As a child, he befriends Liu Zhong at a banquet and quickly becomes inseparable from him. Liu Zhong teaches him to swim during a stay at the Liu family’s country estate, but Jia Hu’s formal education later limits their time together. 4 5
After Jia Hu falls into the water and becomes seriously ill, Liu Zhong secretly uses spiritual energy to help him recover. Jia Hu later seeks comfort at the Liu residence after accompanying his mother’s Zhang family relatives as they leave the capital. 5 6
Jia Hu and Liu Zhong travel together through the examination circuit. He earns the “Little Three Primaries” by passing the county, prefectural, and academy examinations at the top of the lists, then places first in the provincial examination as jieren. 9 13
His academic success and reputation attract widespread marriage proposals. The old Emperor ultimately arranges his marriage to the Fourth Prince’s legitimate daughter. Jia Hu subsequently takes first place in the metropolitan examination as huiyuan and receives the zhuangyuan title in the palace examination, completing six first-place examination victories. 14 19
After marriage, Jia Hu remains active in public affairs rather than being sidelined as a princess’s husband. He later serves in the Ministry of War, where he and Liu Zhong oversee army provisions and expose a military-rations conspiracy. 15 31
