Background / History

Mahiru is the Shiina Family head's second granddaughter. Although she was considered decently talented in every area, her cousin Shiina Mashiro's extraordinary artistic success caused Mahiru to be unfavorably compared with her from childhood. Her mother's resentment and her father's neglect left Mahiru meek, humble, and desperate for approval. 228

Despite this upbringing, Mahiru excelled academically. Her school awarded her a monthly living allowance of 118,000 yen and waived her tuition after she placed first in her studies. Her mother later took Mahiru's savings, accused her of immoral behavior, and expelled her from the apartment Mahiru had been paying for. 229

While homeless during a rainstorm, Mahiru encountered Akasaka Ryunosuke. Moved by his kindness despite his own circumstances, she took him into her home and began caring for him. Their initially sibling-like arrangement became romantic after Akasaka nursed her through a cold and handled the household work in her place.
