Background / History

Tsunade was one of Konoha’s foremost shinobi during the Second Shinobi World War, fighting alongside Jiraiya and Orochimaru. Their combined battle against Hanzō of the Salamander ended with Hanzō’s retreat, establishing the three as the Konoha Sannin 11.

She accepted Beichen Haotian as her sworn younger brother and agreed to teach him Medical Ninjutsu and the Monster Strength Fist. She provided him with scrolls containing the principles of both disciplines and her own training insights 8 15 16.

During Konoha’s conflict with Sunagakure, Tsunade countered Chiyo’s poisons, suppressed her puppet techniques, and sustained Konoha’s forces through her medical treatment and Katsuyu summons 18. Her inability to save Dan Katō from fatal injuries devastated her; soon afterward, Senju Nawaki was killed in a Sand ambush 23 24.

After the war, Tsunade withdrew from ninja conflicts and traveled the Ninja World with Shizune. Her grief over Dan and Nawaki left her reluctant to return to Konoha, and she often drank and gambled while traveling 24 26 33 34.

Tsunade later returned to Konoha, assumed the title of Fifth Hokage, and reunited with Haotian’s household 125. As the Fourth Great Ninja War approached, she stepped down so that Danzō could oversee the harsher aspects of Haotian’s unification campaign; she remained on the Hokage Advisory Council 158 159.

Following the Ninja World’s unification, Haotian asked to dissolve their sworn-sibling bond and pursue her romantically. Tsunade agreed, requesting Nawaki’s resurrection in return 172.
