Background / History

Konoha Career and Defection

Orochimaru was Hiruzen Sarutobi’s disciple and was groomed as a potential Hokage successor. Before leaving Konoha, he completed more than 1,500 missions, including three times as many S-rank missions as the Fourth Hokage. His record is described as one mission every week from academy graduation until his departure 64 245.

Through Root, he obtained resources and dozens of Genin and Chunin for large-scale Senju Cell experiments. Nearly all of this research failed; Tenzo was the sole exception before Orochimaru achieved a successful, though unstable, transplantation into Danzō 57 91.

After Tsunade declined to train Uchiha Rei, Rei approached Orochimaru through Asuma. Orochimaru’s painful genetic-modification operation awakened only one of Rei’s Sharingan eyes, leaving Rei to regard the procedure as medical malpractice. Orochimaru also attempted to recruit him twice, but Rei refused to leave Konoha with him 68 237.

Following his defection, Orochimaru joined Akatsuki to gather intelligence and experimental materials for his pursuit of immortality. He continued secretly exchanging research, subjects, intelligence, and funding with Danzō and Root 198 241.

Danzō’s Treatment and Uchiha One

When Danzō’s transplanted Senju Cells became uncontrollable, Orochimaru demanded Uchiha Rei as a test subject in exchange for treatment. Danzō initially refused and offered ten other living Uchiha instead, but ultimately agreed to surrender Rei and increase Orochimaru’s funding 91 92.

Orochimaru suppressed the cells but warned that Danzō’s body was dying from an imbalance between the Sharingan’s spiritual power and his physical energy. He proposed an improved reincarnation technique that would prepare another body to receive Danzō’s consciousness upon death. Danzō subsequently failed to pay the surgical fee or promised research funding 93 94 198.

Using Rei’s cells, Orochimaru cultivated Experiment Subject No. 1, also called Uchiha One, as a prospective reincarnation vessel. He believed that being the first person she saw after awakening would secure her dependence and obedience. She escaped twice, and he suspected Root’s involvement in her second disappearance 175.

Return to Konoha

Orochimaru returned to Konoha and sought Danzō’s assistance in locating a missing woman. During their meeting, he also asked for Rei’s corpse after hearing that Rei had supposedly died, treating it as valuable experimental material. Danzō agreed to investigate but secretly notified Jiraiya of Orochimaru’s return 198.

His attempt to recover Uchiha One escalated into a tavern battle involving Kimimaro, hungry Root ninja, Jiraiya, and Tsunade. Orochimaru interpreted the Root ninja’s sudden arrival as an attack directed at him, although they had rushed inside for discounted food 211.

He later used Remnant’s position within Root to arrange Rei’s capture and recover both Uchiha One and a powerful Byakugan user. Meanwhile, Black Zetsu attacked his experimental base while investigating Obito’s disappearance, and Nagato redirected Akatsuki’s operations toward hunting Orochimaru 220 221.

Defeat by Rei and Itachi

While carrying Rei out of Konoha, Orochimaru revealed that Rei’s older brother, Uchiha Ten, had been a gifted ninja who died in war. He hinted that he possessed some of Ten’s remains and offered them as leverage for Rei’s cooperation. His immediate priorities were Uchiha One and the Byakugan user known as Hyuga Suzaku 241 242.

The Rei he carried was a genjutsu clone. Rei trapped him beneath a materialized chakra boulder, then attacked remotely with Amaterasu through the Telescopic Technique. Orochimaru escaped the boulder and shed a burned body, but was subsequently enclosed in a forest-wide flame prison 242 243.

After extinguishing the flames with Wind Release, Orochimaru confronted Uchiha Itachi, who was operating under the identity of Hyuga Suzaku. Itachi defeated his snake swarm with heartbeat-matched vibrations and slowed Orochimaru with a cooling field. A final Mountain-Shattering Strike broke Orochimaru’s arms and disrupted their chakra pathways 244 245 246 247.

Orochimaru escaped after biting Itachi and implanting a Heaven Cursed Seal. Drinking Itachi’s blood also exposed him to enhanced Salamander Poison, which continued destabilizing his chakra afterward 247 249 250.

New Akatsuki and Danzō’s Ambush

Unable to use ordinary hand seals and finding his teleportation machine broken, Orochimaru requested assistance from Akatsuki. Its members were interested in the 100 billion ryō bounty on him rather than his welfare. On returning to his base, he discovered its destruction and the capture of valuable subordinates, including Jugo 248 249.

Sasori subsequently recruited him into New Akatsuki. Its substantial joining bonus and research support gave Orochimaru a new source of funding after the loss of his laboratories and Danzō’s patronage 250 251 252.

Orochimaru and Sasori returned to Konoha to collect Danzō’s debt and obtain the Salamander Poison antidote stored in Root. With Remnant’s help, they planned a cliffside ambush called the Konoha Collapse Plan. Sasori also fitted Orochimaru’s damaged arms with exoskeletal devices, restoring—and accelerating—his ability to perform hand seals 255 256 257 265.

Their combined attack apparently killed Danzō, but Rei intervened before they could claim his corpse and ordered them to withdraw. Orochimaru later disclosed that he had disabled Danzō’s prepared reincarnation vessel three days before the ambush, intending unpaid surgical fees to have fatal consequences 265 266 267.

Recuperation and Further Research

New Akatsuki supplied Orochimaru with funds, technology, and time to recuperate. He worked on detoxifying himself and implanted both the Heaven and Earth Cursed Seals into a surviving boy, creating a new assistant. He also investigated the disappearance of the Land of Hot Water’s ninja village 331.

For the first time, Orochimaru regarded an organization as a home. Alongside immortality and mastery of every ninjutsu, he adopted a third ambition: destroying the original Akatsuki for using and betraying him 331.

Appearance

Orochimaru is a long-haired man with golden, vertically slit pupils and a distinctly serpentine manner 91 198.

  • Eyes: Cold, snake-like pupils repeatedly associated with danger and calculation 91 198.
  • Tongue: Frequently extends his tongue or licks his lips while speaking, threatening others, or examining blood 175 198 248.
  • Clothing: Appears in long robes and a black cloak; also wears a Root uniform and mask while infiltrating Konoha with Sasori 198 256 264.
  • Altered anatomy: Can stretch his neck, emerge from a giant snake, and shed a destroyed body 243 247 248.

Personality

Orochimaru’s pursuit of immortality is driven by his fear of death and memories of wartime corpses. He values exceptional talent, but considers genius meaningless if its bearer dies before accomplishing anything. For continued life, he is willing to betray Konoha, his teacher, and his former allies 241 245.

He treats people according to their usefulness. Uchiha One is a carefully cultivated vessel; Rei is coveted experimental material; and even the weak Remnant becomes valuable once he gains access to Root. Orochimaru uses promises of power, cursed seals, and information about family members to secure cooperation 175 221 241.

His confidence rests on extensive intelligence and technical knowledge, but it can become overconfidence. He assumes that he understands the limits of Amaterasu and Hyuga taijutsu, only to be surprised by Rei’s remote attacks and Itachi’s adaptations. Nevertheless, defeat prompts him to revise his research priorities, particularly his former dismissal of the Byakugan 243 245 247.

His attachment to New Akatsuki marks a change from his earlier instrumental relationships with organizations. Its support gives him a sense of belonging, while the original Akatsuki becomes a target of personal revenge 331.

Abilities & Skills

Living Corpse Reincarnation

Orochimaru’s forbidden technique transfers a person’s spirit into another body, offering theoretical immortality 92.

  • Cannot be performed again for three years after use 92.
  • Changing bodies weakens spiritual power to some extent 92.
  • Orochimaru is willing to inhabit a female body or manufacture a compatible vessel himself 93.
  • His improved version places part of a person’s consciousness into a chosen target beforehand and activates upon the original body’s death 93.
  • He retained control over Danzō’s prepared reincarnation arrangement and disabled the cursed seal placed on Ryoma before the ambush 267.

Human Modification and Medical Research

Orochimaru specializes in anatomy, genetic modification, transplantation, and creating experimental bodies 68 74 93 175.

  • Senju Cells: Transplants and suppresses their activity, but struggles with rejection and unstable results 91 93.
  • Dōjutsu research: Obtained numerous Sharingan through Danzō and repeatedly investigated the Uchiha’s supposed Three Sacred Treasures 243 249.
  • Cultivated subjects: Created Uchiha One from Rei’s cells 175.
  • Research revision: Shifted his focus toward the Byakugan after witnessing Itachi’s abilities under the Hyuga Suzaku identity 247.

Cursed Seals

Orochimaru traced Jugo’s power to Ryūchi Cave and identified the cursed seal’s underlying power as senjutsu. His cursed seals are described as an incomplete form of Sage Mode 71.

  • Early seal: Anko was the only child to survive its implantation. It had neither State 1 nor State 2, offered no combat enhancement, and restricted her development 71.
  • Heaven Cursed Seal: Implanted into Itachi through a bite after Orochimaru’s defeat 247.
  • Earth Cursed Seal: Granted to Kimimaro 331.
  • Dual implantation: Later placed both Heaven and Earth seals into a surviving boy; despite receiving both, the boy remained weaker than Kimimaro 331.
  • Recruitment incentive: Promised Remnant a cursed seal as a reward for drawing out Rei 221.

Serpent Techniques and Altered Physiology

Orochimaru uses snakes for escape, scouting, restraint, and overwhelming attacks 242 244 245.

  • Orochimaru-Style Substitution Technique: Sheds a burned body and emerges from its remains 243.
  • Myriad Serpent Net Formation: Creates a vast snake swarm to surround and exhaust an opponent 245.
  • Snake Gaze Binding Curse: Sends two white snakes to seize a target 244.
  • Snake Shadow Thousand Hands: Releases hundreds of venomous snakes from his hand 249.
  • Snake Jizo: Used against Jiraiya while Orochimaru’s actual target remained Uchiha One 211.
  • Scouting snakes: Search underground and through terrain for hidden enemies 244.
  • Heartbeat suppression: Stops his own heart while continuing to move through chakra control, countering Itachi’s heartbeat-based attack 246.

Elemental Ninjutsu

Orochimaru claims to know at least as many techniques as Kakashi despite possessing no bloodline limit 244 245.

  • Wind Release: Great Explosion: Removes oxygen from the battlefield to extinguish Rei’s flame prison 244.
  • Fire Style: Great Fireball Technique: Attacks a grove where his scouting snakes locate an opponent 244.
  • Earth Release: Earth Dragon Bullet: Fires mud bullets during the confrontation with Danzō, concealing the more dangerous puppet ambush 265.

Intelligence and Battlefield Analysis

His intelligence network is described as no less extensive than Jiraiya’s. He combines reconnaissance, prior information, and scientific reasoning to identify weaknesses 243.

  • Recognizes Amaterasu and initially escapes burning points by removing clothing and cutting his hair 243.
  • Uses Kimimaro’s reports to prepare a mass-snake attack against Hyuga Suzaku’s presumed single-target fighting style 245.
  • Coordinates infiltrators and partners, including Remnant within Root and Sasori during Danzō’s ambush 221 257 265.
  • His information can become a liability when opponents exceed the limits he expects 243 245 246.

Poison Resistance and Limitations

Ninety-nine percent of the Ninja World’s poisons are described as ineffective against Orochimaru, but enhanced Salamander Poison bypasses that resistance 250.

  • Contracts the poison after drinking Itachi’s blood 249.
  • Suffers unstable chakra, vomiting, and reduced combat strength while poisoned 249 265.
  • Seeks Root’s antidote both for treatment and to improve his experiments 255.
  • Resolves not to drink unfamiliar ninja’s blood again 250.

Equipment / Weapons / Facilities

  • Kusanagi Sword — Can be expelled from his mouth, wielded directly, launched at an opponent, or transformed into a black snake for a concealed attack 211 245 246.
  • Arm exoskeletons — Sasori’s treatment compensates for shattered chakra pathways, allowing Orochimaru to perform ninjutsu normally and form seals faster than before 265.
  • Teleportation machine — A device of his own construction linking a remote cave to his main base; found broken after his defeat 248.
  • Crystal coffin — Housed Experiment Subject No. 1 before her awakening 175.
  • Root uniforms and masks — Used by Orochimaru and Sasori to pose as Remnant’s subordinates 256.
