Background / History

Coulson succeeded Nick Fury as S.H.I.E.L.D. Director after Fury could no longer manage the escalating threat posed by Bai Jing and the Order Society. Unlike Fury, Coulson considered himself better suited to defense than direct confrontation, yet inherited the responsibility of forming an Avengers Alliance against the Order Society. 88 93

He negotiated with Bai Jing during the incident involving Tony Stark and Obadiah Stane, arranging helicopter support to shield and supply Tony while S.H.I.E.L.D. could not safely remove him. He later paid Bai Jing for the release of captives, only to learn that Bai Jing would not hand them over immediately because three Order Society buildings had collapsed. 87 88

Coulson attempted to recruit Tony Stark into the Avengers Alliance after briefing him on Captain America and Bai Kunlun's abilities. Tony rejected the appeal, leaving Coulson uncertain whether Captain America alone could anchor the proposed team. 92 93

When Bai Jing demanded the Tesseract, Coulson struggled to locate its classified records after S.H.I.E.L.D.'s archives had been destroyed. Unable to determine the artifact's purpose before the deadline, he ultimately allowed Bai Jing temporary access to it. 95

Coulson later used Star Ring satellites to locate Bai Jing over the Indian Ocean and sought military authorization for a nuclear strike. Captain America doubted the plan, and Coulson subsequently realized that military officials had misled him about the operation's success. 117 118

In New Mexico, Coulson agreed outwardly to Bai Jing's demand that S.H.I.E.L.D. stop recruiting and employing “new Asian humans,” while privately intending to eliminate him. He assembled the Avengers around an opportunity to confront Bai Jing, authorizing the operation despite warnings from Natasha and Captain America. 143 145

The confrontation failed. After Bai Jing defeated the Avengers' assault, Coulson negotiated a truce and reluctantly agreed to support an Order Society referendum to prevent further conflict. 149 150

During Loki's theft of the Tesseract, Hawkeye—under Loki's control—shot Coulson in the heart. Tony Stark arrived shortly afterward, but J.A.R.V.I.S. determined that Coulson could not be saved. Natasha Romanoff was subsequently elected S.H.I.E.L.D.'s new Director. 156

Coulson is dutiful and persistent, continuing to act against threats far beyond S.H.I.E.L.D.'s understanding or capabilities. He takes Nick Fury's plans and legacy seriously, particularly the Avengers Alliance, and becomes visibly frustrated when Tony Stark refuses to cooperate. 93
