Background / History

Ancient Origins and Position

The Brahmin Sect’s lineage predates humanity in the Great Heaven World. Even the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors could not overturn the foundations of these ancient Dao traditions. Following the disaster that ended the dominance of the Immortal and God races, the Brahmin, Mystic, and Demonic Sects rose within the reorganized world order 179 184 264.

Despite its ancient inheritance, the Brahmin Sect remained subordinate to the Mystic Sect’s overwhelming power in the Nine Provinces. Its eight lineages withdrew behind hidden mountain gates and sealed Pure Lands; few members traveled openly through the Nine Provinces during the preceding ten thousand years 179 264 295.

Great Tang World: Rivalry and Imperial Suppression

In the Great Tang World, the Brahmin and Daoist sects competed for believers and political influence. Maoshan’s hostility was particularly severe: Tao Hongjing had been forced to take Buddhist vows and practice both traditions to preserve his Daoist lineage 118.

The Brahmin Sect supported Li Shimin’s claim to the throne. He Heng considered Li Shimin replaceable and chose to attack the religious network behind him rather than assassinate its preferred candidate. He coordinated Daoist sects and a temporary Demonic Sect alliance while seeking Yang Guang’s approval for suppression 117 118 124 127.

In the autumn of the tenth year of Daye, Yang Guang issued an edict restructuring Buddhist institutions and terminology. He Heng enforced it at Jingnian Zen Monastery with twenty thousand Imperial Guards. Abbot Liao Kong submitted to avoid bloodshed, allowing the monastery’s statues, plaques, and attire to be changed 142 143.

Target Ordered replacement
Buddhist temples Palaces and temples under the new imperial religious order 143
Shakyamuni Heavenly Venerate 143
Bodhisattva Great Master 143
Arhat Venerable 143
Monk Virtuous Scholar, retaining hair and wearing a crown while carrying scrolls 143

He Heng’s purpose was to dismantle the sect’s faith and cultural identity, not merely confiscate its wealth. Imperial authority also intimidated ordinary believers who might otherwise have defended local temples 142.

After senior Brahmin figures were killed, Shi Feixuan succeeded Fan Qinghui at Cihang Jingzhai. She and the remaining three Holy Monks relocated the sect’s main strength to the Taiyuan area outside the Passes. Temples under Yang Guang’s control were dismantled or converted, but the sect’s grassroots network survived and continued supporting rebellions, including Li Yuan’s uprising 156 157.

Great Heaven World: The Galactic Realm Plan

The sect’s unusually large deployment to the City of No Sin attracted Mystic Sect scrutiny. Nearly twenty Cave True Realm experts arrived openly or covertly, far more than Lingtai Daoist considered necessary to investigate the Raw Stone 532 533.

Mystic Sect intelligence connected the stone to a secret plan known only to the eight branch masters. According to that intelligence, the plan was intended to overturn the Great Heaven’s balance of power and replace the Mystic Sect’s leading position 535.

Seven monks sacrificed themselves to activate Primordial Purple Qi and open a passage to the Great Heaven World. The resulting arrival of the Galactic Realm brought Kalama Bodhisattva and powerful Arhats into the conflict. Kalama intended to transform the Great Heaven’s living beings as part of his pursuit of Buddhahood 549 550 551 558.

Final Descent and Destruction

Hui Chuang Victorious King Buddha later descended with the Ninth Grade Golden Lotus under the Future Buddha Ancestor’s orders. Kalama and the assembled monks welcomed him as the figure who could strengthen their position in the Source Realms of All Heavens 791.

Maitreya ultimately attempted a direct breakthrough to Da Luo rather than first participating in the struggle among peak Progenitors. Spirit Mountain and the Great Thunderclap Temple manifested outside the Great Heaven during the attempt 816.

The breakthrough failed and destroyed the entire Brahmin Sect. Spirit Mountain fell, Thunder Sound vanished, all Buddhas entered Nirvana, and the Pure Lands ceased to exist. The destruction extended beyond its institutions: the concept and existence of “Buddha” disappeared from the Myriad Worlds of the Heavens 817.

Great Tang World Institutions

  • Jingnian Zen Monastery — A holy land in Luoyang’s southern suburbs, containing hundreds of buildings and led by Liao Kong and the Four Great Vajra Protectors 142.
  • Cihang Jingzhai — A leading Brahmin institution whose selection of a “destined emperor” directly challenged Yang Guang’s authority; Fan Qinghui was succeeded by Shi Feixuan 141 157.
  • Four Great Holy Monks — Major high-end combat assets. Emperor Heart Venerable belonged to the Huayan Sect; three remained with Shi Feixuan after the sect’s losses 149 157.

Doctrine and Cultivation

Consciousness and Awakening

The Brahmin Sect cultivates consciousness, rather than magical power. Its eight consciousnesses are listed as eye, ear, nose, mouth, body, mind, wei na, and Alaya. “Buddha” signifies a greatly enlightened wise one 558.

  • Buddhahood requires self-enlightenment, awakening others, and perfected awakening and practice 550 558.
  • Its stated teachings include the Four Great Emptiness, detachment from external objects, and equality of all beings 147 295.
  • Its cosmology takes the ultimate Eighth Consciousness as its foundation and derives matter, energy, and space from time. The Past Glorious, Present Virtuous, and Future Stellar Kalpas correspond to the river of time 380.

Cultivation Hierarchy

Brahmin attainment Corresponding cultivation realm Notes
Arhat Pure Yang True Immortal Highest achievement of the Lesser Vehicle Path 550.
Bodhisattva Gods and Demons Realm Surpasses Arhat; awakening and practice remain incomplete 550.
Buddha Mysterious Yellow Realm Achieved through perfected awakening and practice 550 558.
Buddha Ancestor Progenitor Realm Lord of a Pure Land; equivalent to a Mystic Sect Dao Lord 550 708.
Supreme Great Luo Beyond the ordinary cultivation system of the Myriad Worlds Attained by the earlier Buddha Ancestor; Maitreya’s attempt ended in catastrophe 708 791 817.

“Arhat” is also used as the title of Xing’s four Cave True Realm experts, below the formal attainment described above 532 550.

Abilities & Skills

Spiritual Influence

Brahmin methods excel at influencing the mind and spirit. He Heng explicitly judged this aspect superior to the Daoist Sect’s and created a Dharma of Universal Salvation that purified the heart by dispelling desires and emotions 216.

  • Advanced enlightenment can produce the Six Clairvoyances: Heavenly Eye, Heavenly Ear, Mind Reading, Divine Realm, Cessation, and Past Life 558.
  • Kalama’s cross-world mission sought to awaken others and complete his path toward Buddhahood 558.

Recorded Scriptures and Techniques

  • Supreme Enlightenment Worldly Understanding — A legendary supreme Buddhist secret scripture whose existence was described as almost unverifiable 41.
  • Nirvana Tribulation Scripture — Cultivated by Dao Jue, who retained abundant vitality and peak strength after eight thousand years 538.
  • Great Sun True Scripture — Dharma King Jinluo’s cultivation method 538.
  • Three Realms Great Law Seal — Jinluo’s destructive combat technique; his strength was comparable to an ordinary peak Cave True Realm expert 538.
  • Joint combat — Xing’s four Arhats possess longstanding coordination; their combined strength might resist even experts in the True Person Ranking’s top ten 532.

Resources / Sacred Items

  • Ninth Grade Golden Lotus — The sect’s foremost sacred object and the ancient Buddha Ancestor’s seat. It symbolizes supreme authority and rivals any one of the Mystic Sect’s three supreme treasures, though not their combined attack 550 791.
  • Pure Yang Immortal Artifacts and Pure Lands — Part of the ancient Dao traditions’ defensive foundations, alongside inherited techniques and accumulated resources 264.
  • Great Tang temple network — Thousands of temples, more than a hundred thousand monks, and extensive ties to local residents and tenant households gave the sect a grassroots advantage over its Daoist rivals 124.
  • Jingnian bronze hall — A conspicuous display of wealth. He Heng estimated the monastery’s resources at less than one-tenth of the entire Great Tang Brahmin Sect’s holdings 124.

Relationships

  • Mystic Sect — Dominant rival in the Great Heaven. Relations remained superficially cordial, but the Brahmin Sect sought its orthodox position, and Mystic authorities obstructed the Galactic Realm plan 383 532 535.
  • He Heng — Principal enemy during the Great Tang suppression. Later studied Brahmin cultivation for both strategic preparation and its value to his own Dao 124 142 558.
  • Daoist sects of the Great Tang World — Competitors for believers and lineage survival; Maoshan, Louguan Dao, and Celestial Master Dao opposed Brahmin influence 118 127.
  • Demonic Sect — Longstanding opponent, targeted alongside the Brahmin Sect through shifting alliances rather than permanent loyalties 124 127 156.
  • Ning Daoqi — Daoist grandmaster aligned with the Great Tang Brahmin Sect; his association made him an outsider among Daoist institutions 118.
  • Li Shimin — Preferred imperial candidate in the Great Tang World 117 118.
  • Yang Guang — Emperor whose edict enabled the conversion and suppression of Great Tang Buddhist institutions 141 142 143.
  • Huang Han — Targeted for conversion by Hui Chuang Victorious King Buddha after she was injured fighting Mu Heavenly Lord 805.
