Background

Luo Shenhuang and Xia Weiyang were orphaned childhood friends. While Xia pursued a place in the imperial palace, Luo Shenhuang disguised herself as a man and enlisted at thirteen. Her martial strength carried her from commander of a thousand men to general and ultimately military commander. 18

Before the Former Emperor's death, Luo used the Divine Phoenix Army's force to suppress opposition and help Xia Weiyang ascend as Great Zhou's Empress. Afterward, Luo became increasingly disillusioned with Xia's governance and treatment of meritorious soldiers. 18

Personality

Luo Shenhuang is fiercely devoted to the security of Great Zhou and its northern people. She regards the elimination of the Northern Barbarians as a duty worth risking her standing, command, and life for. 35 36

She is principled in her treatment of soldiers. She protects Ding Hao from Zhang Dalong's vendetta, recognizes merit publicly, and accepts responsibility when she realizes that her proposed reward for Ding Hao was impossible to fulfill. 17 18 20

Her loyalty to Great Zhou initially restrains her from rebellion even when Xia Weiyang turns against her. Learning of her pregnancy shifts her priorities toward protecting her children and Ding Hao. 45 48

History

Northern Barbarian Ambush

Luo Shenhuang was trapped in a basin after Man Potian's Northern Barbarian forces ambushed the Divine Phoenix Army. The Elite Vanguard Camp's arrival revived the surrounded army's morale, allowing her to delay Man Potian until the main force could break through. 13

During the ensuing melee, Man Potian ordered his forces to kill her at any cost. Wounded and poisoned, Luo collapsed near Ding Hao; although she first ordered him to flee, he carried her out of the battlefield and sheltered her in a cave. 15

The poison required immediate detoxification. Luo later acknowledged that Ding Hao had saved her life and chose not to blame him for what occurred. 16

Rewarding Ding Hao

Luo publicly granted Ding Hao the Merit of the Vanguard, an advance promotion to commander of a thousand men, and material rewards for saving her. When Ding Yishan explained that Ding Hao's death-row status made those rewards effectively empty, she regretted her mistake and sought more meaningful compensation. 17 18

After Zhang Dalong seriously injured Ding Hao, Luo stopped the attack, reprimanded Zhang for bullying a death-row soldier, and had Ding Hao moved into her tent for treatment. She later rewarded him with the Golden Silk Soft Armor, One Qi Cultivation Method, and Three Talents Saber Technique. 20 21 22

Defying the Imperial Court

Luo sent the court a report supporting Ding Hao's amnesty after investigating his case and hearing his account of Xia Weiyang's actions. 31

When Xia ordered the Divine Phoenix Army to halt the northern expedition and instead travel south to pick lychees, Luo wrestled with the conflict between imperial obedience and her duty to the northern people. Ding Hao's poem and story of Yue Fei helped her recognize the danger of surrendering the campaign's momentum. 34 35

She ultimately led the army onward, declaring that those unwilling to defy the decree could leave. Even twelve Golden Edicts failed to change her decision. 35 36

Fall of the Northern Barbarian Royal Court

Luo protected Ding Hao from Man Poshen's Tiger Bone Arrow and refused the Northern Barbarian king's offer to spare the Divine Phoenix Army in exchange for retreat. 40

At the Royal Court Palace, Man Poshen burned his bloodline and nearly killed her. Ding Hao's ninety-percent Primordial Barbarian Bloodline suppressed Man Poshen, enabling Luo to seize the opening and kill him. 42 43

Following the victory, Luo credited Ding Hao as the army's greatest contributor to the campaign and held a celebration banquet for the Divine Phoenix Army. 44

Recall to the Capital

Anticipating Xia Weiyang's retaliation, Luo appointed Ding Hao as the next Army Lord of the Divine Phoenix Army and entrusted him with the army's seal. She believed he was the only person capable of preventing Zhang Dalong or the Empress from taking control of the force. 45

Xia Weiyang then ordered Luo to disarm and return to the capital. Luo accepted the decree to prevent the Divine Phoenix Army from openly rebelling, despite her generals' resistance. 46

In the Imperial City, Luo openly condemned Xia for abandoning the northern campaign and for framing Ding Hao. An imperial physician subsequently revealed that she was pregnant with Dragon Phoenix twins; Luo later identified Ding Hao as their father. 47 48
