In the early morning, Li Ke felt an itch on his face. He reached out and lightly patted his face a few times, then moved his body and went back to sleep.
"Hee."
But when a silver bell laugh reached his ears, Li Ke immediately opened his eyes.
Looking to the side, Li Ke saw Jinx propping her chin with one hand, while the other hand swept a cluster of blue hair strands across Li Ke's face, pinching the strands and tickling his nose.
Seeing this, Li Ke reached out and brushed away Jinx's hair. His sleepiness vanished completely. He looked at her and said softly, "When did our relationship become so good?"
Jinx withdrew her hand. "Our relationship has always been this good, hasn't it? You even gave me candy when we were little."
"Did that really happen?" Li Ke couldn't quite remember. He got up and rubbed his face.
With his adaptability maxed out, he had accepted transmigration, a Golden Finger, and Thresh's attention all in one day. So, accepting that he was sleeping in the same bed as the Black Alley Mad Young Lady now didn't seem so strange?
After all, compared to being mad or dangerous, could Jinx really be more dangerous than Thresh?
Of course not.
Jinx said somewhat seriously, "Yes, I remember it very clearly."
"Also, Li Ke, you should get up. I'm hungry," Jinx continued to say to Li Ke.
"So?"
"So you go buy me food. I don't have any money," Jinx said.
"I don't have much money either," Li Ke replied.
The money Malson left him was only enough for a few days of meals for himself. But now, with Jinx added, it would be spent in less than two days.
"Okay, then I'll go get money? Don't worry, I know the fastest way to get money." Jinx took out her gun and twirled the trigger. Li Ke was genuinely afraid she'd accidentally fire it.
Thinking of Jinx's method of getting money, Li Ke sighed.
Whether it was Jinx or Vi, the ways Zaun people got money were usually only three. One was to honestly work for the Skinny Guys and earn some hard-earned money from them. Another was to team up and go to the Skinny Guys' homes to steal something to sell. The last one was the most primitive and violent method.
Clearly, Jinx's way of getting money was the third option.
"I understand. I'll go make food. You wait here for me." Li Ke got up, took off his jacket, and put it on.
Jinx, on the other hand, lay back on the bed casually. Hearing him, she lifted her legs and propped her hands on her waist on the bed, her posture seeming to signal that she had heard him.
Li Ke didn't say anything else. He turned and pushed the door open.
On the way to the restaurant, Li Ke saw many gangsters along the road. Looking at them, and then thinking of Jinx lying on his bed, Li Ke felt a bit helpless.
What would happen to Silco if he knew Jinx was lying in his bed?
Hmm.
The best-case scenario would probably be getting shot dead, and the worst-case scenario would be being used by Silco's men to catch sharks?
Li Ke had no doubt about that.
Although he found Silco charismatic and quite liked him while watching the War of Two Cities, now that he was actually in Zaun and possessed the memories of this place, Li Ke knew what Silco had brought to Zaun.
Under Silco's violent rule, the people of the lower city felt both fear and hatred towards him, with no trace of gratitude.
No matter how you put it, even if Zaun truly gained independence under Silco's leadership in the future, how could the suffering of the people of Zaun at this moment be alleviated?
Focusing only on the results and ignoring the process often leads to losing many things.
Because of this, Li Ke sometimes truly wished that Silco and Vander could merge. If that were the case, Zaun would definitely become better. With Silco's iron fist combined with Vander's ideals, Zaun would truly unite, rather than being in its current state.
Reform requires blood and pain, but they were not the ones paying the price.
"Hey, please, sir, I haven't eaten in three days."
"Sir, do you want some Glow? It's the latest batch. I guarantee it has no side effects!"
"No! Please don't take my child away!"
The sounds of suffering reached Li Ke's ears. Li Ke ignored them, walked to the front of a restaurant, pushed open the door, and went in to order two meals.
One was boiled Magic Swamp Frog Leg Meat, and the other was Bread with Crushed Stones and Impurities.
Carrying the food, Li Ke returned home.
"Wow! Is that Magic Swamp Frog Leg Meat?"
As soon as he entered, Jinx rushed up to Li Ke, leaning over and peering in. Her little nose twitched as she smelled the aroma wafting from the food container. She looked up, her bright blue pupils filled with excitement, and Jinx exclaimed, "I haven't eaten this in so long! How did you know I liked this?"
"Silco doesn't let me eat these things. He says they're not clean. He often cooks for me himself, but his cooking is really not good." Jinx reached out and snatched the food container. With two fingers, she pinched a piece of leg meat, put it on top of her head, opened her mouth, let go, and then gobbled down the leg meat.
Li Ke: "."
"I'm glad you like it. There's also some bread here." Li Ke handed over the bread beside him.
"I'm not eating that. It doesn't taste good," Jinx said with disdain after glancing at it.
The bread she ate came from the Upper City – soft, delicious, and sweet. She didn't want this hard, dry bread.
Li Ke didn't mind when he heard this. He tore off a piece of bread and stuffed it into his mouth, chewing.
With splinters of wood and sand in his mouth, Li Ke swallowed the bread and then looked at Jinx, asking, "How many days are you planning to stay here?"
"You're kicking me out?" Jinx tilted her head, looking at Li Ke with a perfectly calm expression.
But her hand, which had been reaching for food, stopped. Her body also turned towards Li Ke.
"Forget it, stay as long as you want." Li Ke rubbed his cheek, which was sore from chewing bread.
"Yay!" Jinx cheered up. She reached out again for the Muddy Frog, took out a leg, and then offered it to Li Ke.
"Eat," she told Li Ke.
Just as Li Ke was about to take it, Jinx pulled it away. Then she put her hand in front of Li Ke again, looking at him. "Eat."
Li Ke blinked, opened his mouth, and Jinx reached in, "poking" it into Li Ke's mouth.
The Muddy Frog meat was soft and mushy, with an indescribable fishy smell and a strange texture. As Li Ke closed his mouth, he even touched Jinx's fingers.
"It's quite tasty," Li Ke said, swallowing with difficulty.
Jinx beamed with joy.
Li Ke, meanwhile, went back to chewing his dry bread.
Late at night, in the core area of Zaun's Black Alley. This place looked much more prosperous than the outer areas of the Black Alley. People gathered in the very center. Wealthy merchants in top hats, tattooed gang members. In front of a huge sculpture, people opened their mouths to drink the purple liquid sprayed from the sculpture.
At the very center was a tavern. The strange sign at the entrance was covered in graffiti, making the sign look like a bright, large eye. The people of Zaun called it the Fugen Tavern.
Glancing past the flashing neon lights and rowdy music on the first floor, past the patrons smoking Glow and flying drugs, a woman with a Mechanical Arm and a resolute face walked straight up to the forbidden second floor of the Fugen Tavern.
She knocked on the door outside the second floor. After a moment, a low voice sounded.
"Enter."
Pushing the door open, the second floor of the Fugen Tavern was covered in various strange graffiti. On the desk, books, cups, and all sorts of things were covered in cute blue and pink drawings.
On an old chair, a man sat quietly. He wore a tight-fitting vest over a red shirt, and his hair was meticulously combed. He was facing away from the woman, holding a mirror and drawing something.
Upon closer inspection, one could see he was applying makeup, drawing on half of his face in the mirror. That half of his face had various scars, but with the movement of his hands, those scars were gradually covered. He raised his hand, turning the mirror behind him. His scarlet eyes glanced at the mirror. He put down the mirror, reached out to the table, and felt for a lighter decorated with two smiling eyes.
He put a cigar in his mouth and lit it.
The man turned his chair, placing his hands together on his abdomen. He looked extremely elegant.
"You're back?"
Silco said.
