and Jieyin to preserve what little purity remained around Mount Sumeru. 51

He attended Hongjun's Purple Cloud Palace lectures seeking a way to change the West's fate. Arriving late in tattered robes, Zunti first attempted to appeal to the Three Pure Ones' sympathy, only for Yuanshi Tianzun to dismiss him. 8 He then helped Jieyin secure a Prayer Mat from Kunpeng and personally pressured Hongyun into yielding his mat by invoking the suffering of the Western Lands' beings. 9

Hongjun later bestowed Zunti with Primordial Purple Qi and foretold that he and Jieyin could gain Sage Thrones by establishing teachings and making Forty-Eight Great Vows. 19 This foundation greatly elevated Zunti's strength before his eventual rise to sainthood. 48 49

Appearance

Zunti is depicted as an elderly Taoist priest whose outward demeanor alternates between genial enthusiasm and calculated sorrow.

  • Initially arrives at Purple Cloud Palace in tattered robes, appearing impoverished and travel-worn. 8
  • Has a troubled expression but shrewd, observant eyes. 8
  • Often wears an overly broad grin when trying to recruit or persuade someone. 220
  • Wields the Seven Treasures Wonderful Tree, a seven-colored Dao-proclaiming treasure. 49 220

Personality

Zunti is ambitious, opportunistic, and exceptionally skilled at turning hardship into leverage. At Purple Cloud Palace, he exploits Kunpeng's momentary absence to claim a Prayer Mat, then uses an emotional appeal about the West's suffering to persuade Hongyun to surrender his own seat. 9

He is persistent even when facing powerful opposition. Zunti attempts to establish kinship with Xuanqing by calling him a fellow disciple of Hongjun and addressing him as “nephew,” then intervenes against Patriarch Styx despite knowing Xuanqing is Yuanshi Tianzun's disciple. 47

His concern for the Western Lands is genuine, though frequently intertwined with personal and sectarian gain. He openly wishes to purge Mount Sumeru's demonic fiends and restore peace to the West, yet also seeks to use Xuanqing's purification ability and immense fortune to strengthen Western Teach. 52 74
