Background / History

Vegeta is the surviving prince of the Saiyan race. As a child, he witnessed his father, King Vegeta, humiliated by Beerus; the incident destroyed his reverence for his father. 178

Following Planet Vegeta’s destruction, Vegeta served under Frieza alongside Nappa. He initially treated Saiyan pride as paramount, condemning Raditz’s pleas for mercy as disgraceful and choosing to travel to Earth after detecting the planet’s unexpectedly powerful fighters. 93

On Earth, Sun Mo revealed Frieza’s role as a threat and offered Vegeta access to a Gravity Chamber and Senzu Beans. Confronted with Sun Mo’s combat power of five million, Vegeta committed himself to extreme training rather than accepting inferiority. 98 99 He learned that Saiyan near-death recoveries could increase strength, but accepted Raditz’s warning that the benefit diminished without a foundation of grueling training. 100

Dodoria’s disclosure that Frieza had exterminated the Saiyans turned Vegeta openly against the Frieza Force. He killed Dodoria and Zarbon, intending to erase Frieza’s organization in revenge. 103 104

After repeatedly witnessing Sun Mo, Goku, and the future Trunks surpass him, Vegeta pushed his Gravity Chamber training to three hundred times gravity and repeatedly trained himself to the point of near death. 123 126 135 This relentless pursuit eventually enabled his Super Saiyan transformation and continued advances beyond it. 138 150 155

Following the Broly and Majin Buu crises, Vegeta remained committed to surpassing the other Saiyans while gradually accepting his role as a father. Over the following decade, he trained Trunks harshly but took pride rather than anger when Trunks awakened a green Super Saiyan form and surpassed him. 203

When Sun Mo and Goku achieved Super Saiyan God through a ritual, Vegeta rejected borrowed power and resolved to cultivate godly ki on his own. He succeeded several months later, attaining Super Saiyan God through self-training. 204 207

Personality

Vegeta is intensely prideful, competitive, and obsessed with surpassing stronger Saiyans—especially Sun Mo and Son Goku. Defeat does not make him retreat from training; it makes him pursue harsher methods and more dangerous opponents. 99 147 150

His pride frequently becomes recklessness. He dismisses opponents he considers beneath him, slaughtered Namekians to obstruct Frieza’s Dragon Ball search, and fought Android 18 and Cell alone to prove himself. 106 138 141 154 His defeats by Frieza, Android 18, Perfect Cell, Broly, Majin Buu, and Golden Frieza repeatedly expose the limits of this attitude. 112 141 157 170 196 211

Despite his arrogance, Vegeta values earned strength. He rejects effortless power gains once he learns they create future bottlenecks, and he recognizes the need for disciplined training and capable sparring partners. 100 149 150

Vegeta’s pride remains uncompromising even when cooperation would be safer. During Frieza’s return, he refuses to gang up on Frieza because he considers one-on-one combat essential to Saiyan dignity. 213 Nevertheless, his experiences have made him more protective of his family and more willing to act as a defender; after swiftly defeating Bojack’s group, he admits that saving the world is not entirely unpleasant. 181 203

Learning that Universe 6 Saiyans are guardians rather than planetary conquerors rekindles Vegeta’s racial pride and gives him a more positive perspective on what Saiyans can be. 239

Appearance

Vegeta is a short Saiyan with sharply upright black hair. He previously wore a Frieza Force scouter and can transform into multiple Saiyan forms. 93 104 111

  • Hair — black and upright in base form; golden as a Super Saiyan; sharper in Super Saiyan 2. 104 176
  • Tail — possesses a Saiyan tail, which enables Great Ape transformation; Frieza severs it during their battle. 112
  • Great Ape form — a fur-covered giant standing dozens of meters tall. 111
  • Super Saiyan God — manifests a crimson divine aura and red pupils after Vegeta independently awakens godly ki. 207
  • Super Saiyan 3 comparison — observes Sun Mo’s long-haired, browless form with shock, as Vegeta himself has not reached it. 175

Abilities & Skills

Saiyan Physiology

Vegeta’s Saiyan body becomes stronger after recovering from near-fatal injuries.

  • Near-death recovery produces major power increases. 100 110
  • The effect depends on prior hard training and diminishes when Senzu Beans are used as a shortcut. 100
  • His tail allows Great Ape transformation under a full moon or artificial moon. 111
  • Losing his tail forcibly returns him to base form. 112

Ki Control and Sensing

Vegeta learns to operate without Frieza Force scouters.

  • Can sense an opponent’s location and strength through ki. 100
  • Uses energy concealment and rapid movement to attack Frieza’s troops without scouters detecting him. 107
  • His controlled energy attacks include Big Bang Attack, Final Flash, and Prince Tactics. 104 156 211
  • He can regulate the wide barrage of Prince Tactics to avoid striking the ground and endangering Earth despite its immense destructive output. 211

Big Bang Attack

Vegeta’s signature energy-sphere attack.

  • Vaporizes Dodoria. 104
  • Destroys Android 19. 138
  • Fails to affect Broly, demonstrating the latter’s overwhelming durability. 170

Final Flash

A high-output finishing attack used against Perfect Cell.

  • Vegeta attempts it after Cell’s Perfect Form overwhelms him. 156
  • Cell remains confident enough to receive the attack head-on. 156
  • The attack severely injures Cell, but Cell survives and evolves further. 157

Prince Tactics

A rapid-fire ki-blast barrage associated with Vegeta’s battle style.

  • Vegeta uses it against Frieza as a storm of crimson energy blasts, each powerful enough to flatten a mountain. 211
  • Despite its scale, Golden Frieza emerges from the barrage completely unharmed. 211

Transformations

Vegeta has mastered several Saiyan transformations through training and emotional breakthroughs.

  • Great Ape — multiplies his strength tenfold, but reduces his effective speed and agility. 111 112
  • Super Saiyan — allows him to overpower Android 19. 138
  • Super Saiyan Muscle Form — increases raw strength, but severely hinders speed and endurance. 150
  • Super Vegeta — lets him dominate Cell’s evolved second stage. 155
  • Super Saiyan 2 — achieved through overwhelming frustration at being unable to aid Sun Mo against Broly. 176
  • Super Saiyan God — independently attained through Vegeta’s own understanding and cultivation of godly ki rather than the Saiyan ritual. 207

Combat Training

Vegeta pushes his body to extremes in pursuit of greater power.

  • Endures high-gravity training, beginning at thirty times gravity and demanding an increase to fifty times. 99 100
  • Raises his Gravity Chamber training to three hundred times gravity and repeatedly trains himself to near death. 135
  • Trains with Son Goku in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. 149 150
  • Masters Super Saiyan Muscle Form in one month, though he initially cannot maintain it for long. 150
  • Continues intensive training for more than a decade and personally trains Trunks. 203
  • Returns to the modified, time-unlimited Hyperbolic Time Chamber to pursue Super Saiyan Blue and further power. 215 238

Relationships

  • Sun Mo — Saiyan rival and benchmark for Vegeta’s ambition. Sun Mo exposes the enormous gap between them, trains him indirectly through the Gravity Chamber, and later rescues him from Broly. 98 99 170 Sun Mo respects Vegeta’s determination to attain godly power independently and later encourages his pursuit of Super Saiyan Blue. 204 215
  • Son Goku / Sun Wukong — fellow Saiyan and principal rival. Vegeta trains with him in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, but resents Goku’s repeated breakthroughs. 149 150 159 Their rivalry continues into the godly-ki era, and Vegeta joins Goku’s preparations for the Universe 6 tournament. 203 238
  • Nappa — longtime Saiyan comrade. They travel from Earth to Namek together and share a desire for revenge against Frieza. 93 104
  • Raditz — fellow Saiyan and former subordinate within the Vegeta Elite Squad. Raditz guides Vegeta through Earth’s Gravity Chamber and Senzu Bean training. 91 99 100
  • Frieza — former master and sworn enemy. Vegeta rebels after learning Frieza destroyed Planet Vegeta, but is decisively defeated by Frieza’s transformations. 103 104 110 111 112 Years later, Golden Frieza overwhelms Vegeta even after he attains Super Saiyan God. 211
  • Piccolo — adversary who confronts Vegeta over the Namekian village massacre. Their conflict briefly gives way to a proposed alliance against the Ginyu Force. 106 108
  • Android 18 — defeats and humiliates Vegeta despite his Super Saiyan form, becoming a major motivation for his later training. 141 143 147
  • Cell — opponent Vegeta eagerly challenges after each evolution. Vegeta defeats Cell’s second stage as Super Vegeta, but is crushed by Cell’s Perfect Form. 155 156 157
  • Anya — Vegeta’s wife. She worries that he may abandon their family when he leaves Earth with Paragus. 165 166 167
  • Trunks — Vegeta’s son, whose combat power exceeds 10,000 at birth. Vegeta thinks of him while facing death against Broly. 136 170 Vegeta later trains Trunks strictly and takes pride when Trunks awakens a green Super Saiyan form that surpasses Vegeta’s own strength. 203
  • Paragus — deceives Vegeta with a false promise of restoring the Saiyan race, intending to use Broly to avenge his exile. 166 170
  • Broly — Legendary Super Saiyan who easily defeats Vegeta and shatters his confidence in his own Super Saiyan power. Vegeta’s helplessness during Broly’s battle with Sun Mo ultimately triggers his Super Saiyan 2 breakthrough. 170 171 176
  • Majin Buu — an enemy so powerful that Vegeta cannot withstand him for even ten seconds when trying to assist Goku. 196
  • Cabba — a Universe 6 Saiyan whose peaceful, guardian-based civilization contrasts sharply with Vegeta’s experience of Saiyans as Frieza Force conquerors. 239

Story Role / Major Arcs

Arrival on Earth and Namek Campaign

Vegeta and Nappa head to Earth after Raditz’s distress call reveals fighters strong enough to destroy his scouter. 93 After a month of accelerated training, Vegeta leaves for Namek ahead of Sun Mo’s group, wanting to confront Frieza alone. 100

On Namek, Vegeta kills Frieza Force officers, massacres a Namekian village to deny Frieza the Dragon Balls, and initially treats Piccolo with contempt. 104 106 108 His power surges after recovery and initially lets him challenge Frieza directly, but Frieza defeats his Great Ape form. Captain Ginyu then swaps bodies with Vegeta, allowing Frieza to kill Ginyu while he occupies Vegeta’s body. 110 111 112

Android and Cell Crisis

Having become a Super Saiyan, Vegeta destroys Android 19 and insists he can face the Androids alone. 138 140 Android 18 defeats him, forcing him to acknowledge that Super Saiyan alone is not enough. 141 147

Vegeta trains with Goku in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber and achieves the Muscle Form. 149 150 He then becomes Super Vegeta and overwhelms Cell’s evolved form, only for Cell’s true Perfect Form to crush him and break his fighting spirit. 155 156 157

Pursuit of Super Saiyan 2

Vegeta cannot initially replicate Goku’s Super Saiyan 2 breakthrough because he lacks the extreme rage needed to trigger it. 160 165 His peaceful life with Anya and Trunks fails to provide the emotional catalyst he seeks. 165

When Broly forces Sun Mo to fight at his limits and Vegeta can only watch helplessly, his frustration finally triggers Super Saiyan 2. 176

Paragus and Broly Incident

Paragus offers Vegeta the prospect of restoring Saiyan civilization, exploiting his heritage and frustration at living in Sun Mo and Goku’s shadow. 166 167 On Planet Vampa, Vegeta discovers that the promised Saiyan survivors do not exist and that Paragus has lured him into a revenge trap. 170

Vegeta transforms into a Super Saiyan but cannot hurt Broly, whom he identifies as the Legendary Super Saiyan. Sun Mo and Goku arrive in time to save him. 170 171

Majin Buu Crisis

Vegeta accompanies Sun Mo and Goku to the Supreme Kai Realm to face Majin Buu. He initially challenges Buu himself, but the group ultimately uses rock-paper-scissors to choose the first combatant, with Goku taking the first turn in Super Saiyan 3. 196

When Vegeta attempts to help Goku hold Buu back, Buu’s strength and speed overwhelm him almost immediately; Vegeta later admits that he could not last even ten seconds. 196

Godly Ki and Frieza’s Return

After more than a decade of training, Vegeta refuses to rely on the Super Saiyan God ritual used by Sun Mo and Goku. Instead, he independently awakens Super Saiyan God through self-cultivation. 204 207

Vegeta confronts the revived Frieza during his invasion of Earth and transforms into Super Saiyan God. Although his controlled Prince Tactics barrage devastates the battlefield, Golden Frieza remains unharmed and brutally defeats him. 209 211 Vegeta responds by resolving to attain and surpass Super Saiyan Blue, using the modified Hyperbolic Time Chamber for further training. 215

Universe 6 Tournament

Vegeta joins Goku, Sun Mo, Piccolo, and Android 18 as Universe 7’s representatives in the tournament against Universe 6. Before departing, he arranges additional Hyperbolic Time Chamber training with Goku and Piccolo so that he will not lose to Universe 6’s warriors. 238

At the tournament, Vegeta meets Cabba and learns that Universe 6 Saiyans are a large, technologically advanced race of righteous guardians rather than planetary conquerors. The revelation renews his pride in Saiyan potential. 239
