History

Disappearance of the Third Kazekage

The mysterious disappearance of the Third Kazekage threw Sunagakure into a leadership crisis. After failing to find him, the village accused Konohagakure of involvement, demanded his return, and massed forces along the Land of Fire border, helping ignite the Third Shinobi World War 104.

Kumogakure exploited Sunagakure's instability by attacking the Land of Wind. Rasa used the desert terrain and his Magnet Release to halt the Third Raikage's offensive, building the prestige that led to his rise as the Fourth Kazekage 117 129.

The Third Kazekage was in fact assassinated by Sasori, who later converted his body into a Human Puppet capable of using Iron Sand. This truth remained concealed from Sunagakure during the village's initial search and war preparations 114 143 264.

Rasa's Administration

Rasa inherited a village strained by fiscal deficits, factional conflict, and depleted forces. To consolidate authority, he treated Pakura and disobedient clans as expendable assets, assigning them to the Land of Water campaign against Kirigakure 129.

Pakura initially captured an island in the Land of Water, but after she was recalled, her replacement Rekishi expanded recklessly. Kirigakure's Seven Ninja Swordsmen counterattacked, destroyed Sunagakure's occupying force, and retook every captured island 146.

Rasa subsequently used Pakura as a bargaining chip in dealings with Kirigakure, effectively sacrificing the Scorch Release user despite her service and popularity. Kirigakure reported her death, allowing Rasa to publicly treat her as deceased, but Pakura later survived and began reconsidering her loyalty to Sunagakure 151 153 197 222.

False Alliance and the Land of Fire Invasion

Sunagakure negotiated an alliance with Konohagakure and demanded that Konoha withdraw its Land of Rivers border troops first as proof of trust 147 148. Rasa instead used the withdrawal to prepare an invasion, secretly securing Kumogakure's cooperation 152.

To mobilize the village, Rasa publicly blamed Iwagakure for Pakura's death and invoked revenge as the reason for Sunagakure's northward march 152. Its forces infiltrated the Land of Fire in scattered squads, looting settlements, killing civilians, and attacking merchant caravans rather than concentrating at the border 163 165.

The decentralized raids were a diversion. Rasa's elite force moved toward Mount Kikyo, intending to breach Konohagakure, seize its wealth and sealed ninjutsu archives, and secure resources for Sunagakure's recovery 165 166.

Battle of Mount Kikyo

Sunagakure launched a mass assault on Mount Kikyo under Rasa's command. Its vanguard combined Wind Release users with puppeteers, using wind to counter Fire Release and puppets to shield the advance 166.

The invasion was stopped by Konoha's veteran shinobi and Yamashiro Aoba. Rasa was defeated in direct combat, and Chiyo ordered a retreat to prevent the remaining Sunagakure elite from being wiped out 167 169 170.

Konoha discovered abducted Land of Fire children in a concealed cave after the battle. The children had been selected for ninja aptitude and were intended to be raised as Sunagakure shinobi 170.

Aoba deliberately left Rasa alive despite having the opportunity to kill him, judging that the Kazekage's death would drive Sunagakure's surviving forces into a desperate fight to the death 171.

Post-Invasion Condition

The failed invasion cost Sunagakure over half of its elite forces and left it unable to begin another major war, though it could still defend itself 177. Its Land of Rivers stronghold later received reinforcements, but its garrison avoided directly confronting Aoba after his repeated attacks on the camp 180.

Rasa later confronted Aoba again with Bunpuku and the One-Tail, Shukaku, in an effort to overcome his defeat. Aoba defeated Shukaku and forced Rasa to retreat 188 189.

Following the end of the Third Shinobi World War, Sunagakure remained wary of Aoba's accelerating power. Chiyo was among the leaders of the major villages who reacted with dismay to reports that he had defeated Kumogakure's A-B Duo and forced its forces to withdraw 201 257.

Exposure of the Third Kazekage's Fate

Sasori's involvement in the Third Kazekage's death was later directly exposed when he deployed the Third Kazekage Puppet against Aoba. The puppet retained the deceased Kazekage's Magnet Release and Iron Sand, demonstrating that Sasori had preserved the former leader's chakra pathways through his Human Puppet Technique 264.

Aoba defeated Sasori and seized control of the Third Kazekage Puppet with his own chakra threads, gaining possession of a weapon embodying one of Sunagakure's most consequential lost secrets 265.

Leadership and Politics

• Fourth Kazekage Rasa — Sunagakure's wartime leader. His rule was defined by consolidation of power, risky external campaigns, secret diplomacy, the sacrifice of Pakura to Kirigakure, and the invasion of the Land of Fire 129 144 152 153.
