Minato was Jiraiya's disciple and a Konohagakure Jonin before the Third Shinobi World War. While developing a hand-seal-less technique inspired by the Tailed Beast Ball, he struggled to stabilize the chakra sphere's shape transformation. After a breakthrough prompted by Jiraiya's popsicle gesture, he completed the Rasengan 41 43 44.

During the Rōran mission, Minato led Aoba, Akimichi Choza, and Aburame Shibi. He protected Naruto and Princess Sara against Mukade, used the Flying Thunder God to coordinate the battle, and sealed the rampaging Dragon Vein.
