Background

Rise in the Fifth Tribulation

The World-Slaughtering Emperor began with what was regarded as the worst possible foundation; observers once concluded that he would never escape the mortal realm. He rose through repeated slaughter and self-improvement, creating the Extreme Dao Slaughtering World Sutra to refine the essence of living beings into nourishment for his own advancement. 494 502

He cultivated Hard Tempering, Spirit Refining, and Soul Refining together, forging the Extreme Dao Physique and reaching the Hunyuan limit with all three paths. Before his foundation could become fully flawless, the Dragon Hunting Tower ambushed him during his ascent to the Thirty-Third Heaven and stole the origin of his tempered physique. 504

Opening the Tribulation

Despite the loss of one foundational path, he broke Hunyuan’s shackles, entered the Near-Dao Realm, and became the first being to open a tribulation through his own power. He led Shenhuang cultivators into several worlds—including Mysterious Yellow and Qingming—slaughtering on a scale that nearly cut off their inheritances. 414 495

His campaign made him the foremost taboo of the Fifth Tribulation. He slaughtered living beings across several worlds and drew much of Shenhuang’s cultivator population into his catastrophe, leaving Shenhuang to endure the consequences through later Great Calamities. 185 499

At the height of his campaign, the Great Heavenly Venerable intervened, transferred the Dao fortune and Mandate of Heaven to the Luotian Sword Master, and caused the Emperor’s strength to collapse. Later histories record that the Luotian Sword Master killed him at Buzhou Mountain, though the Great Heavenly Venerable’s intervention was decisive in his defeat. 377 495

Remnants and Return

The Emperor left behind remnants, Dao inscriptions, and trials rather than allowing his influence to disappear. A remnant within the Great Axe Ancestral Order challenged Wu Dao under equal-realm conditions, offering its inheritance to the victor and possession to the loser; Wu Dao destroyed it with a single strike. 299

His Dao Rhyme remained hidden within the Extreme Dao Bell. When Wu Dao threatened to discard the Bell and expose that imprint to hostile powers, the Emperor emerged from it and scattered the heavens’ titans. 414

Wu Dao later met him in person at the Ten Thousand Peaks Snowfield within Buzhou Abyss. The Emperor acknowledged their similar natures and honored a prior promise by bowing to Wu Dao, though their cooperation remained based on shared interests rather than trust. 502 503

Sixth Tribulation Activities

His return was driven in part by his unresolved grudge against the Dragon Hunting Tower. He offered Wu Dao a portion of his Dao essence, possessing the power of one Near-Dao step, for use against the Tower. 504

At Ninth Heaven Pass, his Dao-essence incarnation confronted the Tower’s Physique Ancestor, using his body to block the Chaos Sea and meeting the opponent’s Body Dao head-on. 510 511

After the Luotian Sword Master departed, the Emperor attacked Daluo Heaven aboard Buzhou Mountain. He devoured its civilization and Great Dao fortune, blood-sacrificed the Heaven Domain, tore five Extreme Daoists apart, and withdrew only after the remaining defenders activated the Heavenly Court’s Investiture of the Gods. 521 522

The World-Slaughtering Emperor commonly appears as a broad-backed, middle-aged man in grey robes, with crimson hair that hangs wild in the snow and wind. His restrained presence is compared to an inextinguishable sun and a pillar capable of holding up the heavens. 502
