Zhao Jianji first encounters Wu Dao at Lancang City, recognizing him as the “Skull-Crushing Hand.” He is a talkative and ambitious young man who admires strength but initially prefers administrative work to martial combat. After passing the White Whale Martial Arts Hall assessment, he is assigned with Wu Dao to Tan County as its clerk. 49 56

As clerk, Zhao Jianji handles the Tan County Branch Hall’s personnel, finances, logistics, strategy, and external dealings. He procures medicinal herbs for Wu Dao, manages seized assets during the Tan County purge, and cultivates connections among White Whale Martial Arts Hall officials. His family had served as civil officials for generations, and his smooth, highly social manner is attributed to that background. 56 63 67

While Wu Dao cultivates or acts elsewhere, Zhao Jianji expands the branch hall’s intelligence and recruitment network.
