| Armor / Model | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mark I | 62 104 | Built in Afghan captivity with Dr. Yinsen from salvaged missile components; a crude but functional escape suit. |
| Mark II | 127 | Secretly developed with J.A.R.V.I.S. after Master Wang’s warning about Obadiah. Its first flight succeeded, but high-altitude icing nearly killed Tony. |
| Mark III | 130 | Gold-and-red armor deployed after Obadiah’s death; Tony used it to destroy a terrorist base before flying to San Juan. |
| Mark VI | 150 | Powered by an upgraded Arc Reactor, providing greater speed, functions, and overall combat ability. |
| Mark VII | 166 | Added a triangular arc pulse cannon, Vibranium-enhanced armor, underwater life support, fire suppression, combat analysis, and assisted martial-arts functions. |
| Mark IX | 287 | Tony’s active armor line during the Destroyer incident; its flexibility and versatility came at the expense of raw destructive power. |
| Anti-Thor Armor | 401 402 | A Vibranium-heavy experimental countermeasure modeled after Thor. It failed immediately when Mjolnir’s electrical output caused a catastrophic electromagnetic surge. |
| Anti-hero armor fleet | 476 479 | More than 50 AI-controlled suits designed to imitate and counter individual heroes. The project provoked widespread anger and was abandoned after the battle in London. |
Background / History
Tony disappeared after being kidnapped by terrorists in Afghanistan, where shrapnel lodged near his heart and a palladium-based miniature Arc Reactor kept him alive. In captivity, he and Dr. Yinsen constructed the Mark I armor from dismantled weapons; Yinsen later sacrificed himself to give Tony time to escape. 44 62 104
His return immediately restored market confidence in Stark Industries. However, Tony shocked the public by closing the company’s weapons division, causing its stock to collapse and beginning its transition away from arms manufacturing. 104
Master Wang later removed Tony’s shrapnel and warned him that Howard Stark had created a palladium substitute, while also cautioning him about Obadiah Stane. Tony became increasingly distrustful of everyone except Pepper Potts, secretly developing the Mark II and investigating Stark Industries’ hidden weapons orders. 107 108 127
Tony uncovered proof that Obadiah had arranged his kidnapping through the Ten Rings. Trapped at Stark Industries headquarters, he delayed Obadiah until Master Wang arrived and killed Stane. Tony publicly claimed responsibility for the incident, then introduced the Mark III and promised that Stark Industries would pursue clean energy, artificial intelligence, life sciences, advanced materials, and fringe science. 127 129 130
Personality
Tony is openly arrogant, self-centered, and addicted to demonstrating his superiority. He often dismisses ordinary people, boasts about his work, and acts before considering the social consequences of his inventions. His confidence can become recklessness, as shown by his premature use of the Anti-Thor Armor and his later deployment of counter-armors modeled after fellow heroes. 131 401 402 476
Despite this, Tony is deeply loyal to those who help him. He remembers Master Wang’s role in saving his life and guiding him toward Howard Stark’s legacy, and he is fiercely protective of Pepper. 181 386
He respects exceptional scientists even when he struggles to treat others tactfully. Fitz’s brain-mapping work immediately earned his attention, and Tony later greeted leading researchers at Azeroth Laboratory with unusual courtesy. 131 411
Tony’s experiences with terrorism, Obadiah’s betrayal, and the misuse of Stark weapons reshape his priorities. He comes to see protecting Earth as his personal responsibility and embraces the identity of Iron Man publicly. 129 178 451
