Classification and Manifestation

Yu Xiaogang divides martial souls into two broad categories while teaching Tang San. Plant-type martial souls are treated as a subset of Tool Martial Souls under this framework 26.

Awakening and Innate Soul Power

A martial soul is awakened in childhood and is accompanied by innate soul power. Yu Xiaogang's research holds that innate soul power is proportional to martial soul quality; his deduction that Tang San possessed a second martial soul rested on Blue Silver Grass supposedly being unable to produce innate full soul power by itself 21.

Soul Rings and Development

Soul masters obtain soul rings by killing soul beasts and absorbing the ring that forms from the beast's remains. Lin Ye's three-thousand-year Cyclops kill produced his first purple soul ring, which raised his soul power to rank 18 and granted his first soul skill. 16 17

Martial Soul Evolution

A martial soul can evolve following an appropriate soul-ring absorption. Lin Ye stated that his martial soul evolved naturally after he absorbed a suitable soul beast's ring. 106

• Lin Ye's Ghost Spirit possesses the innate ability Devour, allowing him to strengthen himself by consuming other soul masters' souls. 13

Domains

A domain is an area skill capable of suppressing opponents while enhancing its user. Dugu Bo notes that martial souls able to awaken a domain are exceptionally powerful, and that most users only obtain one after becoming Titled Douluo. 13
