Background / History

Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan

Yu Xiaogang was a direct descendant of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan and the favored late-born son of its head, Thunder Douluo Yu Yuanzhen. Although his martial soul failed to inherit the clan’s renowned Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon and his innate soul power was only half a level, his father supplied him with exceptional resources and influence. Yu Xiaogang nevertheless grew resentful of his perceived inadequacy and left the clan to seek a solution through martial soul research. 29 48

At Martial Soul Hall, he studied its records but was restricted to ordinary texts. There he met the Saintess Bibi Dong; his knowledge of the outside world and cultivated bearing drew her to him, and the two became lovers. 29

Relationship with Bibi Dong

After their relationship was exposed, Bibi Dong lost her soul bones and protection from Martial Soul Hall. Yu Xiaogang traveled with her, but treated her injuries perfunctorily and continued prioritizing his research. Their party later expanded to include Liu Erlong and Flender, creating a fractured love quadrangle that isolated Bibi Dong. 8

Yu Xiaogang became cold toward Bibi Dong after seeing her monstrous Martial Soul Avatar. When Yu Yuanzhen moved to capture her, Yu Xiaogang hesitated rather than oppose his father; Liu Erlong and Flender ultimately rescued her through their Martial Soul Fusion Skill. 29 51

Nuoding Academy and Tang San

After a prolonged period of aimlessness, Yu Xiaogang settled at Nuoding Academy to resume his research and validate his theories. He held only a nominal guest-teacher position, had poor relations with the faculty, and sought gifted students whose progress could substantiate his work. 17 18

He recognized Tang San and Kai as children with Innate Full Soul Power and attempted to recruit both. Kai challenged whether Yu Xiaogang could provide resources, protection, or suitable Soul Rings, but Tang San—drawn to his theoretical knowledge—accepted him as his teacher. 10 11 12

Yu Xiaogang correctly identified Tang San’s Twin Martial Souls, though his deductions were based on incomplete assumptions. He instructed Tang San to conceal the Clear Sky Hammer, gave him a Soul Tool belt, and accompanied him into the Soul Beast Forest for his first Soul Ring. The expedition left Yu Xiaogang badly injured and dependent on Tang San’s care. 13 17 18

Tang Hao later threatened Yu Xiaogang for the cultivation method of Twin Martial Souls. Yu Xiaogang did not possess it, but concealed this fact and intended to obtain it from Bibi Dong rather than lose Tang San, whom he regarded as a rare subject capable of proving his theories. 17

Fall of His Support Network

After receiving a letter from Yu Yuanzhen, Yu Xiaogang took Tang San to Heaven Dou City under the pretext of accessing a Mimicry Cultivation Ground. His actual concern was his father’s secret operation and a possible Soul Power Breakthrough Pill. 30 31

Yu Yuanzhen subsequently disappeared. With his principal backer gone, Yu Xiaogang unsuccessfully appealed to Bibi Dong for a Soul Power Breakthrough Pill and assistance. Bibi Dong rejected him, confronting him over his abandonment of her during Yu Yuanzhen’s attack. 48 51

Shrek Academy and Death

Yu Xiaogang joined Shrek Academy after using Tang San’s rapid progress as evidence of his teaching ability. Flender allowed him to design the students’ training, and Yu Xiaogang took particular interest in Tang San’s External Soul Bone, cultivation schedule, nutrition, and bloodline abnormalities. 77 78 83

During his imprisonment with Zhao Wuji, Yu Xiaogang encountered Tang San in a neighboring cell and still treated him with concern. Tang San exploited that trust, drew Yu Xiaogang close, and killed him with the Eight Spider Lances, devouring his life force, Soul Power, Holy Light Dragon bloodline, and soul origin to complete the first Rakshasa God trial. 135 136

Yu Xiaogang’s soul was completely consumed; Tang San later falsely claimed he could revive him, but no soul origin remained to restore. 218

Appearance

Yu Xiaogang is a middle-aged man with an ordinary face, a cold expression, and a weary temperament. His usual frailty becomes especially pronounced after physically demanding travel or imprisonment. 18 43 135

Personality

Yu Xiaogang is defined by a contradiction between arrogance and inferiority. He considers his theories precious and seeks recognition as the continent’s foremost theoretical master, yet his half-level innate soul power, malformed martial soul, and stalled cultivation leave him acutely sensitive to contempt. 10 11 29

His need to prove himself frequently overrides his obligations to others. He pursued Bibi Dong again when he needed access to a breakthrough pill, withheld his lack of knowledge about Twin Martial Soul cultivation from Tang Hao, and sought to keep Tang San close as proof of his own theories. 17 31 51

Despite this self-interest, Yu Xiaogang developed genuine affection for Tang San’s respect and trust. He taught Tang San martial soul knowledge, supplied him with a Soul Tool, worried over his condition, and continued to care for him even in prison. 17 78 135
