Background / History
Fischer is a former Red Robe Mage Association spellcaster who survived the faction's treachery and escaped its influence. Although less capable than Igg at arcane research, he earned Li Wei's trust through his Evocation Magic, political instincts, and ability to read his employer's intentions. Li Wei appointed him head of Hogg Mining Security Department's War Magic System while forming the department itself. 40 112
He initially served as both a combat mage and an information gatherer. After proposing that Zelandia acquire interplanar coordinates, Fischer used his former Red Robe connections to collect them; he ultimately delivered coordinates to seven planes, including elemental and outer planes. 49 55
Following his return to the Weave, Fischer became the operational core of Zelandia's Battle Mage Corps. His command was especially important because only thirty-two members of the nominal hundred-man corps could independently cast both [Calm and Composed] and [Great Fireball]. 55 73
Appearance
Fischer is a bald, broad-built mage whose physique is notably more muscular than most spellcasters'. He typically wears red mage robes and carries himself with the confidence of an artillery mage. 73 396
- A smooth, gleaming bald head marked with faint silver Magic Inscriptions when channeling the Weave. 73
- A muscular frame that makes his occupation less obvious when he suppresses his magic power. 396
- Usually armed with a staff and a chainsword in combat. 215 377
Personality
Fischer is socially shrewd, opportunistic, and highly skilled at flattering superiors. He accurately reads Li Wei's needs, balancing displays of loyalty with practical choices that protect Hogg Mining's resources and image. His survival in the Red Robe Mage Association reflects both his magical talent and instinct for navigating dangerous hierarchies. 112
He is also impulsive, indulgent, and easily tempted by wealth, status, and pleasure. Igg attributes much of Fischer's decline in discipline to his willingness to follow instinct, while Fischer himself recognizes that comfort has left him gluttonous, greedy, and neglectful of his health. 354 355
Despite his complaints and fear of death, Fischer repeatedly accepts responsibility for Zelandia. He leads from the front, defends allies under fire, enforces military discipline, and later accepts the burden of directing the Doomsday Ark even when its failure leaves people behind. 98 316 683
Abilities & Skills
Evocation Magic
Fischer is an artillery-focused mage specializing in destructive fire magic and large-scale battlefield bombardment.
- Led the Battle Mage Corps in creating a “little sun” and a wall of flame that cleared a major section of the Beast Tide. 96
- Can cast and precisely manipulate multiple fireballs simultaneously, including juggling five weightless elemental fireballs through pure magical control. 74
- Uses spells such as [Flame Burst] and [Sunburst] in direct combat. 99 379
- His spellcasting relies on the Weave and limited memorized spell slots; prolonged combat can exhaust his available magic. 73 369 379
Magic Inscriptions
Fischer bears the Red Robe Mage technique of Magic Inscription, magical pigment carved into his body.
- The inscriptions appear as silver markings across his bald head when he channels the Weave. 73
- They grant additional spell slots beyond his ordinary capacity. 73
- The practice is associated with Red Robe “mobile artillery” and mages obsessed with magical power. 73
Battle Mage Command
Fischer commands spellcasters as a unified military force rather than treating them solely as rear-line support.
- Directs the Battle Mage Corps to protect allies with concentrated destructive fire. 98
- Ordered his mages to enter melee with chainswords after their offensive spell slots were depleted. 215
- Enforces Zelandia's standards of discipline, collective responsibility, and teamwork among recruits and soldiers. 304 316
Mobile Spellblade Combat
Unlike a conventional back-line mage, Fischer combines flight, defensive magic, chainsword fighting, and close-range spellcasting.
- Uses [Air Dance] for aerial mobility. 377
- Charged into melee alongside other mages with layered defensive spells, including [Iron Body], [Stoneskin], [Giant Strength], and [Cat's Grace]. 215
- Pursued enemies underwater after casting [Underwater Breathing], fighting sharks with both chainsword strikes and internal fire-spell detonations. 377 379
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Chainsword — Fischer carries a roaring chainsword for close combat, particularly when spell slots are depleted. 215 377
- Mage staff — Used as a spellcasting focus, lightning rod, and close-combat weapon. 377 379
- Magic Inscriptions — Red Robe body inscriptions that expand his spell-slot capacity. 73
- Tablet of Fate — Entrusted with administrator privileges for the Doomsday Ark's activation sequence. 683
Relationships
- Li Wei / Hogg Tibilus — Employer, lord, and frequent target of Fischer's flattery. Li Wei trusts Fischer with military, political, and interplanar assignments, while also treating him as a useful pawn in Zelandia's diplomacy. 40 49 156
- Igg — Longtime colleague and fellow senior mage. Igg acts as a corrective influence on Fischer's excesses and later works with him on major magical research projects. 354 644
- Anna Jones — Fischer's apprentice and adoptive daughter. He accepted her after discovering her Intelligence score of 19, trained her physically as well as magically, and later watched her become the Goddess of Magic. 208 298 599
- Countess Angelica — Succubus countess and Fischer's wife. Their relationship began after Fischer was captured in Maladomini; she later became his chief secretary for the Special External Operations Team. 591 645
- Sophie — Angelica's daughter and Fischer's stepdaughter. She calls him “Dad” and was assigned as his intern assistant. 591 645
- Huozi — Fellow Zelandian veteran and battlefield ally. Fischer's firepower drove Marshal Kusi away after Huozi was severely wounded at Steepcliff Ridge. 448
Story Role / Major Arcs
Zelandia's Battle Mage Commander
Fischer helped establish Zelandia's armed spellcaster corps, researched chainsword designs with Igg, gathered planar coordinates, and became the commander responsible for the Battle Mage Corps' war magic. During the Gershon Beast Tide, he led devastating evocation barrages and personally protected allies from falling stone spikes. 39 40 55 96 98
Drow Infiltration
After Lord Hogg's reported death, Fischer became the Drow families' preferred route to influence Zelandia because of his control over the Battle Mage Corps. Li Wei deliberately positioned him as bait within Gershon's political struggle, forcing him into prolonged social and diplomatic contact with the Drow while Zelandia publicly feigned internal division. 155 156 174
Break with the Underdark
Frustrated by continued compromise with the Drow, Fischer openly challenged Igg's cautious policy and chose to return to the surface. He destroyed Zelandia's tunnel exit, opened a teleportation gate, and led roughly ten thousand emigrants—primarily surface peoples—out of the Underdark. 203 204
Mentor and Military Organizer
As head mage of the new city, Fischer conducted aptitude interviews for prospective mages. He personally took Anna as his apprentice, promoted physical development alongside magical study, and helped shape Zelandia's disciplined military culture by rejecting individualistic recruits who abandoned or attacked comrades. 207 208 298 316
Northlands and Maritime Campaigns
Fischer served as a high-profile Zelandian mage during naval operations, driving pirates away with fireballs, pursuing hostile spellcasters through storms and underwater, and later supporting the Northlands Allied Army at Steepcliff Ridge. His intervention with collapsing fireballs forced Marshal Kusi to retreat from Huozi. 369 377 379 448
Avernus and the Doomsday Ark
In Hell, Fischer became entangled with Countess Angelica before accepting her as his wife. He later worked as deputy director of research, received command of the Special External Operations Team, and led the construction of Noah's Ark—later called the Doomsday Ark. When the Ark's power furnace overloaded during an evacuation attempt, Fischer accepted responsibility for the refugees left behind and prepared to fight alongside his comrades. 591 644 645 683
