Background / History

Itachi was a celebrated Uchiha prodigy and Konohagakure’s youngest Anbu Squad Captain. He entered Anbu at eleven, survived the destruction of his entire squad during a mission to protect the Fire Daimyo, and later assassinated the Hyuga rogue ninja Hyuga Mugai alone. Within the Uchiha, he acted as the clan’s mole in Anbu and a double agent whose covert work had already stained his hands with clan blood. 2 61

His loyalties collapsed under Shimura Danzō’s ultimatum: personally crush the Uchiha’s ambitions or allow Root to do so, at the cost of Sasuke’s life. Itachi agreed to eliminate the clan in order to protect his younger brother and entrusted Danzō with a scroll containing his savings for Sasuke. 9

Before he could carry out that plan, Uchiha Rei’s genjutsu clone attacked Root while impersonating him. Konoha consequently declared Itachi an S-rank rogue ninja for crimes he had not committed. Confused by the premature warrant, Itachi evaded the Anbu with Sharingan genjutsu and crow substitution before fleeing the village. 12

Outside Konoha, Itachi fought Rei and discovered that Rei’s overall speed, chakra, taijutsu, and combat intuition surpassed his own. He escaped Rei’s Tsukuyomi-based mental assault only by drawing on the Yata Mirror and Totsuka Blade, but remained determined to control the Uchiha’s fate for Sasuke’s sake. 13 14

Itachi eventually chose to proceed with the Uchiha purge. He infiltrated the Police Force headquarters and killed Tekka, Yashiro, and Inabi, countering their combined Fire and Lightning Release with Amaterasu. Rei then trapped him in layered environmental genjutsu; after exhausting his Susanoo and Totsuka Blade against illusions, Itachi was sealed within the Totsuka Blade itself. 50 51 52

During his confinement, Rei’s counterpart carved countless Caged Bird Seals into Itachi over a claimed ten-year span, binding his body and soul. After being released, killed, and resurrected in Rei’s experiment, Itachi awakened with Byakugan rather than Mangekyo Sharingan and no memory of his former identity. Appearance

Following resurrection, Itachi appears healthier than before: his former sickly pallor, dark circles, and fine facial lines are gone, while his hair has grown longer. His transplanted Byakugan give him pale eyes, and Caged Bird Seal markings are visible on his forehead when activated. 195 199 307

Personality

Before his sealing, Itachi was exceptionally capable but profoundly conflicted. He viewed himself as trapped between Konoha, the Uchiha Clan, and his obligation to Sasuke. Though prepared to kill his own clan for what he believed would bring peace, he hesitated to oppose Danzō and Obito directly; Rei identifies Sasuke as the reason Itachi could not accept death. 9 12 14

After resurrection, his lost memories leave him wary, confused, and desperate to understand who he is. He judges himself harshly, repeatedly calls himself weak, and treats Rei and Toneri as overwhelming superiors. His devotion to Rei is genuine in conduct, but it exists alongside Rei’s extensive Caged Bird Seal control and manipulation. 196 199 205 307

Mangekyo Sharingan
