Background / History

Yu Xiaogang is the son of Thunder Douluo Yu Yuanzhen. His martial soul failed to awaken into the powerful form expected of his lineage, instead becoming the degraded mutated Luo Sanpao; he was consequently regarded as a laughingstock. 22

Unable to advance beyond level 29 for a long period, he turned toward martial soul theory. He proposed the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul and the Soul Ring Absorption Limit Theory, seeking recognition as a master of martial soul theory. His work is repeatedly criticized as common knowledge, self-contradictory statements, or incomplete and dangerous data. 22 134

More than twenty years before the main events, Yu Xiaogang met Flender and Liu Erlong while traveling to prove himself. The three swore brotherhood. Yu Xiaogang and Liu Erlong later developed feelings for one another, but he withdrew after learning they were cousins within three generations; he avoided her for roughly twenty years. 85

At Nuoding Academy, Yu Xiaogang encountered Tang San, identified his unusual potential, and pressed to become his teacher. Tang San ultimately knelt and accepted him as master, giving Yu Xiaogang the gifted disciple he believed could validate his theories. 21 22 Yu Xiaogang later became deeply invested in Tang San's rise, both out of their master-disciple bond and because Tang San's success could establish his reputation. 21 56

He also attempted to recruit Tang Chuan at Nuoding Academy but was questioned about his personal accomplishments and refused. This rejection becomes a lasting source of resentment, particularly after Tang Chuan's exceptional growth. 29 99

The Comparison Sky Screen's revelation of Tang San's past initially troubles Yu Xiaogang, who worries that an immoral disciple could damage the reputation he hopes Tang San will establish for him. He ultimately chooses to overlook Tang San's history, partly because he feels guilty over his own past actions. 4

Appearance

Yu Xiaogang is a thin, middle-aged man with a rigid, melancholy bearing and an unkempt scholarly appearance. 20

  • Usually wears a black scholar's robe. 20 24
  • Has a short crew cut and a face covered in stubble. 20
  • Commonly stands with his hands behind his back. 20 68
  • His expression is frequently described as stiff or rigid. 20 21

Personality

Yu Xiaogang craves recognition as a legitimate master of martial soul theory. He sees training a future powerhouse—especially a future god—as the clearest way to prove his worth, and his desire for this validation strongly shapes his decisions. 21 56 99

He presents himself as composed, humble, and insightful, but privately displays pride, jealousy, resentment, and insecurity. He is especially envious of his Black World counterpart for successfully accepting Tang San, and of Tang Chuan for achieving greatness without accepting him as master. 21 23 40

Yu Xiaogang's pursuit of validation can outweigh his concern for caution or impartial instruction. He brings Tang San alone into the Soul Hunting Forest partly to ensure that no one challenges his Martial Soul Mimicry Theory or prevents Tang San from following the animal-type soul-ring path he selected. 25 26

Despite his self-interest, Yu Xiaogang shows concern for Tang San's welfare: he provides food and bedding, guides him through early soul-master knowledge, improves Shrek Academy's meals, and seeks information to protect Tang San from the risks associated with Twin Martial Souls. 24 25 67 136 Tang San's long-standing loyalty causes Yu Xiaogang to overlook the occasions when Tang San nearly attacked him. 21 22

He is highly sensitive to public scrutiny of his theories and accomplishments. When Tang Chuan's military strategies and broader abilities are proven superior to his own claims, Yu Xiaogang is left humiliated, unable to refute the evidence, and deeply despondent. 390 402 403

Abilities & Skills

Martial Soul Theory

Yu Xiaogang is known for his martial soul theories, particularly the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul and the Soul Ring Absorption Limit Theory.

  • Uses theoretical knowledge to identify Tang San's Twin Martial Souls and Innate Full Soul Power. 21 22
  • Bases this deduction on his claimed study of 647 Blue Silver Grass martial-soul possessors and his first core competency regarding innate soul power and martial soul quality. 21
  • Advocates a Martial Soul Mimicry Theory and guided Tang San toward animal-type soul rings for Blue Silver Grass. 56 90
  • His theories are challenged for flawed premises, contradictions, and omissions, including his lack of knowledge about Soul Shock. 22 89 90
  • His stated absorption limits are contradicted when Tang San successfully absorbs a two-thousand-year third soul ring beyond the listed limit. 67
  • His initial assessment of Tang San's Blue Silver Grass is further challenged by the principle that Twin Martial Souls must be of similar quality, implying that Tang San's first martial soul could not have been ordinary Blue Silver Grass. 135
  • His Seven-in-One Fusion Skill is accused of being copied from Shi Nian's research, and later comparison footage reveals that he did not actually teach the skill to the Shrek team as claimed. 135 136 142 143

Luo Sanpao

Yu Xiaogang's martial soul is Luo Sanpao, a degraded mutated martial soul derived from the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon line. 25

  • Possesses a physical body and consumes food, including the white radishes Yu Xiaogang prepares for it. 25
  • Yu Xiaogang considers it the primary reason his cultivation stagnated below level 30. 25
  • Its Golden Sacred Dragon Martial Soul Origin is stripped by the Sky Screen as punishment for Yu Xiaogang's dishonest vote. 7
  • Following the punishment, Luo Sanpao's form degenerates into a pink Pig Beast martial soul. 7
  • The martial soul is later involved in the three-person Golden Sacred Dragon fusion skill in footage of the original future. 86 267

Golden Sacred Dragon

Yu Xiaogang can join Flender and Liu Erlong in a three-person Martial Soul Fusion Skill that transforms their martial souls into the Golden Sacred Dragon. 86

  • Requires the combined martial souls of Yu Xiaogang, Flender, and Liu Erlong. 86
  • The fusion produces a massive golden-scaled dragon with formidable destructive power. 86
  • After Yu Xiaogang reaches Soul Ancestor, its attack is substantially strengthened. 267
  • Its “Golden Great Fart” attack is powerful enough to inflict widespread damage during the assault on Shrek Academy. 267
  • The use of this attack enrages Di Tian, Zi Ji, and Scarlet King, who order that Yu Xiaogang be killed if he enters the Star Dou Great Forest. 267

Training and Team Instruction

Yu Xiaogang assumes responsibility for training the Shrek students and emphasizes physical conditioning, teamwork, sparring, and nutrition. 67 68

  • Replaces Shrek's poor meals with meat soup, steamed buns, and eggs to improve the students' nutrition. 67 68
  • Conducts baseline sparring assessments and critiques the students' weaknesses. 68
  • Uses weighted running to develop endurance and cooperation among the Shrek Seven Devils. 68
  • Develops a Seven-in-One Fusion Skill for the Shrek team, though it is accused of being copied from Shi Nian's research. 135 136 142
  • His recurring training methods are criticized as mediocre, inefficient, and inferior to more specialized approaches. 68 172
  • In the original future, he is tasked with training more than four thousand soul masters sent by the Heaven Dou Imperial Family and belatedly employs Zhao Wuji's gravity soul skill to assist the program. 172
  • When challenged to personally endure the gravity training, he appears prepared to participate but lets Tang San assume the burden in his place. 172

Relationships

  • Tang San — Disciple; Yu Xiaogang sees Tang San as both a cherished student and the means to prove his standing as a master of martial soul theory. Tang San remains loyal even as doubts emerge about Yu Xiaogang's knowledge. 21 22 56 90
  • Tang Chuan — Rejected Yu Xiaogang's offer of apprenticeship at Nuoding Academy. Yu Xiaogang resents him and later tries to use Ma Hongjun to prove Tang Chuan made a mistake. 29 99 100
  • Bibi Dong — Former close connection and admirer. Yu Xiaogang invokes their past friendship while persuading Tang Hao that she will not harm Tang San; Bibi Dong remains fiercely protective of him. 8 56 134 When he later seeks the secret to safely cultivating Twin Martial Souls, she refuses to provide it, and their reunion exposes the volatility of their unresolved feelings. 136 137
  • Liu Erlong — Former sworn sibling and lover. Their relationship is complicated by their close blood relation, leading Yu Xiaogang to separate from her for decades. 85
  • Flender — Sworn brother and longtime supporter. Flender believes in Yu Xiaogang and assists his work at Shrek Academy. 26 68
  • Ma Hongjun — Disciple in the White World's original future; Yu Xiaogang mentors him, strengthens his Evil Fire, and attempts to push him into challenging Tang Chuan. 99 101
  • Tang Hao — Yu Xiaogang persuades him to leave Tang San at Shrek Academy, arguing that changing Tang San's path could prevent his future godhood. 56
  • Yu Yuanzhen — Father and the Thunder Douluo of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Sect. Yu Xiaogang's degraded martial soul and low innate soul power made him a source of ridicule within his father's sect. 22

Story Role / Major Arcs

Sky Screen Punishment

After the Comparison Sky Screen exposes Tang San's former life, Yu Xiaogang is disturbed by the possible effect Tang San's conduct may have on his own reputation. He nevertheless decides to ignore the matter because of his own guilt and need to preserve their master-disciple relationship. 4

Yu Xiaogang is subsequently punished for voting against his conscience. Luo Sanpao's Golden Sacred Dragon Martial Soul Origin is extracted before his eyes, leaving the martial soul reduced to a Pig Beast form and causing Yu Xiaogang to collapse unconscious in agony. 7

Tang San's Recruitment at Nuoding Academy

Yu Xiaogang intervenes when Tang San threatens the Nuoding Academy gatekeeper and nearly targets Yu Xiaogang himself with a Sleeve Arrow. He inspects Tang San's martial soul certificate, recognizes his potential, and persuades him to enter a master-disciple relationship. 20 21 22

He accompanies Tang San to the Soul Hunting Forest for his first soul ring, teaching him about soul beasts and soul rings while using the trip to advance his theoretical approach. 24 25

Yu Xiaogang intentionally avoids bringing Nuoding Academy's dean, Fenos, on the hunt because outside opposition could interfere with his plan to have Tang San validate the Martial Soul Mimicry Theory by absorbing an animal-type soul ring. 25 26

Shrek Academy Instructor

At Shrek Academy, Yu Xiaogang takes responsibility for the students' instruction. He improves their meals, evaluates their combat ability, and imposes a weighted-running regimen intended to foster teamwork. 67 68

He later helps lead the students' soul-ring hunts, supports Tang San's increasingly risky choices, and trains the Shrek team in a Seven-in-One Fusion Skill. 89 135 136

His apparent contribution to the Seven-in-One Fusion Skill is heavily disputed after the research is linked to Shi Nian and later footage shows that he never actually teaches the technique to the Shrek team. Rather than explain himself, Yu Xiaogang insists that Tang San's future success will prove his worth. 134 143 157

Conflict with Tang Chuan

Yu Xiaogang's rejection by Tang Chuan remains unresolved. When Tang Chuan appears at Heaven Dou Royal Academy, Yu Xiaogang recognizes him and plots to have Ma Hongjun defeat him, hoping to vindicate his own earlier recruitment attempt. 99 100

The plan fails when Tang Chuan defeats Ma Hongjun in one move, further exposing Yu Xiaogang's resentment and overconfidence. 101

Visit to Martial Soul City

Before the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament, Yu Xiaogang travels to Martial Soul City to ask Bibi Dong for the method of preventing a Twin Martial Soul possessor from suffering a fatal backlash while attaching rings to the second martial soul. 136

Bibi Dong refuses to give him the secret, suspecting his intentions. When she reveals that she has targeted Tang San, Yu Xiaogang furiously threatens Martial Soul Hall and declares that Tang San is like a son to him. 136 137

Later Reputation and Military Role

Comparison footage shows Yu Xiaogang later becoming commander-in-chief of the Heaven Dou Empire's soul masters, excluding the Tang Family Army; he is also named the Blue Lightning King, Chief Imperial Soul Master, and commander of the Heaven Dou Soul Master Regiment. 380

He provides Tang San with information about Sea God Island and supports Tang San's later plans for further cultivation there. 269

His reputation is undermined by revelations concerning copied research, flawed training, and his inability to match Tang Chuan's military strategy. When Tang Chuan's campaigns are revealed as deliberate, low-casualty victories, Yu Xiaogang reacts with humiliation and despair. 380 401 402

During the final stages of the war at Jialing Pass, Bibi Dong asks to see Yu Xiaogang again and maintains that her destruction of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Sect was revenge for the way his family had ostracized and humiliated him. 460

Trivia

  • Yu Xiaogang initially describes himself to Tang San as a guest at Nuoding Academy who “sponged off the food and drink.” 21
  • He insists that “Grandmaster” and “teacher” are different forms of address, while strongly desiring Tang San to become his formal disciple. 21
  • The Sky Screen punishes him for voting against his conscience by stripping Luo Sanpao's Golden Sacred Dragon Martial Soul Origin; the pain causes him to lose consciousness. 7
  • His claim that there are “no useless martial souls, only useless soul masters” is repeatedly contrasted with his belief that Luo Sanpao ruined his own future. 25
  • Di Tian's faction issues a death order against him should he enter the Star Dou Great Forest, following the Golden Sacred Dragon's use of the “Golden Great Fart.” 267
  • Yu Xiaogang believes that Tang San's eventual godhood proves the correctness of his teachings, despite repeated evidence that Tang San's later achievements depend substantially on opportunities and guidance unrelated to Yu Xiaogang. 134 446
