Midnight Visit
"Should we have a welcome Ritual? I remember the team used to do that; it feels really good to eat and drink with the team's money."
Old Neil asked excitedly.
Leonard was laughing heartily beside him.
"Don't even mention it. Dunn's broke right now. They bought a house and can't afford to treat us to a meal. And the team is practically broke; we don't even have a finance department!"
Old Neil felt like he had lost a hundred pounds; he felt like his life had lost its meaning.
"Don't think like that. Although there's no banquet Ritual, there is a mission Ritual. Let's go! I happen to need people for my mission!"
Leonard grabbed Old Neil and went to apply for the Sealed Artifact.
He originally thought it would be a while before the official members arrived, but Old Neil sent people to his doorstep right away.
Old Neil was dragged away by him, tears welling up in his eyes, leaving Lynch and the others shaking their heads helplessly.
"Alright, we need to get going. Hopefully, we'll get an answer tonight."
Dunn glanced at the time and urged him on, but as he stood up, he seemed to suddenly remember something and said, "Bersha, you stay. You're on duty at Chanis Gate tonight. I forgot."
Bersha then remembered that this was something.
"Wait, Captain, wait a minute, I want to eat something. I thought I'd go home to eat after I finished the mission!"
Dunn nodded, feeling saddened that his team members were incompetent.
After Bersha finished eating, Lynch and Dunn hailed a carriage. During the journey, Lynch and Dunn exchanged opinions in hushed tones.
He suggested scaring the mother and child half to death in their dream before questioning them, but Dunn felt that this was not a good idea, as scaring them would cause problems and affect their subsequent interrogation.
"Alright! We can interrogate them first, then I'll transform into Mr. Dewitt and say they killed me, see if we can make them slip up. Of course, if they really get scared, you can still appease them. You forgot, you're Soul Assurer!"
Lynch reminded him.
Dunn suddenly realized.
He had completely forgotten about it.
"You're right, I can definitely try to comfort them. I used to think it was only for the deceased!"
Lynch thought Dunn was being overly superficial.
The name "Soul Assurer" implies calming souls; any living being with a soul can be soothed. He even thought Dunn could try calming stray animals to see if it would be effective.
But Dunn has only just grasped the basics, so there's no need for him to be so aggressive. The key to this kind of role-playing is finding the right method yourself; what others have summarized is just experience.
They discussed the itinerary for a while in the carriage, and about half an hour later, they arrived near the Dewitt ' house.
"I'll recite the poem first."
Lynch muttered.
He's already Nightmare, yet he's still reciting poetry here.
Back when Dunn was Nightmare, he was Poet, so reciting poems was one thing.
He's Nightmare now, Dunn is still making him recite poems.
"I have to admit, I'm a bit better than you at Nightmare."
Dunn said gently.
He stayed in the Nightmare for a long time and absorbed many of his teammates' Beyonder Characteristic. If he and Lynch were both Nightmare, he believed he was stronger than Lynch.
Or rather, Dunn is stronger than most Nightmare.
Lynch certainly believed this, but the problem was that he really didn't want to memorize poetry anymore.
I feel a little embarrassed every time I carry it.
However, since Dunn isn't carrying it, he's the only one who has to carry it.
"Alright, alright, I'll be able to bring my own Poet along on missions someday."
Lynch muttered something, and then, at Dunn's prompting, finally began the poetry recitation.
"Do not be afraid of the surging darkness; it is not Abyss, but the softest nest for wings."
Listen, I'm drawing the curtain of time for you, shutting out the noise to another dimension.
A tranquil atmosphere spread, and Lynch yawned. Taking advantage of this opportunity, Dunn pulled him and Dewitt and their son into a dream.
Mrs. Dewitt and her son were already fast asleep. Lynch politely knocked on their door and heard Mrs. Dewitt's bewildered voice ask, "Who is it?"
"I'm Lynch Trans, the inspector who came during the day. We've discovered that Mr. Dewitt's death is related to you, so we're here to question you."
Mrs. Dewitt stopped, then opened the door with feigned composure.
Do you have any evidence?
She asked.
The moonlight shone on her pale face, making her disguise immediately obvious.
Sure enough, most people are unguarded in their dreams, unlike him and Klein, who are both overpowered. Klein can even put on makeup in his dreams, which is truly astonishing.
Of course, this isn't about Klein; Lynch needs to deal with Mrs. Dewitt.
"Madam, someone witnessed some things about you, and we need to take you to the police station to confront them. The other party's evidence is very conclusive, which is why we've come to bother you so late at night. Please get into the carriage."
Lynch pointed to the carriage outside, which Dunn had put together; it looked just like the real thing, and Klein hadn't noticed anything wrong with it back then.
"I need to tell my son first. You know he's quite young and a bit slow-witted. If I leave without telling him, he'll definitely be scared tomorrow morning."
Mrs. Dewitt said calmly.
Lynch shook his head.
He pointed to Dunn standing to one side and said, "No need, my colleagues will look after your child here. You come with me first, and if you are innocent, we will bring you back by tomorrow morning."
If you are guilty, then tomorrow morning we will bring your son to see you too. See, we've successfully resolved your worries about your child. Are you happy?
Lynch asked enthusiastically.
Mrs. Dewitt's face Distortion with rage. How could he talk like that? This man was simply infuriating.
However, she didn't get angry. Instead, she thought for a moment and said, "Can you take my child with you? I know you're worried I'll say something to the child, so I'll bring him. You can wake him up, and you can keep an eye on us on the way."
Lynch thought about Mrs. Dewitt's suggestion and then agreed.
"Yes, madam, you are such a kind and understanding person. I did have this concern, and you have truly relieved my worries. You even allow my companion to come with us."
Lynch said happily.
Then he gave Dunn a wink, Dunn knocked on the door of Dewitt's son Bob's room.
"Who is it? Mom, wait, you're the police during the day!"
Bob immediately recognized Dunn. He glanced at Mrs. Dewitt standing next to Lynch, and his face turned pale. It wasn't until Mrs. Dewitt shook her head at him that he realized what was happening, and his expression turned sorrowful.
"Officers, do you know how my father died?"
