Background / History
Song Qinghua is Song Yuanqiao’s younger son and Liu Zhong’s younger brother. Their mother suffered a difficult birth when Qinghua was born, never recovered sufficiently to have another child, and died when he was ten. His father responded to his grief with stern rebukes, while Liu Zhong comforted him and became Qinghua’s closest source of support. 36
Although polite toward Song Yuanqiao and the Wudang elders, Qinghua remains emotionally distant from them. Liu Zhong notices that Qinghua relies on him instead, repeatedly helping to conceal his brother’s estrangement from the sect. 36
Qinghua later makes an unexplained prophetic remark concerning Zhang Wuji, prompting Liu Zhong to suspect that he may carry memories or influence from a past life. By the time he returns to Wudang, Qinghua remembers that past life and credits Liu Zhong’s guidance for allowing him to find happiness in his current one. 37 48
Personality
Song Qinghua is devoted to Liu Zhong, whom he considers his most important family member. He follows his brother’s guidance even when it frustrates him, including delaying advanced training to strengthen his foundations and adopting a beggar’s disguise for safety. 36 37 40
He is compassionate toward people in distress. He gives his own silver to Zhou Zhiruo so that her mother can receive medical care, then follows the family home out of concern for the outcome. 40 41
Qinghua is also fastidious, easily excited by martial arts, and competitive with Zhang Wuji. He feels jealousy when Zhang Wuji becomes Ming Cult’s savior, but accepts Liu Zhong’s reassurance and restrains those feelings. His desire is primarily to surpass Zhang Wuji in martial arts rather than compete for political power. 40 44 45 47 48
