Background
Sun Mo was originally a human Dragon Ball fan from Earth. After dying in an accident involving a truck, he reincarnated as a Saiyan infant on Planet Vegeta. His Saiyan parents had already died while conquering another planet, leaving him an unnamed war orphan under the neglectful care of hired staff. Knowing Frieza intended to exterminate the Saiyans, Sun Mo rapidly absorbed nutrient fluid, exercised within his pod, shattered its glass cover with his head, and escaped in a one-person spacecraft bound for Earth 1.
He crashed on Mount Paozu, where Son Gohan took him in alongside Son Goku. Sun Mo warned Gohan that both boys could transform into Great Apes, allowing their adoptive grandfather to prepare for the danger. He and Goku grew up as brothers, hunting, farming, and training together; Sun Mo's competitiveness pushed their development, while Gohan taught them that labor could itself be cultivation 2 4.
After meeting Bulma during the Dragon Ball hunt, Sun Mo became her boyfriend but refused to abandon his training goals for an easier life in West City. He later trained under Master Roshi, pursued high-gravity conditioning with Bulma's Gravity Chamber, and repeatedly sought stronger opponents and harsher training environments 6 17 30.
Appearance
As he matured, Sun Mo became unusually tall for his age, with a sturdy, extensively trained physique. His appearance is repeatedly described as sunny and handsome, drawing immediate attention from Bulma and others 4 21 22.
- Tall, straight-backed build and strong physique 4 22
- Black bangs and dark eyes in his base form 94
- Often wears weighted clothing during combat and training 38
- His Super Saiyan forms give him golden hair and green eyes; Super Saiyan 2 adds lightning, while Super Saiyan 3 lengthens his hair and removes his eyebrows 118 134 175
- Super Saiyan God gives him vivid scarlet hair and a crimson divine aura, while Super Saiyan Blue replaces these with an azure aura 203 206
Personality
Sun Mo is disciplined, competitive, and intensely committed to self-improvement. He favors gradual, sustainable training over reckless short-term gains, carefully managing rest, food, and recreation alongside his Gravity Chamber exercises 30 51. Even when offered the power of the Tree of Might, he rejected it as a shortcut built on the destruction of other worlds 86.
He is confident in battle and often blunt toward enemies, but he is not needlessly cruel. He saved Bulma from the Red Ribbon Army, rescued Lapis and Lazuli, spared Turles after breaking his fighting spirit, and allowed King Piccolo's descendant to live despite defeating Piccolo himself 47 57 75 90.
Sun Mo also has a stubborn preference for direct clashes. His confidence in his durability leads him to trade blows, use his head as a weapon, and endure attacks that other fighters would evade 40 118 119.
Although he remains committed to protecting his family and Earth, his willingness to use increasingly ruthless methods in battle has affected his state of mind. When confronting Majin Buu, he was unable to perform Soul Punishment because he was no longer considered pure of heart 175 197.
Abilities & Skills
Saiyan Physiology and Transformations
Sun Mo's Saiyan body gives him exceptional strength, appetite, durability, and potential for growth through training.
- Developed enough strength as an infant to break an incubation pod and escape Planet Vegeta 1
- Stopped a moving truck with his bare hands 4
- Adapts to extreme gravity; progressed from struggling at twenty times Earth's gravity to adapting to one hundred times gravity 30 77
- Transforms into Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, and Super Saiyan 3 118 134 175
- Considers Super Saiyan 3 a stamina-intensive transitional form whose energy consumption is disproportionate to its power increase 184
- Had his latent potential fully drawn out by Old Kai, allowing him to wield overwhelming base power without relying on Super Saiyan transformations 192 193
- Achieved Super Saiyan God and later Super Saiyan Blue through divine-ki training 203 206
Ki Control
Sun Mo can conceal, release, and shape his ki with considerable precision.
- Can alter his displayed combat-power reading to mislead scouters 86
- Withstood Tien Shinhan's Kamehameha by condensing an aura around his body; the attack did not damage even his clothes 68
- Fired an energy sphere powerful enough to leave a massive crater during his fight with Piccolo 94
- Formed an aura shield that held air around his body for survival in space 113
- Uses ki sensing to locate people before teleporting to them with Instant Transmission 169 170
- Caught Majin Buu's Special Beam Cannon in his palm after Old Kai released his potential 194
- Learned to contain godly ki within his body, enabling his Super Saiyan Blue breakthrough 206
Divine Ki
Sun Mo can use divine ki after attaining Super Saiyan God.
- His Super Saiyan God aura cannot be sensed through ordinary ki perception 203
- Developed Super Saiyan Blue by refining and controlling the divine ki of his god form 206
- Initially struggles to sustain Super Saiyan Blue due to the form's rapid ki consumption 206
Kamehameha
Sun Mo can perform the Turtle School's signature energy beam.
- Extinguished the fire engulfing Mount Frypan with a single Kamehameha 17
- Uses the technique offensively against powerful opponents, including Janemba 186
- His early display of the technique was strong enough to impress Master Roshi and prompt the latter to offer training 17
- Overpowered Majin Buu's copied Kamehameha after his potential was unlocked 193
Spirit Bomb and Soul Punishment
Sun Mo studied King Kai's spiritual techniques during his time in the Other World.
- Learned the principles and required state of mind for the Spirit Bomb from King Kai 179
- Planned to use a Spirit Bomb against Majin Buu while Goku and Vegeta restrained the enemy 197
- Attempted Soul Punishment against Majin Buu, but failed because his heart was no longer pure enough to use the technique 197
Iron Head Technique
Sun Mo's favored close-range technique is a headbutt reinforced by years of conditioning.
- Used it to break free from his incubation pod as an infant 1
- Endured Jackie Chun's attacks to create an opening, then struck him with a headbutt 40
- Exchanged headbutts with Frieza and later used the technique to smash Frieza down 118 119
- Its effectiveness depends on the gap in combat power; Sun Mo acknowledged that it could not overcome Frieza's superior base strength before his transformation 118
Martial Arts and Footwork
Sun Mo combines physical resilience with increasingly refined combat movement.
- Learned through repeated exchanges with Korin rather than fixating on obtaining the Ultra Divine Water 45
- Mastered Korin's footwork well enough to evade Yamcha's attacks without allowing a single hit to touch his clothes 84
- Uses weighted clothing and high-gravity exercises to reinforce his fundamentals 30 38
- Favors rapid combinations of elbows, knees, punches, and kicks in close combat 38 119
- Instructed Future Trunks in combat posture, evasion, endurance, and the importance of maintaining one's will beyond apparent physical limits 132 133
Flight and Mobility
- Log-Riding Flight — Rides atop a thrown pillar or log, using it for rapid travel; can make a round trip between Kame House and West City in under an hour 18 22.
- Flight Technique — Achieved conventional flight and studied Piccolo's more efficient aerial movement after defeating King Piccolo 75.
- Instant Transmission — Teleports himself and companions by locating a target's ki signature 164 169 170.
Fusion Dance
Sun Mo learned the Metamoran Fusion Dance in the Other World.
- Learned the technique from Metamoran brothers and intended to teach it to Goku and Vegeta for the battle against Majin Buu 190.
Equipment
- Gravity Chamber — Uses adjustable high gravity for long-term physical conditioning; later lends one to Vegeta and Nappa 30 99.
- Weighted undershirt — Worn during the World Martial Arts Tournament, concealing part of his strength 38.
- Saiyan spacecraft — The one-person pod he used to flee Planet Vegeta; its technology later helped Dr. Brief develop the Gravity Chamber 1 22.
- Senzu Beans — Uses Korin's restorative beans to immediately recover stamina during his training at Korin Tower 45.
- Hoi-Poi Capsules — Carries capsule-based items, including a capsule house and funds for Raditz 96.
- Z Sword — Extracted the sacred sword from the Supreme Kai Realm in Super Saiyan 2, then broke it and released the Old Kai sealed within 190.
Relationships
- Son Goku / Sun Wukong — Adopted brother and longtime training rival. The two were raised by Son Gohan, train together, and repeatedly fight side by side against major threats 2 37 86 117.
- Son Gohan — Adoptive grandfather who raised Sun Mo and Goku on Mount Paozu and introduced them to cultivation through daily labor 2 22.
- Bulma — Wife and mother of Sun Mo's daughter, Sun Zhuo. Bulma supports his training with technology, while Sun Mo protects and reassures her during crises 18 30 163 168.

- Korin — Mentor whose speed and footwork became the foundation of Sun Mo's later movement technique 44 45.
- Piccolo — Rival turned ally. Sun Mo repeatedly defeats him but acknowledges his growth; Piccolo later agrees to protect Bulma and Sun Zhuo during the mission involving Broly 94 170.
- Vegeta — Fellow Saiyan and competitive counterpart. Sun Mo overwhelms Vegeta with his combat power, but still gives him access to a Gravity Chamber so he can improve 99 100.
- Future Trunks — Student and sparring partner in the future timeline. Their two years of Hyperbolic Time Chamber training led directly to Sun Mo's Super Saiyan 2 breakthrough 132 134.
- Android 18 — Training partner from the Other World who develops unreciprocated feelings for Sun Mo. He uses his influence to secure her kind treatment in Heaven, trains with her after his death, agrees to help revive her, and later remains focused on his family and martial growth despite her advances 165 180 190 192 203.
- King Kai — Other World mentor who teaches Sun Mo the principles of the Spirit Bomb and asks him to investigate threats beyond Earth 168 179.

Dragon Ball Hunt and Turtle School Training
He joins Bulma and Goku's search for the Dragon Balls, protects Bulma from Roshi's demands, destroys Pilaf's mecha, and extinguishes Mount Frypan with the Kamehameha. These actions lead to Roshi training him and Goku at Kame House 10 17 20.
World Martial Arts Tournaments
Sun Mo uses high-gravity training and weighted clothing to widen the gap between himself and his peers. He battles Goku in the tournament, strategically cuts Goku's tail to end his Great Ape rampage, defeats Tien without injury, and later defeats Yamcha through Korin-derived footwork 30 38 68 84.
Red Ribbon Army and King Piccolo

Saiyan and Frieza Conflict
After Raditz's arrival, Sun Mo recruits the surviving Saiyans into extreme training rather than immediately killing them. On Namek, he takes over when Goku cannot defeat Frieza, becomes a Super Saiyan, and defeats Frieza after the transformation shifts the balance of power 96 99 117 118.
Future Timeline and Androids
Sun Mo travels with Future Trunks to an alternate future where he had died on Planet Vegeta as an infant. He trains Trunks in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, achieves Super Saiyan 2, and later defeats Android 18 after initially holding back 126 134 145.

Resurrection and Majin Buu Conflict
After being revived, Sun Mo receives Old Kai's potential-unleashing ritual and gains enormous power without needing to transform. He moves the battle with Majin Buu to the Supreme Kai Realm to protect Earth, overwhelms Buu in combat, and later joins Goku and Vegeta against Little Buu while preparing a Spirit Bomb 192 193 197.
Divine Training and Later Threats
Eleven years after the Majin Buu conflict, Sun Mo participates in the ritual that grants him Super Saiyan God and subsequently develops Super Saiyan Blue through divine-ki control training with Goku 203 206.
During the later Goku Black and Zamasu crisis, Sun Mo identifies Zamasu as a visitor from another parallel timeline. When the two Zamasus use the Potara Earrings to fuse, Sun Mo deliberately allows the fusion, judging that one opponent would be easier to handle than two 217 229.
