Background
Obito attended the Ninja Academy after being overlooked by the Uchiha clan. He finished last in an assessment covering theory, the Clone Technique, taijutsu, and ninja-tool throwing—an embarrassment for Konoha’s strongest clan at the time. Fugaku responded by placing his training under Uchiha Tekka, leaving Obito regularly injured from harsh instruction 12.
Despite his poor academics, Obito was considered formidable in practical combat and had made noticeable progress among his classmates 31. His determination was closely tied to his feelings for Nohara Rin; he repeatedly tried to surpass Kakashi and later viewed Aoba as another rival for Rin’s attention 23 30.
Madara had White Zetsu monitor Obito before his Sharingan awakened, regarding his attachment to Rin as potential fuel for future despair 78. After Obito was crushed beneath the collapsing Kannabi Bridge, Madara kept him alive by integrating White Zetsu into the destroyed half of his body 79.
Appearance
Obito’s appearance changes sharply between his Academy years and his later life as the Masked Man.
- Wore goggles as an Academy student 23.
- Operated in a black robe and a tiger-patterned or vortex-style mask as the Masked Man 229 278.
- Has severe scars across half of his face, exposed when Aoba cuts his mask apart 275.
- His visible eye is usually a scarlet Sharingan behind the mask’s single opening 269.
Personality
As a student, Obito was loud, proud of his Uchiha name, and eager for recognition. He enjoyed attention, declared he could graduate early simply because Kakashi had done so, and failed to take Rin’s warning about his lack of Clone Technique mastery seriously 23. His jealousy over Rin’s admiration for Kakashi and Aoba often pushed him into reckless challenges 30 175.
Obito nevertheless values comrades deeply. When Kakashi prioritizes the Kannabi Bridge mission over Rin’s abduction, Obito rejects that logic and goes after her himself 187. After Rin’s death, however, his devotion becomes fixation: he rejects his former identity, adopts Madara’s name, and pursues a replacement world where Rin can exist 199 273.
His claim that the real world is false conflicts with his attachment to Kakashi. He leaves his eye with Kakashi as a connection to their shared past, then ultimately decides that reclaiming power matters more than preserving that anchor 278.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
Obito awakens a rare Two-Tomoe Sharingan directly rather than beginning at one tomoe. Its enhanced perception allows him to follow and counter Kakko’s movements during the rescue of Rin 187.
- Reads opponents’ movements with heightened visual perception 187.
- Uses Sharingan genjutsu to control the Nine-Tails during the Nine-Tails’ Attack 230.
- His remaining right eye remains active after Izanagi blinds his left eye 278.
Mangekyō Sharingan — Kamui
Obito’s Mangekyō technique is Kamui, a space-time ocular ability. It enables him to transport himself or targets into the Kamui dimension and phase parts of his body into that dimension to avoid attacks 199 275.
- Can become intangible by transferring the attacked portion of his body into another dimension 275.
- Can transport himself through spiraling spatial distortion 225.
- Can pull targets into the Kamui dimension, as shown when he brings Kakashi there 278.
- Can use Kamui to capture targets, including the Great Elder 298.
- Its intangibility can be understood and countered once its mechanism is known 275.
- Its duration is stated to last five minutes 293.
Wood Release
Obito can produce wooden spikes and other Wood Release attacks. Aoba dismisses it as “inferior Wood Release,” but it remains part of Obito’s combat arsenal 229.
- Creates hardened wooden spikes capable of piercing targets 229.
- Combines Wood Release with Kunai and Explosive Tags during ambushes 229.
Izanagi
Obito uses Izanagi after Aoba exposes Kamui’s mechanism and destroys his mask. The forbidden ocular technique turns an unfavorable outcome, including death, into illusionary unreality 275.
- Allows him to escape a lethal defeat 275.
- Permanently blinds the left eye used for the technique 278.
Tenseigan Ocular Power
After seizing the Great Elder, Obito draws upon the Giant Tenseigan’s power to force his transplanted left Sharingan into a Mangekyō evolution 298.
- Gains a second Mangekyō Sharingan through externally supplied ocular power 298.
- Views a complete pair of Mangekyō Sharingan as essential to reaching his greatest strength 278 281.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Academy goggles 23.
- Tiger-patterned and vortex-style masks 229 278.
- Black hooded robe 278.
- Kunai fitted with Explosive Tags 229.
Relationships
- Nohara Rin — Obito’s beloved teammate and the central reason for his pursuit of a replacement world. Her death drives his transformation and fixation 187 199.
- Hatake Kakashi — Teammate, rival, and former best friend. Obito gives Kakashi his Sharingan beneath Kannabi Bridge, later confronts him in the Kamui dimension, and attempts to reclaim the eye 187 278 281.
- Namikaze Minato — Obito’s former teacher. Obito resents Minato for failing to save Rin and for living the life Obito once wanted: Hokage, family, and recognition 230.
- Yamashiro Aoba — A longtime rival and major obstacle. Aoba helps trigger Obito’s initial Sharingan awakening, exposes Kamui’s mechanism, and repeatedly disrupts his plans 178 229 275.
- Uchiha Madara — Oversaw Obito through White Zetsu surveillance and preserved him after the Kannabi Bridge collapse by integrating White Zetsu into his body 78 79.
- Black Zetsu — Adviser and collaborator who helps Obito pursue further ocular power, including the Giant Tenseigan 293 294.
- Nagato — Uneasy Akatsuki partner. Both continue cooperating after Nagato publicly identifies him as Obito rather than Madara 293.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Academy Years
Obito ranks last in the Academy assessment, attempts early graduation after Kakashi’s success, and fails—particularly in theory 12 23. His desire to impress Rin leads him to challenge Aoba, but Aoba traps him in genjutsu and makes him attack a wooden post while believing he has defeated his opponent 31.
Awakening and Kannabi Bridge
Seeking the Sharingan, Obito approaches Aoba rather than relying on the Uchiha elders. Aoba exploits Obito’s belief in an “opportunity” to awaken his eyes 178. During the Kannabi Bridge mission, Obito rejects Kakashi’s mission-first stance, rescues Rin, awakens a Two-Tomoe Sharingan after Kakashi is injured, and is crushed in the cave collapse. He gives his eye to Kakashi before being left beneath the rubble 187.
The Masked Man and the Nine-Tails’ Attack
Having survived through Madara’s intervention, Obito becomes the Masked Man and gains Mangekyō Sharingan power. He visits Rin’s grave, discards its flowers, and vows to create a world where she exists 225. During the Nine-Tails’ Attack, he controls the Nine-Tails and targets Minato out of resentment and jealousy 230.
Aoba stages Obito’s apparent death using Hidan and a false Mangekyō display, causing Obito to believe Aoba can ignore Kamui and kill him with ocular power 230.
Kirigakure Conflict
Operating under the name “Uchiha Madara,” Obito controls Fourth Mizukage Yagura and tries to recruit Kisame. A message invoking Rin destabilizes him, forcing him to reveal his true voice and identity 273. Aoba then exposes the nature of Kamui, breaks Obito’s mask, and forces him to escape with Izanagi 275.
Reclaiming His Eye
Obito brings Kakashi into Kamui space to take back the Sharingan he entrusted to him 278. He discovers too late that Aoba had already replaced it with another Three-Tomoe Sharingan, leaving him without his original left eye and further deepening his hostility toward Aoba 281.
Giant Tenseigan
Seeking a way to strengthen his replacement eye, Obito follows Black Zetsu’s plan to exploit the moon’s Tenseigan power 293 294. He captures the Great Elder connected to the Giant Tenseigan and uses its ocular power to evolve his left eye into a Mangekyō Sharingan 298.
Notable Quotes
“In the ninja world, those who break the rules are trash. But those who don't cherish their comrades are worse than trash!”
— Obito during Rin’s rescue 187
“That naive idiot Obito died long ago! The one standing before you is Uchiha Madara!”
— Obito after his identity is exposed 273
“To create that world where Rin exists, I must obtain power!”
— Obito while forcing his left eye’s evolution 298
Trivia
- Obito is slightly older than Kakashi and underwent a major growth spurt after his rescue; by the Nine-Tails’ Attack, he was nearly as tall as Minato 154.
- His first awakened Sharingan manifested directly with two tomoe, an unusually rare occurrence in Uchiha history 187.
- Before Aoba replaced it, the Sharingan Obito gave Kakashi served as Obito’s last emotional connection to Konoha, Rin, and his former self 278.
