Background

Jo originated as the Butterfly Seed implanted within Shiraishi Yoshijo. He initially acted under Mei's authority, monitoring Yoshijo and relaying information to her remotely, while insisting that Mei considered all Ninja Butterflies her children rather than disposable tools 36.

Although Jo calls Yoshijo his “father,” he identifies their kind as a parasitic species that grows through human flesh and blood. He frames their arrangement as symbiosis, while Yoshijo objects that Jo could survive his death and therefore does not truly share equal risk 70.

Jo concealed several abilities from both Yoshijo and Mei. He explains that he seeks independence and growth beyond Mei, and that his secrecy reflects lessons learned from Yoshijo's own habit of hiding his abnormalities from others 84. After the two merge their consciousnesses, Yoshijo recognizes that Jo's survival and evolution are bound to his own access to life force, creating a relationship of mutual benefit rather than simple master and servant 85.
