This time, he intended to take away quite a few of Britain's elite troops, so he had to arrange the defenses in advance. He had Kevito lead the troops in guarding Portchester Castle. This place was considered the gateway to the western side of Britain Island. As long as Portchester Castle did not fall, Southampton would remain perfectly safe.

He was not particularly skilled at riding and had come from an infantry background. He would be more useful remaining behind to guard the rear. Duncan was definitely taking Clegane and the Sarmatian Rider with him.
"Pick out everyone who can ride a horse."
Duncan did not need every one of them to be elite. Besides being able to fight, there was another prerequisite: they had to know how to ride. At the very least, they needed to be at the level of Mounted Infantry. Anyone who had ridden horses in his previous life knew that riding a docile horse was not difficult—anyone with a little training could do it. But fighting on horseback was another matter entirely and demanded an extremely high level of horsemanship.
As long as they had some foundation in riding, they could become Mounted Infantry as soon as they got on a horse. That was Duncan's plan.
