Background / History

Founding clan of Konoha

The Uchiha are described as direct descendants of the Sage of Six Paths and one of Konoha’s two founding clans. Although Uchiha Madara defected from the village, the clan did not follow him and continued to fight for Konoha. 22 25

During a previous conflict with Iwagakure, the clan reportedly held back an entire enemy village until Sarutobi Hiruzen’s reinforcements arrived, at the cost of roughly half of its Warring States-era foundation. Uchiha Homura later stated that the clan had declined from more than one thousand members at Konoha’s founding to 513 members. 27

Despite these contributions, the clan was largely excluded from Konoha’s core leadership. Its members were confined to the Police Force, while Kagami Uchiha—the only Uchiha to serve in the Hokage Guard—died on an undisclosed First Shinobi World War mission without the prestigious recognition the clan expected. 22 27

Uchiha Human Rights Report and the Hokage Rock crisis

Hozuki Shingetsu’s Uchiha Human Rights Report publicized and exaggerated the clan’s mistreatment, alleging that an Uchiha suffered discrimination every twenty-six minutes. The campaign transformed the clan’s private grievances into a shinobi-world controversy. 22 23

After villagers began treating Uchiha patrolmen with pity and discussing rumors about the clan’s dependence on deceased members’ Sharingan, anger spread through the Uchiha district. An Anbu messenger’s aggressive demand that the clan explain the rumors within three days pushed Homura to abandon restraint. 24

The clan marched on Hokage Rock after killing an infiltrator they believed to be Anbu; the supposed Anbu was actually a White Zetsu planted to provoke the confrontation. Homura publicly acknowledged that the rumors were “not entirely false,” recounted the clan’s sacrifices, and demanded political recognition. 25 27

Homura ultimately demanded that the next Hokage be an Uchiha and threatened to leave Konoha if refused. Uzumaki Mito brokered a compromise: Kagami’s name would be cleared, restrictions on the clan lifted, and Sarutobi Hiruzen would accept an Uchiha disciple. Hiruzen swore to these conditions on Hokage Rock. 28

Second Shinobi World War

During the Second Shinobi World War, Homura sent Sarutobi Hiruzen’s disciple, Uchiha Fugaku, to serve under Shimura Danzō on the Kumogakure front. The move forced Konoha’s leadership to protect Fugaku, who had become the clan’s principal bridge to the village. 106

The appearance of a Mangekyō Sharingan on the Land of Rain battlefield renewed Konoha’s suspicions of the Uchiha. Fugaku could not explain it: the clan’s preserved Mangekyō had reportedly been exhausted during the First Shinobi World War, and no new user had appeared for decades. 121

Fugaku later awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan himself, demonstrating Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi against Hozuki Shingetsu. Shingetsu survived Tsukuyomi, exploited Fugaku’s collapse from its strain, and seized one of Fugaku’s newly awakened eyes. 255 257

Suppression, independence, and relocation

After becoming Fourth Hokage, Danzō intensified pressure on the Uchiha, forcing their influence back into the Military Police Force. The clan’s relationship with Konoha deteriorated sharply, particularly because Hiruzen’s Hokage Rock Oath had not been fulfilled. 238

The four other great villages promoted an “Uchiha International Arbitration Case,” pressuring Konoha over its treatment of the clan. Hiruzen apologized to Homura, offered Fugaku the position of Hokage Advisor, and proposed returning the Mangekyō Sharingan; Danzō refused to return the eye or accept Fugaku’s appointment. 240 241

Following Fugaku’s death alongside Hiruzen during the war, the clan suspected that Danzō had targeted him for his Mangekyō. When Konoha surrendered, Hozuki Shingetsu included Uchiha independence among the conditions; Tsunade accepted. 269

The clan re-established itself in its old Warring States-era territory as the Uchiha Ninja Village. Its Sharingan made it a target for surrounding villages, however, and repeated incursions convinced the clan that a single clan could no longer survive independently in the modern shinobi world. 273

Uchiha Mikoto approached Kirigakure as an envoy seeking an alliance. The clan subsequently relocated to Kirigakure, where Hozuki Shingetsu accepted Uchiha Itachi as his disciple to reassure the Uchiha and publicly demonstrate Kirigakure’s acceptance of them. 273 274

Personality

The clan is intensely proud of its bloodline, military history, and status as a founding clan. Its members view contempt or pity from ordinary villagers as an intolerable insult, and many responded to the Human Rights Report with anger rather than sympathy. 24

Uchiha political conduct is shaped by a refusal to retreat or accept humiliation. This determination made the clan willing to confront Konoha openly, but its members were also vulnerable to manipulation by outsiders exploiting their resentment toward the village. 25 26

The clan’s emotional intensity is closely tied to its ocular power. Uchiha Madara described the Uchiha as a clan of both deep love and deep evil, whose stronger emotions make higher Sharingan evolutions more likely. 249
