Background / History

Zhang Dalong was regarded as the Divine Phoenix Army's fiercest general, with status and martial strength surpassing brigade general Ding Yishan. His younger brother, Zhang Dahu, held the post of Death Row Camp commander largely because of Zhang Dalong's influence. 10

After Ding Hao killed Zhang Dahu in self-defense, Zhang Dalong went to the Death Row Camp to avenge him. He attempted to have Ding Hao executed for insubordination, then disguised a murder attempt as a saber-sparring session after Ding Yishan invoked military rules. 18 19

Zhang Dalong delivered three saber strikes against Ding Hao. Ding Hao survived all three and severely wounded Zhang Dalong during the final exchange; Luo Shenhuang then intervened and warned Zhang Dalong against further private vengeance. 20

During the campaign against the Northern Barbarians, Zhang Dalong repeatedly competed with Ding Hao for major military merits. He attempted to seize the credit for capturing the enemy banner and later interfered with Ding Hao's attempt to kill Man Potian, contributing to Man Potian's escape. Luo Shenhuang fined him three months' military pay after investigating the incident. 25 29 30
