Background / History

Pero was a highly gifted student of an Old Mage. His talent allowed him to learn spells rapidly, and he once treated magic with humility and a desire to explore its possibilities. A serious injury caused by another mage later deprived him of his ability to use magic. 42

Unable to accept this loss, Pero left his mentor and established the Red Hat gang in Bilgewater. Although he became a gang leader, he retained the mindset of a disciple whenever he met his teacher, while his desire to cast magic again grew into an obsession. 41 42

Years before the conflict with the Dark Sea Throne, Pero saved an old man in the Serpent Isles. In return, the man told him about the World Runes. Pero subsequently investigated the World Rune rumored to lie east of Bilgewater and learned that the Iron Anchor Gang possessed a map connected to it. 35

Personality

Pero is ambitious, proud, and volatile when his authority or plans are challenged. After learning that the Dark Sea Throne had taken the World Rune map he had sought, he redirected most of Red Hat’s intelligence resources toward investigating Jiang Chuan’s organization. 35

Despite his ruthlessness as a gang leader, he is deeply attached to his mentor and retains genuine reverence for magic. He ultimately refuses Jiang Chuan’s initial offer to restore his powers in exchange for Red Hat, choosing instead to resume study under the Old Mage. 42 43

His later decision to ally with the Dark Sea Throne is pragmatic: it preserves his people, restores his magic, and gives Red Hat a place within a stronger organization. 44

Conflict with the Dark Sea Throne

After Red Hat’s infiltration effort against the Iron Anchor Gang fails, Pero discovers that a heavily armed and disciplined force has acted against the gang. Learning that the stolen scroll is tied to a World Rune, he identifies the Dark Sea Throne as his primary target. 34 35

Pero responds to the Dark Sea Throne’s attacks with fury, offering a 3,000-gold-coin reward for Jiang Chuan’s head and ordering a pursuit. The pursuit is devastated by traps and explosions, forcing Red Hat to withdraw with heavy losses. 37 38

He then joins forces with Bagana’s Iron Hook Gang, using their bombs in another planned strike. The alliance proves ineffective, and Bagana retreats rather than commit to a costly fight. 39 40 41

Choice Between Power and Magic
