Background / History

Ding Yishan served as a brigade general under the Divine Phoenix Army’s Army Lord, Luo Shenhuang. During the assault on Duan Yun Pass, he addressed the Death Row Camp as Divine Phoenix Army soldiers and demanded absolute obedience. He then executed captured Northern Barbarian prisoners to demonstrate that the enemy could be killed, before ordering the camp to attack the pass first. 1

His initial strategy treated the Death Row Camp as an expendable force intended to exhaust Duan Yun Pass’s defenses. However, when Ding Hao became the first soldier to scale the walls and opened a breach, Ding Yishan immediately led the main Divine Phoenix Army force into the assault. He personally intercepted and killed the Northern Barbarian general Man Poqi, a True Martial Realm expert. 2 3

After the battle, Ding Yishan confirmed Ding Hao’s Merit of First to Ascend, punished Zhang Dahu for falsely accusing him of fleeing, and promised to report Ding Hao’s merit to the court. When the court instead required Ding Hao to earn all Four Great Military Merits for a pardon, Ding Yishan expressed regret and provided him with the incomplete Heavenly Tyrant Body Art, Wind Treading Steps, and Golden Bell Shield. 4 6

Ding Yishan discovered that Zhang Dahu had used his name to lure Ding Hao into an ambush. Upon arriving at the scene, he accepted that Ding Hao had acted in self-defense against Zhang Dahu, Zhao Chou, and Wang Tong, though he warned that Zhang Dahu’s brother, Zhang Dalong, would seek revenge. 9 10

During the Tianman Mountain Range campaign, Ding Yishan organized the Elite Vanguard Camp to rescue Luo Shenhuang from the Northern Barbarian encirclement. He later found both Luo Shenhuang and Ding Hao alive after believing the vanguard had been wiped out. 11 16

Following Luo Shenhuang’s removal from command, Ding Yishan remained aligned with Ding Hao. He led the Town Mountain Camp to reinforce the Death Row Camp against Zhang Dalong’s Mad Dragon Camp and condemned Zhang Dalong’s unauthorized attack as mutiny. 49 50

Ding Yishan is a disciplined and pragmatic commander. He initially accepts the Death Row Camp’s role as a sacrificial assault force, but he recognizes genuine merit when he sees it and acts decisively to protect soldiers who have earned it. 1 4

He understands that the court’s special-pardon condition is intended to obstruct Ding Hao, recognizes the danger posed by Zhang Dalong, and advises Luo Shenhuang to reward Ding Hao with cultivation resources rather than titles that cannot overcome his death-row status. 6 10 18

Despite being weaker than Zhang Dalong, Ding Yishan repeatedly confronts him to uphold military law and protect Ding Hao. 19 20 50
