Background / History

Kushina is an Uzumaki Clan survivor brought to Konoha because the clan’s sealing ability is uniquely suited to suppressing the Nine-Tails. She lives at the Senju Clan Compound with Uzumaki Mito and Tsunade, and is expected to become Konoha’s next Nine-Tails Jinchūriki. The destruction of her clan leaves her especially protective of family and friends. 3 42 55

She becomes close friends with Uchiha Mikoto and meets Qingshui through Mikoto. She had known Qingshui for several years by the time he becomes a medical ninja, and she unsuccessfully asks Tsunade to guide his training before his talent becomes apparent. 2 3

During the Joint Chūnin Exam, Kushina reunites with Yumiko, another Uzumaki survivor rescued from Kusagakure. Outraged by the bite marks left by Yumiko’s treatment as a “blood pack,” Kushina immediately accepts her as clan and vows vengeance against the Grass ninja responsible. 58 64

A year after Mito’s death, Kushina becomes the second Nine-Tails Jinchūriki. Her inability to fully control the beast restricts her movement and leaves her isolated at the Senju Clan Compound. 96 124

Kumogakure Kidnapping

Kumogakure targets Kushina during the chaos caused by Wu’s attack on Konoha. Toroi, Killer B, and their allies capture her and attempt to escape, but Qingshui pursues them and pulls Kushina to safety with Universal Pull. 71 72

After her rescue, Kushina refuses to remain protected and fights Killer B’s team herself with Shadow Clones and Rasengan while Qingshui confronts the enemy leaders. 74

Nine-Tails Rampage and Confinement

Restricted by Konoha due to the danger of her unstable seal, Kushina attempts to claim the Nine-Tails’ chakra for freedom. The beast overwhelms her will, causing a destructive Four-Tails rampage in the Senju Clan Compound. 124 125
