Background

Goku is present during Raditz's arrival on Earth, fighting alongside Piccolo to save Gohan. He exploits Raditz's tail weakness, but his trusting nature lets Raditz deceive him into releasing it, leaving Goku vulnerable to attack. Ji Yun intervenes, kills Raditz, and becomes Goku's immediate new goal for training and sparring 2 3.

Ji Yun reveals that Goku is a Saiyan named Kakarot and warns him that Vegeta and Nappa will reach Earth within a year. While the others fear the coming invasion, Goku is excited by the prospect of stronger opponents. He trains with North Kai during the year but returns only after Ji Yun has defeated and driven away the invading Saiyans 5 6 7 13.

Unable to accept missing the battle, Goku challenges Ji Yun. He uses Kaio-ken ×2 and ×3, yet Ji Yun defeats him with a single heavy strike. Goku accepts the loss without resentment and promises to train until they can fight again 14 15.

He accompanies Ji Yun and Piccolo to Namek, where the Great Elder unlocks his potential. Eager to test his new power, he teams up with Piccolo to kill Zarbon with a combined attack and later joins the confrontation with Frieza's forces 19 20.

Goku challenges Beerus repeatedly despite the immense disparity between them. He advances through Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, and Super Saiyan 3, but Beerus defeats him with a single finger strike. During Majin Buu's attack on Earth, Goku is driven to consider fusing with Mr. Satan as a last resort. Ji Yun's arrival changes the battle's course, and Goku later fuses with Buu to secure Buu's defeat 101 109.

Even after clear defeats, he treats stronger opponents as motivation rather than humiliation 6 13 14.

His enthusiasm is tempered by compassion. He offers help to Androids 16 and 18 despite their stated mission to kill him, intervenes to protect Android 18 from Cell, and saves Vegeta with a Senzu Bean despite their rivalry 47 49 55. He also cares strongly about Ji Yun, worrying for him after Beerus takes Ji Yun away 68.
