Background
Lynch's arrival began when the original Lynch Trans was shot while holding the Antigonus Notebook. The current Lynch awoke in that body, fled to Klein's home with the notebook, and discovered that the Stone of Myriad Phenomena was drawing energy and knowledge from it. 1
The original owner had left behind dangerous liabilities. When a man attempted to seize Lynch's belongings by claiming he was dead, Lynch searched his rented room and found a pledge stating that Lynch Trans had dedicated his life and possessions to the Big Meat Church. 16 Rather than expose his unusual survival to the police, he investigated the cult himself and leveraged his Seventh Action Group credentials to enlist Officer Beech Mountbatten's assistance. 17 19
Lynch reported his infiltration plan directly to Dunn Smith, positioning himself as an informant against the Big Meat Church. Dunn accepted the plan and promised him a chance to become a Beyonder if he earned merit in the case. 20 After the operation, his contributions earned him a Sleepless potion and eventual admission as an official Nighthawk. 36 38
Mr. Azik recognized Lynch as the descendant of Joshua Trance, whom Azik remembered from a past life. Azik came to regard Lynch as his only surviving descendant, offering him employment, lodging, tutoring, protection, and numerous Beyonder items. 41 42
Appearance
Lynch was initially described as a long-term laborer whose body was in poor condition and who was frighteningly thin. Better care and advancement later made him noticeably more handsome, with an unusual air of mystery. 5 158
- Initially wore worn, ill-fitting clothing and owned very little. 16
- Became more conscious of dress after buying a new suit with Old Neil's help. 50
- His appearance draws frequent attention from colleagues and acquaintances, including Ms. Daly's belief that the Evernight Goddess favors him for his face. 158
Personality
Lynch is intensely practical about money and comfort. He looks for free meals, avoids unnecessary carriage fares, and readily seeks reimbursement, yet he returned a wallet containing 300 pounds and received only the offered reward. 11 20 60 He is also notably food-motivated, once eating five steaks, three servings of diced-meat bread, two ice creams, and half a bottle of wine at a team dinner. 85
He is quick-thinking, shameless when necessary, and highly capable of deception. He manipulated Upton and Mountbatten to establish his cult infiltration, concealed his true motives from Klein, and regularly maintains cover identities around both allies and enemies. 19 33 His caution is rooted in survival: he hides the Stone's pathway-switching capabilities and keeps valuables in his spatial glove in case he must flee. 54 77
Despite his opportunism, Lynch repeatedly protects people he considers his own. He worries about Klein's safety, helps Old Neil avoid isolation and instability, supports Melissa and Benson financially, and seeks revenge against Ince Zangwill for a fallen friend. 58 79 128 139
Abilities & Skills
Stone of Myriad Phenomena
The Stone of Myriad Phenomena is Lynch's primary advantage. It absorbs energy from Beyonder items and can use that energy to generate abilities, formulas, or other effects. 1 33
- Generated a Sequence 9 formula that allows Lynch to mimic the abilities of any Sequence 9 Beyonder pathway. 33
- Can absorb energy from Beyonder items and potentially strip or redirect their ownership; Lynch believes sufficient energy could even interfere with Sefirah Castle. 21
- Can consume energy to record text, reducing his dependence on memory. 38
- Can alter his spiritual light to conceal abnormalities during Tarot Club gatherings. 89
- Requires energy to operate; Lynch deliberately restrains it in Sefirah Castle to avoid alerting Klein. 75
Mimicry and Pathway Switching
Lynch can access and remove multiple pathways through the Stone rather than remaining limited to his Nighthawk sequence.
- Obtained the Lawyer, Spectator, and Reader pathways; Reader substantially improves his study efficiency. 44
- Uses Seer abilities for divination and practical tracking, including locating a lost dog. 65
- Used the Warrior pathway for enhanced running speed, strength, and sensitivity to hostile attention. 62
- Removes pathways before returning to the Nighthawks to avoid exposing his secret. 54 69
- Passive imitation became a serious Sequence 7 risk: he unconsciously copied Dunn, Leonard, and especially Klein, prompting him to set a half-hourly watch alarm to reaffirm his identity. 60 143
Sleepless and Poet Abilities
As a Sleepless and later a Poet, Lynch has enhanced stamina, spirituality, and combat readiness.
- Can remain awake for extended periods to study, though this habit worries Old Neil and Klein. 51 69
- His physical training and marksmanship improved markedly after becoming a Sleepless, reaching the eighth or ninth ring at the Duel Club. 38
- Uses sleep-inducing incantations in combat, including against Anseline and the Divine Child. 133
Investigation and Marksmanship
Lynch is an effective field investigator despite his preference for shortcuts.
- Trains with firearms daily and collects Demon Hunting Bullets for Nighthawk work. 38
- Uses Spirit Vision to assess threats, correctly recognizing Madam Francis as at least Sequence 5 or a demigod-level danger. 84
- Notices behavioral inconsistencies during investigations, such as Bob and Mrs. Dewitt's implausible reactions to Mr. Dewitt's death. 152
- Combines observation, divination, and police contacts to solve civilian cases. 40 65
Equipment / Weapons / Items

Story Role / Major Arcs
Antigonus Notebook Incident
Lynch's transmigration, possession of the Stone of Myriad Phenomena, and arrival at Klein's home place him at the center of the Antigonus Notebook case. He joins the Nighthawks while concealing that the notebook's contents are visible to him. 1 28
Big Meat Church Infiltration
After learning of the original owner's pledge, Lynch turns the cult's attempts to recruit him into an undercover operation. He manipulates Upton, recruits Mountbatten as a police ally, reports to Dunn, and helps expose the organization while maintaining his cover. 16 19 20 36
Nighthawk Advancement
Lynch becomes a Sleepless, joins the Tingen Nighthawks officially, trains in shooting and mysticism, and uses his Stone-derived pathways to expand far beyond the abilities expected of an ordinary Nighthawk. 38 44 65
Tarot Club Membership
Klein pulls Lynch into Sefirah Castle and makes him join the Tarot Club under the name Strength. Lynch becomes an unusually valuable source of potion formulas and Beyonder knowledge, though he remains wary of the gathering's implications for a Nighthawk. 75 81 82
Ince Zangwill Pursuit and Backlund Transfer
Following the Tingen disaster, Lynch arranges protections for allies, seeks revenge against Ince Zangwill, and transfers with Dunn's team to Backlund. By then, he has reached Sequence 7 and must actively resist the Integrator potion's erosion of his identity. 127 138 142 143
