Background / History

Goku was raised on Mount Paozu by Son Gohan alongside Sun Mo, whom Gohan treated as Goku’s brother. As a child, Goku was initially prone to crying, but he grew into an eager hunter and trainee; he and Sun Mo hunted a Hammerhead Boar and trained through farm work. 1 2

Gohan subjected both boys to demanding practical training, including labor, dodging hornets, and escaping sharks. Goku’s competitiveness with Sun Mo pushed both of them to improve, though Gohan deliberately avoided early weighted training out of concern for their growth. 4

After meeting Bulma, Goku left Mount Paozu to search for the Dragon Balls. During the journey, Master Roshi gave him the Flying Nimbus, which Goku could ride because of his pure heart. 6 10

Raditz later identified Goku as his younger brother and confirmed his Saiyan origins. Rather than accepting Raditz’s claims unquestioningly, Goku remained loyal to the life and family he had built on Earth. 93

Following Majin Buu’s defeat, Goku spent eleven years living peacefully on Mount Paozu with Chi-Chi, Gohan, and Goten. He worked the fields, enjoyed family outings, and continued training whenever possible. 203

Appearance

Goku is a Saiyan martial artist usually seen in the orange Turtle School gi made for Master Roshi’s disciples. 31

  • Has a Saiyan tail that can regrow. 35
  • Becomes a giant Great Ape under the full moon, though he initially loses control in that state. 38
  • His Super Saiyan forms give him golden hair and aura; Super Saiyan 2 adds crackling electricity, while Super Saiyan 3 lengthens his hair to his waist and removes his eyebrows. 159 182
  • Super Saiyan God gives him a crimson aura, while Super Saiyan Blue produces a restrained azure aura and blue hair. 203 206
  • During Zamasu’s body-swap attack, Goku was temporarily trapped in Zamasu’s green-skinned body before recovering his own body through Captain Ginyu’s Body-Swap Technique. 216 233

Personality

Goku is single-mindedly enthusiastic about martial arts and strong opponents. He volunteered to retrieve the Dragon Ball from the burning Mount Frypan castle, eagerly entered the World Martial Arts Tournament, and regarded future androids as opponents worth facing rather than threats to eliminate preemptively. 16 31 128

He values strength earned through training rather than shortcuts. When Turles relied on the Fruit of the Tree of Might, Goku rejected his methods and attributed his own power to hard work. 86 87

Despite his love of battle, Goku is compassionate. He refused Frieza’s offer to become a subordinate, saved Krillin from Turles’s subordinates, and chose not to kill Cell after defeating him, instead telling Cell to train and fight again when stronger. 89 116 159

Goku can also be socially oblivious: he forgot Chi-Chi despite their engagement and unintentionally intruded on Sun Mo and Bulma’s privacy using Instant Transmission. 78 149

Although he is often carefree, Goku is fiercely protective of his family. Even while trapped in Zamasu’s far weaker body, he placed himself between Goku Black and Chi-Chi and Goten, refusing to let the stolen owner of his body harm them. 216

Goku is respectful toward sincere opponents regardless of their origin. During the Universe 6 tournament, he returned Frost’s courtesy and encouraged him to fight at full strength. 241 242

Abilities & Skills

Saiyan Physiology

Goku possesses the durability, rapid growth potential, and recovery-based power gains of a Saiyan.

  • His tail enables Great Ape transformation under a full moon, but the form initially leaves him berserk and uncontrollable. 38
  • Recovery from severe injuries can produce a substantial increase in strength, as seen after taking a Senzu Bean during the battle against Turles. 88
  • He can suppress and sense ki, allowing him to identify threats and locate targets. 92 149
  • His Saiyan appetite is immense, particularly after recovering his original body from Zamasu. 233 235

Martial Arts

Goku is a close-range fighter whose style emphasizes physical strength, adaptable movement, and endurance.

  • Defeated a larger tournament opponent with a single punch. 31
  • Used his regrown tail to defeat Giran. 35
  • Defeated Mr. Satan with a gentle tap after judging his attacks too weak to be threatening. 67
  • Fought Perfect Form Cell through continuous tactical adjustment, combining dodges, blocks, and changing attacks rather than relying only on raw combat power. 157
  • Even in Zamasu’s much weaker body, he could evade and contest Goku Black through combat instincts, reactions, and superior fighting experience. 216
  • His adaptable style allowed him to maintain an advantage over Kid Buu in Super Saiyan 3 despite Buu’s extreme regeneration. 196

Kamehameha

Goku learned the Turtle School’s signature energy wave after observing Sun Mo use it at Mount Frypan.

  • Initially damaged Bulma’s car while attempting the technique. 17
  • Used the Kamehameha in combat against Turles, striking him after being knocked into the ground. 87
  • Countered Cooler’s Supernova with a full-power Kamehameha and destroyed him. 126
  • Can fire the technique at planet-threatening power, though he must account for collateral damage. 158

Flight and Flying Nimbus

Goku can fly through ki control and also uses the Flying Nimbus for travel.

  • Master Roshi gave him the Flying Nimbus after confirming his pure heart. 10
  • Rode the Nimbus to assault the Red Ribbon Army headquarters. 53 55
  • Uses aerial mobility extensively in battles against Frieza, Cell, and Broly. 117 159 172

Instant Transmission

Goku learned Instant Transmission during his post-Namek training.

  • Locks onto another person’s ki to cross vast distances instantly. 127
  • Used it to return to Earth and to visit Sun Mo and Vegeta. 149
  • Used it tactically against Cell, appearing beneath him to launch a surprise full-power Kamehameha. 158
  • Its convenience is offset by Goku’s habit of arriving without warning. 149

Godly Ki

After becoming a Super Saiyan God, Goku learned to use divine energy that ordinary fighters cannot sense.

  • Achieved Super Saiyan God through a ritual involving five righteous Saiyans lending their power. 203
  • Trained with Sun Mo to keep godly ki contained within his body rather than allowing it to leak outward. 206
  • His Super Saiyan Blue form is a Super Saiyan transformation that surpasses Super Saiyan God through refined godly ki control. 214

Transformations

Goku’s transformations are central to his later battles.

  • Great Ape — A moon-triggered Saiyan transformation that enormously increases his size and destructive power, but initially removes his self-control. 38
  • Super Saiyan — Golden-haired form used to overpower Cooler. 125
  • Super Saiyan Muscle Form — A strength-focused Super Saiyan variation with poor speed and high physical strain. 150
  • Super Saiyan 2 — Achieved through rage after Krillin’s death; vastly outclasses Perfect Form Cell. 159
  • Super Saiyan 3 — A later breakthrough that surpasses Super Saiyan 2 and decisively outpowers Cell’s lightning form. 182
  • Super Saiyan God — A crimson-haired divine form gained through the power of righteous Saiyans. 203
  • Super Saiyan Blue — An azure Super Saiyan form powered by contained godly ki; initially difficult for Goku to maintain for long periods. 206 214

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Flying Nimbus — Cloud that only pure-hearted individuals can ride; awarded by Master Roshi. 10
  • Power Pole — Extendable staff used against the Red Ribbon Army, including to destroy a fighter jet. 55
  • Senzu Beans — Restore his injuries and stamina, while also triggering Saiyan recovery growth after severe damage. 88

Relationships

  • Sun Mo — Adoptive brother, longtime rival, and regular sparring partner. Goku trusts Sun Mo to take over against foes he cannot defeat. They later attained Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue through shared training. 1 37 98 117 203 206
  • Son Gohan — Adoptive grandfather who raised Goku and taught him practical training and martial arts foundations. 1 2 4
  • Master Roshi — Turtle School master who recognized Goku’s potential and trained him alongside Sun Mo and Krillin. 17 31
  • Krillin — First true friend and fellow Turtle School disciple. Krillin’s death triggered Goku’s Super Saiyan 2 breakthrough. 31 159
  • Chi-Chi — Wife; their engagement was approved by the Ox-King, though Goku later forgot her until their relationship developed further. They later raised Gohan and Goten together on Mount Paozu. 16 78 97 203
  • Gohan — Son with Chi-Chi. Goku considered training with him in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, but accepted that Gohan preferred becoming a scholar. 121 147 148
  • Goten — Younger son of Goku and Chi-Chi. Goten admires Goku’s strength and followed his father’s example even in small habits such as eating quickly. 203 216

  • Whis — Beerus’s angel attendant, who knows the Forced Separation Technique and separated the fused Zamasu and Goku Black. 233
  • Zamasu / Goku Black — Divine adversary who stole Goku’s body and used it in an attempt to eradicate mortals. 216 217
