Background / History

Under Shimura Danzō, Root functioned as a secretive arm of Konohagakure. Many of its older members were orphans raised from childhood, stripped of personal identities and trained to act as obedient weapons. Danzō regarded complete obedience—not companionship or individual will—as the only acceptable future for the organization. 55 262

Root answered directly to Danzō's will and frequently acted beyond ordinary authority. It captured Uchiha Rekka after he refused recruitment, attempted to seize Uchiha Sasuke on Danzō's orders, and repeatedly sought to recruit Uchiha Rei through coercion, resources, and promises of influence. 10 24 55 65

During the Uchiha Clan crisis, Root moved against Uchiha Obito after intelligence linked the masked man to Akatsuki. It tracked him through a concealed scent mark and sensory teams, but Obito broke the pursuit by eliminating Root's ninja hounds and sensory personnel before crushing the attacking squad. The defeat inflicted severe casualties and left Root short of elite, sensory, and medical ninja. 44 55

After Root's secret vault was emptied, Danzō imposed a compulsory “quota claim” system: members had to pay money to prove their loyalty and retain training and mission opportunities. The policy deepened the divide between surviving old members and newly recruited ninja, many of whom had received no pay and could barely cover food or medical costs. 94 104 204

Danzō attempted to restore discipline through ideological re-education, treating the organization’s members as tools. Instead, resentment culminated in the Rootless Plan, a rebellion whose stated goal was to oppose Danzō rather than Konohagakure itself. 262 268

The rebellion, aided by Orochimaru and Sasori, ended with Danzō's apparent death. The Hokage classified the event as an internal Root conflict and initially imprisoned Root personnel connected to it. After Danzō's crimes were exposed, members were released and newer recruits were permitted to leave or rejoin. 265 268 274 280

Aburame Ryoma assumed leadership. Under him, Root remained financially viable despite its fees and began operating with a surplus—contrasting sharply with the hunger and financial exploitation experienced under Danzō. 281 282

Membership and control

• Older members were commonly raised within Root from childhood, with their names, emotions, and self-awareness suppressed to create obedient operatives. 55

Conflict with the Uchiha

Root attempted to absorb or control prominent Uchiha ninja, including Rekka, Rei, and Sasuke. Its squads were defeated by Uchiha Rei while trying to take Sasuke, and its clash with Obito during the Uchiha operation left Root badly depleted. 24 25 44

Financial crisis

The theft of Root's vault crippled Danzō's funding. He responded by forcing members to contribute money and compete for low-rank missions, leaving many hungry, injured, and disillusioned. 94 104 204

Rootless Plan and Danzō's fall

Root members exploited Danzō's proposed cliffside meeting to rebel. Danzō survived the initial ambush through Izanagi, but Orochimaru, Sasori, and the rebelling Root ninja ultimately overwhelmed and killed him. 262 264 265

Ryoma's reorganization

After Danzō's apparent death, Ryoma took command. Root's newer members were allowed to leave, while those remaining operated under a more profitable administration. 280 281 282
