Background / History
Early Unity and Information Purchase
Akasaka initially considers Class B a “united and loving family,” but believes Ichinose's excessive kindness prevents its talented students from realizing their potential. He judges that a capable strategist supporting her could substantially strengthen the class 1.
Within five days of enrollment, Ichinose establishes a group chat containing all 40 classmates. However, she initially lacks awareness of interclass rivalry and openly lets Akasaka see its messages 8.
The class purchases school-system information from Akasaka for 1 million Personal Points, with Hoshinomiya supervising the transaction. He explains class competition, the first month's behavioral assessment, and why monthly Personal Point allocations are not fixed at 100,000 9.
First Promotion and Rivalry with Class A
Akasaka uses Ichinose and Kamuro Masumi in a surveillance-based scheme involving littering and cleanup, while provoking additional penalties against the original Class A. The resulting first-month standings place Class B ahead, earning it promotion to Class A 17 18.
The students celebrate the promotion, and Hoshinomiya offers to pay for a karaoke outing. She specifically asks Ichinose to invite Akasaka 18.
The lead remains narrow: a later standings report gives Ichinose's class 1,015 points against Sakayanagi's 985. Sakayanagi's cohort eventually recovers first place before the island exam 64 80.
Deserted-Island Exam
Ichinose's class organizes its work peacefully but initially intends to occupy only one checkpoint. Katsuragi finds it easy to send observers into its camp, making its designated leader vulnerable to identification 81 86.
Akasaka recommends changing the leader during the final thirty minutes. Kanzaki supports the proposal, and Ichinose accepts the 30-point withdrawal cost as preferable to the penalties for having their leader correctly guessed 87.
The class finishes third. Himeno Yuki welcomes the resulting sense of urgency, suspecting that Akasaka has been encouraging the class to become dependent on him 91.
Cooperation and Dependence
During the following cruise-ship negotiations, Akasaka approaches the restored Class A as part of his plan to unite all four classes. His exchanges with Himeno expose her analytical ability, prompting Ichinose and Kanzaki to consider using her talents more actively 98 99 100.
Ichinose and Kanzaki later acknowledge that they relied heavily on Akasaka in the previous two exams. Although their lead over Class B approaches 300 points, both argue that continued dependence on another class's leader is unsustainable 111.
Second-Year Competition
In the castle-based island exam, Ichinose chooses to defend the class's castle rather than pursue aggressive expansion. Hikigaya supports this approach and prepares defensive traps with a budget capped at 100 points 297.
His pitfall trap catches the attacking first-year Classes C and D, allowing his class to seize their castles. Nevertheless, Asuna's cohort overtakes Ichinose's in the final rankings 306 313.
Afterward, Ichinose remains the public leader, while Hikigaya acts as strategist and handles most practical class affairs 319.
Abilities & Skills
Class Cohesion
- Rapid organization: Ichinose unites all 40 original members through a shared group chat within five days 8.
- Orderly cooperation: Students carry out island-survival assignments harmoniously 81.
- Collective political support: Akasaka expects the entire class to support his student council presidential campaign because of its unity 129.
Strategic Support
- Kanzaki's judgment: He supports the last-minute leader replacement after weighing its cost against potential exam penalties 87.
- Himeno's analysis: She recognizes the danger of dependence on Akasaka before the class openly confronts that problem 91 100.
- Hikigaya's defensive planning: He anticipates an enemy alliance and uses a pitfall trap to defeat its assault 306.
Limitations
- Low competitive aggression: The class initially settles for a single island checkpoint rather than contesting more territory 81.
- Weak information security: Ichinose exposes class communications before understanding the competitive system; rival observers later infiltrate the island camp easily 8 86.
- Reliance on outside assistance: Ichinose, Kanzaki, and Himeno each identify dependence on Akasaka as a threat to the class's independence 91 111.
Relationships
- Ichinose Honami — Leader of the original cohort and the central figure in its early unity; later leaves much of its administration to Hikigaya 8 319.
- Hoshinomiya Chie — Homeroom teacher who supervises its information purchase and pays Akasaka for assistance in the class competition 9 93.
- Kanzaki Ryuji — Trusted adviser who supports Ichinose while pressing the class to develop greater independence 87 111.
- Himeno Yuki — Classmate whose skepticism toward Akasaka reveals both strategic insight and concern for the class's autonomy 91 100.
- Shiraha Chihiro — Designated leader during the first island exam and a protective supporter of Ichinose 86 88.
- Hikigaya Hachiman — Strategist who eventually exercises most operational authority within the original cohort 297 319.
- Akasaka Ryunosuke — Paid information broker and recurring ally whose interventions help secure Class A status, but also create concerns about dependence 9 18 91 111.
- Sakayanagi Arisu's cohort — Rival for first place; repeatedly exchanges the Class A and Class B positions with Ichinose's group 64 80 313.
