Origin and Nature

Demon Nests are portions of the Heavenly Demon Realm—a world on the dark side of reality—that intersect with the human world when earth veins shift and magnetic fields invert. The intersecting territory manifests in reality as a Demon Nest, while the beings that emerge from it are called Heavenly Demons 9.

Great Chu discovered the Heavenly Demon Realm after mobilizing national resources three centuries after its founding. Humans cannot actively explore that realm directly; they encounter it through these passive dimensional collisions 9.

Demon Nests are sustained by a dimensional loophole between the Heavenly Demon Realm and the human realm. The human world's rule barrier restricts more powerful Heavenly Demons from freely descending, though changes in dimensional conditions can weaken those restrictions and trigger riots 483 629.

Characteristics

Demonic Qi

Demon Nests are permeated by demonic qi, which shapes their terrain, strengthens Heavenly Demons, and threatens human entrants.

• High concentrations can make breathing impossible even for powerful martial artists; the deepest area of the Level 4 Thousand-Headed Flood Dragon Demon Nest requires Fourth Great Limit Qi-Penetrating Body merely to breathe 98.
• Demonic qi in environmental hazards—including sandstorms—can enter the body, clog the windpipe, and kill those unable to endure it 360.
• The qi can corrupt or kill nearby vegetation; at the Crimson Malice entrance, pale-red qi withered surrounding trees into charred trunks 551.
• Advanced human technology is unreliable within a Demon Nest due to its internal rules 361.

Entry and Internal Space

A force field usually marks a Demon Nest's entrance. Crossing it exposes entrants to a surge of demonic qi before they pass through a distorted passage between worlds 359 360.

• Entrances may conceal the true scale of the territory beyond; Huangsha 011 appeared limited from outside but covered nearly 100,000 square kilometers internally 360.
• Internal passages vary in length. Higher-level nests are believed to have longer passages because of their greater dimensional distance from the human world 551.
• Demon Nests can possess independent celestial phenomena, including endless night, extreme cold, blazing heat, deserts, and sandstorms 353 398 432.
• Terrain altered by demonic qi can become both a habitat and a threat, such as Huangsha 011's Sharp Peak Stone Formation, where sandstone spires shelter hidden Heavenly Demons 362.

Nodes

A Node links one Demon Nest to another. Because a Demon Nest is land separated from the dark side of the world, Nodes can function as passages across otherwise distant nests 168.

• Nodes may allow powerful entities or forces from another nest to exploit an established connection 168 342.
• Destroying a Node can prevent a Heavenly Demon from entering the human world; Zhou Yun destroyed a Node to block the Ancestral Dragon's passage 399.
• Nodes can also connect to other realms, as seen when the Crimson Malice Nest was found linked to a shattered Buddhist Dharma Realm 557.

Classification

Demon Nest levels are determined by the concentration of demonic qi within them. In nests with a master, that master is the primary factor behind the nest's qi concentration and overall danger 206 360.

Inhabitants and Masters

Heavenly Demons are products of Demon Nests and originate from the Heavenly Demon Realm 9.

• Lower-, middle-, and upper-rank Heavenly Demons inhabit lesser nests, while Great Demons generally require at least Third Limit Martial Artists to confront 345 360.
• Great Demons possess varying degrees of intelligence and may flee or employ deception when outmatched 360.
• A Demon Nest Lord is the strongest Great Demon in a nest and determines its demonic-qi concentration 360.
• High-level Nest Lords may remain physically dormant while using powerful mental force to influence the human world, manipulate the Demonic Path, and pursue invasion and awakening 98.
• Conceptual Heavenly Demons can be more dangerous than solid-bodied demons: Mountain Whisper's spiritual power could extend beyond its entrance, unlike the Ancestral Dragon, whose physical body was constrained by Nodes 448.

Major Incidents

• A Level 4 Demon Nest in Guiyun Province required an unprecedented Great Chu demon-slaying force and more than two months of fighting to suppress. The conflict leveled the province's mountainous terrain into a basin 9.
• The Thousand-Headed Flood Dragon Demon awakened enough to battle Great Chu defenders, covering the skies with its shadow and unleashing annihilating mist from its many heads 101.
• A supposedly suppressed Level 3 nest erupted when Qimu, a tree demon whose aura nearly matched the Thousand-Headed Flood Dragon Demon, tore through its entrance with a Heavenly Demon horde 283.
• Mountain Whisper expanded its own nest by infusing it with divine power, transforming the territory into a “living cosmic war machine” 621.
• Dimensional changes caused widespread Level 3 and Level 4 riots across Great Chu, opening entrances and merging nest domains into the human world. These events displaced millions while expanding national territory by at least one million square kilometers 629.
• The Tree Realm's return led to more than ten newly born Demon Nests in Great Chu alone, forcing the state to suppress most of them while monitoring two remaining Ultimate Darknesses 696.

Containment and Exploitation

• Great Chu suppresses active nests through military cordons, Martial Artist deployments, and powerful guardians stationed at entrances 353 359.
• A conquered nest can be converted into a resource site, though it may remain vulnerable to intrusion through Nodes 168 182.
• Heavenly Demon remains, True Spirits, and nest resources can be exchanged through the Merit Armory system 361.
• Great Chu regulates resource extraction: hunters may take a single most valuable material from a Heavenly Demon killed inside a nest, while remaining materials are retained for official handling 553.
• The destruction of Mountain Whisper's human-world soul body led to a long-term scientific expedition into its domain; its internal temple was later destroyed to prevent renewed cosmic descent 627.
