Whis is an exceptionally tall, blue-skinned Angel with no discernible aura, making his strength difficult to gauge at first encounter 58.

Personality

Whis is composed, courteous, and observant even when Beerus becomes destructive or impulsive. He habitually speaks with a faint smile, mediates confrontations, and reminds Beerus that Gods of Destruction cannot fight each other directly 58 83.

As Ji Yun's mentor, Whis is demanding but encouraging. He bluntly identifies Ji Yun's lack of combat technique, makes him train through exhaustion, and later entrusts him to deepen his Hakai understanding through independent practice 71 77 78. He is also protective of Ji Yun, refusing Vados's attempt to recruit him for Universe 6 94 95.

Despite his refined demeanor, Whis enjoys teasing others and can be unexpectedly childish, including fighting Beerus over cake and joining him in a food fight 117 118.

History

Arrival on Earth

While passing Earth with Beerus, Whis sensed the energy from Ji Yun and Goku's battle. Investigating further, he identified latent Hakai within Ji Yun and brought Beerus to Earth to meet him 58 59.

After Ji Yun deflected Beerus's Energy Ball, Whis explained that Hakai was a power ordinarily inherited only by Gods of Destruction. He concluded that Ji Yun was an exceptionally rare mortal capable of developing it naturally 59.

Recruiting and Training Ji Yun

Whis helped explain Beerus's demand that Ji Yun become an apprentice God of Destruction, presenting Frieza's death as a problem because Frieza had handled much of Beerus's planet-destruction workload 60. Once Ji Yun accepted to protect Earth, Whis facilitated Beerus's evaluation spar and observed Ji Yun's potential to eventually surpass both Beerus and himself 61 63.

Whis began Ji Yun's formal Hakai training by requiring him to destroy a planet using only destruction energy. Ji Yun instead erased multiple planets with ease, leaving Whis unable to offer meaningful criticism beyond telling him to comprehend deeper principles himself 70 71. When Ji Yun later erased every planet in the sky, Whis was shocked and warned him against arrogance 72.

Whis then focused on Ji Yun's combat fundamentals. He effortlessly evaded Ji Yun's full-force attacks and criticized his lack of technique, beginning a year of punishing instruction that refined Ji Yun's control and battle skill 77 78. At the end of this training, Whis declared that Ji Yun possessed roughly ninety percent of Beerus's strength and gave him a pouch of Senzu Beans 79.

Universe 6 Challenge

Whis revealed that Beerus had ordered Ji Yun's training partly so that he could challenge Champa, Beerus's twin brother and Universe 6's God of Destruction 79 80. He brought Ji Yun and Android 18 to Universe 6, introduced them to Vados, and maintained confidence in Ji Yun despite Vados's concern that the challenge could kill him 81 82.

During Ji Yun's battle with Champa, Whis remained calm while Vados feared for Ji Yun's life. After Champa's defeat, Whis criticized Ji Yun's performance while refusing Vados's interest in recruiting him 89 94. His protectiveness toward Ji Yun escalated into an argument with Vados that was ended only by the Grand Minister's arrival 95 96.

Later Events

Whis returned to Earth with Ji Yun when Majin Buu devastated the planet, waiting patiently while Ji Yun reunited with Goku before confronting the crisis 101 102. He later disclosed Ji Yun's apprentice status to Goku and Vegeta, though he initially refused to train them because they were not apprentice Gods of Destruction 119. After being tempted by Earth's food, Whis eventually left Earth with Goku and Vegeta to train them 124 125.

After Ji Yun's later battle with Champa, Whis determined that Ji Yun had made Ultra Instinct, Super Saiyan, and Kaio-ken into permanent states. He concluded that Ji Yun had likely surpassed him 168.

When Ji Yun's challenge drew Gods of Destruction and Angels to Universe 7, Whis attempted to prevent unnecessary conflict and later mediated when the Angels pleaded with him to stop Ji Yun's continued challenges 180 199. Afterward, he created a map of the other Gods of Destruction's realms to support Ji Yun's journey to grow stronger 203.
